Don’t miss this

This was my favorite museum in Hakodate. Everything was in English as well as Japanese. Learned a lot about the native people and early settlers. Only 300 yen. One hour is probably enough time.

A Continuing Fascination with the Ainu and other Northern Peoples
maj 2019
This Museum is easy to find for a tourist using public transport once you work out the tram system, as the stops are close (you can see the tracks in the photo). I love the anime 'Mononoke Hime' or 'Princess Mononoke' and a central protagonist is the boy/village leader of a northern group who tries to resolve the pressures of industrialisation and people's independence and survival on the natural world and a spiritual life. As a result this trip we travelled to the northernmost point of Hokkaido (Cape Soya) and sought out this Museum. Fascinating displays on this restricted theme - honest and factual in the Japanese style. English handouts - so much stays with me - the salmon skin shoes, the embroidery, the weapons. I'll try to go again, as Hakodate is at the southern end of Hokkaido and easy to visit physically and culturally.

Not the most enormous collection.

What was on show was excellent with good interpretation. It appeared to be two combined collections of northern peoples artifacts. The textiles were the best with designs reminisent of the Inuit and North American indians. I guess they are all connected. A small but good quality collection of exibits.

A nice visit to learn about Japan's past
maj 2019 • Pary
Our Japan trip couldn't be all eating, shopping and sightseeing. We needed some culture and we found it at the Hakodate Museum of Northern Peoples. We took a taxi from our hotel and since there were four of us, the average cost per person wasn't too bad. The museum is self-guided, walking from exhibit to exhibit on two different floors. We learned a lot about the Ainu and saw many artifacts, clothes, etc. It was a nice time learning about Japan's past. When we were done, we walked back to the Red Brick Warehouse area as it wasn't too far away.

Worthwhile Indigenous Insights

Information on Hokkaido's indigenous people is spare throughout the region. This museum is a welcome source of information, albeit still limited in breadth.

I don't think there's anything else like it in Japan. Might close in 2020.

This museum is relatively small but is unique, as I don't think there is any other museum dedicated to the Ainu in Japan. The museum assistant told me that a much bigger museum is being constructed right now in a city closer to Sapporo to open in 2020 and I think it will replace this one. There are also some nice Ainu handicrafts you can purchase at the gift shop.

Very interesting museum that charts the history, culture and geography of the Japanese indigenous people the Ainu and their associated tribes in neighbouring Northern territories.
