Otsu is only a short train ride from Kyoto and located at the shore of famous Lake Biwa. There were no foreign tourist and I spend a peaceful few hours at the temple complex. A great place to visit if you want to escape bustling Kyoto and still see a fascinating temple with a rich history.

We took off the train at Hama-Otsu Station. Of course, Miidera Station is the nearest station to Mii-dera Temple, but we were going to have Japanese sweets near Hama-Otsu Station.
After the sweets shop, we walked past Miidera Station, and along the Lake Biwa Canal, which runs to Kyoto. At the dead-end, the canal flew into the tunnel under Mt. Hiei and the street wound up to Mii-Dear Temple. As the landform shows, Mii-dera Temple is at the foot of Mt. Hiei and Enryaku-ji Temple at the top of Mt. Hiei, both of which are at the gate of Kyoto from the Eastern Provinces. The two temple fought against each other physically about the supremacy over the distribution control, metaphysically about the faith. In the precincts, we found evidences how unjust and lawless Enryaku-ji Temple was. In Enryaku-ji Temple, vice versa, you can find evidences..... Everyone has their own claims to make.

Quite a nice walk walking around the temple. Must be really pretty during autumn. My favorite spot would be the top which you can see lake and mountain view.

This historically important temple has fallen on bad times. Their best National Treasures are inaccessible, unmarked on their poor map, and the other buildings are in terrible shape. The great Sutra Library seems to have been surrenderd to the mice. Information almost no-existent, nearly unreadable even for an educated Japanese. The place breathes the atmosphere of a secret sciety, andyou are not a member, in spite of paying a stiff entry fee.
Come to Otsu, but vsit Ishiyama-dera and Hiyoshi Taisha.

If you want a quick day trip out of Kyoto, then you should consider the city of Otsu and the Miidera temple complex. A thirty minute train ride from Kyoto will take you to Otsu, a lovely lakeside city. Then it's an easy fifteen minute walk along the attractive Biwa canal up to Miidera. Once there, you'll find the park like temple complex. It offers excellent vistas of Lake Biwa, the nearby mountains, and Otsu. The numerous temple buildings are architecturally interesting. There's a fine museum with great painted screens, sculptural icons, and mandalas. There's a pagoda, several bell towers, a koi and lotus pond, and more. My wife and I took our time and spent between two and three hours there, but the person selling tickets at the gate suggested forty minutes was adequate, if you are in a hurry. There's a lot to see in Otsu, including another large temple complex at Ishiyamadera.
We used a Koto Koto Otsu One Day pass sold by the Keihan Raiway. It costs 600¥ and allows you to move freely from site to site in the city by light rail. We found it very useful. We took a train from Kyoto, Sanjo Keihan station, to Hamaotsu station, transferred to a local train to Miidera, then walked to the temple. All very easy.
By the way, it's a short and easy walk from Hamaotsu to the lakeside, where we lunched at a lakeside cafe.

We visited this place at the sakura (cherry blossoms) season but it was not crowded with tourists as expected. Actually we could walk quite leisurely around and enjoy the beautiful view. There was a little bit uphill and downhill walking but it was not tiring at all.

Onjyoji, also called Miidera, is an old temple in Otsu. My wife and I went there to watch cherry blossoms in April. During the season of cherry blossoms, the temple was also open at night, and the ambiance was quite different between day and night. The pity was that the color of cherry blossoms was not clearly distinguishable due to illumination.

but I must say that Enryaku-ji was much more spectacular. The buildings themselves are not exceptional to my eyes, I found the temples in Kyoto or Enryaku-ji far more compelling.
