Above and below ground
sty 2020
Above ground you have the presidential palace, an impressive building and surrounds. Includes regular changing of the guard activity if your timing right. At one end is a below ground cultural centre that is also worth visiting. A pleasant part of the city.

Cordoned off due to protests.
lut 2020
I really wish that we had been able to get closer, but due to the protests in Santiago, they had the whole complex cordoned off.

Never saw a museum that used only pictures as the main exhibits
lut 2020
Interesting place. Most exhibits are pictures describing the countries history. It would have been nice to have wifi and english translations on bar codes next to the spanish descriptions of what they represented.
I prefer to see actual objects and found them in the stores.

Plaza de la Ciudadanía is a public square located in the southern part of the Palacio de La Moneda (Chile's presidential palace) in Santiago. It is wonderful to walk around the square, see some interesting buildings and monuments around and learn historical facts with a local guide. Certainly would very highly recommend visiting this plaza to any tourist.

Underground cultural center, worth paying for special exhibitions
sty 2020
We had some trouble finding the entrance to this, can be a bit hidden depending where you approach it from. It is an underground center (3 floors of it) to one side of the presidential palace.
Tickets to the special exhibitions are only sold on one entrance. The rest of it is free, entrance was very cheap and the two that were on when we went (architecture and Bauhaus) were both interesting, well organized and well worth the money. The rest is mainly handicrafts and art, some for sale. There are also 2 cafes. Overall a very nice place to visit and, when we went, pretty quiet, indeed quite a haven in the busy city.

Lots of history
sty 2020
The original Presidential Palace was built in the 1700's but moved to where it is today in 1848. In 1973 President Salvador Allende Gossens committed suicide during a coup.
Because of the civil unrest in recent moths, there is a large fence surrounding the Palace so no one can look around. There were many armed police at strategic locations.

Interesting
sty 2020
Building has its story about the state leader who has died in defense of his ideas and principles of leadership, as well as of the people. It is history that makes this building special, not its architecture.

Interesting story and drive by with guide
gru 2019
We toured with Sean from Chile Dream Tours, which we highly recommend, and we drove by both sides of the palace and through this area while he gave us a history lesson about the palace and government and the current goings on...we really enjoyed our Santiago overview with Sean and would highly recommend it. Just walking around on foot not knowing wouldn't be a very good use of time in our opinion...but with a guide, even the mundane becomes interesting!

Disappointing tour along the main part of Alemeda
sty 2020
Watch out for pickpockets on Alemeda. We had been warned but thought "that'll never happen to us." Famous last words!! The cops have so many complaints that they just smile and give you paperwork to complete.

We only drove past this area, our tour guide was concerned about spending any time near La Moneda due to protestors.

Hola!

What is the exhibit at this time (May 2018) ?

According to Biobiochile, a Chilean news portal, the current exhibit is: Great Latin American Artists (until July 22nd, 2018). It covers 6 different topics: "Imagined, landscapes, Word and machine, The artist's image, America looks at the Other [note that "America" in Latin America means the totality of the double continent], The lived-in body ["The body we inhabit ?], and Humor and violence in Latin America. I haven't seen this exhibit, but given the excellence of the exhibit I visited in November 2017, this promises to be very stimulating and fascinating.
