Church of All Saints
lut 2020
The place where this church built has a long history. Originally it was a hermitage, but at the end of the 1800s it had developed into a small church with a nunnery that served the Catholic believers in its immediate surroundings. In 1924 it got its final name church of All Saints as it had been dedicated to many different saints in the past.

The small church is now a museum, perhaps a sign that deconfessionalization has also reached Cuenca.

Do not miss its rooftop with an amazing view. the church is not always open, so ask around when is the best time to go. On the patio next to it you can enjoy a nice coffee with a great view!

Surprisingly memorable

We don't really do churches and I don't know why we came in here. However, for $2 each we got a private tour in which we learnt more about the Ecuadorian social history than we did the rest of our three weeks. You do have to speak Spanish, I believe (my Italian got me most of it). Our guide was delightful and spoke very clearly (luckily for me).

However, the highlight is getting up to the bell tower: great views and quite a special place. If you want to avoid 45 minutes of Spanish, this bit costs just $1 per person 😊

The private tour makes it wonderful

We were the only visitors, strangely, and the lady at the desk took us through the church and bell tower explaining the history of the church and clausure nuns that lived there. Lovely visit.

Oldest Church - beautifully lit at night
sie 2018 • Pary
The oldest church in Cuenca on a bluff of the northern entrance to the historic city centre, overlooking the Tomebomba River. Carefully being restored the wooden church is still an active place of worship, with spectacular painted ceilings. A historic cross is outside, behind is a large terrace, Sister's convent and children's school. A $ 2 donation will get you a guided Spanish tour into the bell towers with a wealth of historic information. Beautifully lit at night it's silhouette is iconic in Cuenca.

The best church visit in Cuenca
mar 2018 • Pary
For $2.00 a person, you get a guide who tells you everything you wanted to know about this ancient site which is now a church converted into a museum. Yadira , who was working there on the afternoon of March 22nd was one of the most knowledgeable guide we’ve met up to now. If you’re a history buff, you’ll enjoy all she tells you while visiting there. After the history part, she came with my wife and I up the steeple where you get to see the best views of the city. We climbed to the top of the cathedral last month but this was far better. The tour of Todos Santos church was done in Spanish as the guide has very little knowledge of English.

Oldest church in Cuenca offers tours of building and gardens
lut 2015 • Znajomi
The Cañaris worshiped here hundreds of years ago, until the Incas replaced them. Finally the Christians came and built the first church in Cuenca on the site. Parts of the floor have been removed so you can see the original stones beneath.

The church now has mass only on Sundays but is open for tours, Tuesday through Saturday. Our guide was a capable young woman, studying to work in tourism and practicing her English.

In addition to a walk through the church, with its recently recovered murals, our guide took us through the pretty back garden, pointing out native plants.

The parish was known for its baking nuns. Bread is still baked in the clay oven and available for purchase but only 6 nuns remain and someone else does the baking. There is also a high end restaurant on sight, a coffee shop, and a souvenir store.

Admission is $2. $1.50 for seniors.
