A sanctuary of modern art and safe outing for the pandemic
mar 2021
Our latest visit to the Phillips Collection provided a much-needed -- and safe -- respite from our self-imposed isolation during the pandemic. The Phillips is celebrating its 100 anniversary with an exhibit aptly entitled "Seeing Differently," and yet again the curators put together new acquisitions, old familiar works, and borrowed items to provide a brilliant exposition of modern art. We left the gallery walking on air, rejuvenated, and inspired. As always, I marveled at the placement of familiar works in different spaces and alongside different works to create an entirely new context and experience. It's like discovering something you never knew about an old friend or relative.

The Phillips has taken great care to limit attendance with scheduled visit times, reasonable conditions (masks and social distancing) and a one way path to minimize risk of infection during your visit.

If you can, download the Bloomberg Connects app, which provides an excellent guide to the exhibit at the Phillips and two dozen other museums.

We gave ourselves two hours, and it was not enough. Luckily, the current exhibit will be in place until September, so we'll be back soon.

Wonderful, Often Missed, Collection
lip 2019
My wife grew up in the region and had often visited the Phillips Collection in a much smaller footprint, but they have expanded and my first visit amazed me as i did not have the Phillips on my 'hot list,' but it should have been. Don't miss this great collection tucked into a easily accessible neighborhood not far from DuPont Circle-you won't regret it.

Can't beat coming in here for free! Small, but some nice pieces. Tip: at the cafe, get the turkey/cranberry/brie sandwich. It was great, and made the whole visit worthwhile!

Terrific small museum
sty 2020
We didn’t want to leave DC without taking a quick look, about 1 hour, at this museum. Some great art in the collection! The house is also beautiful, especially the fireplaces in the upstairs rooms!

Beautiful exhibit of the The Nabis painters

This gallery provided a beautiful setting for the exhibit of "Les Nabis." It also has quite a nice gift shop with helpful staff.

Unique private collection in Dupont Circle
sty 2020
This 2 story private home expanded its space to add a larger 3 story exhibit area for its wonderful collection and visiting exhibitions some years ago. Is the tale apocryphal of a fellow from Germany bringing his girlfriend to DC to propose to her in front of Renoir's The Boating Party? It's believable, as the painting beguiles viewers. The current exhibition of Nabi artists: From Bonnard to Vuillard, will soon end, but there's always another worth seeing. I'm most intrigued by the Impressionist art, so well curated, but go to the website to see more of the permanent collection. If you can grab a ticket for a Sunday concert in the music room, by a wonderful traveling quartet, the acoustics in the main house are amazing. Just off Dupont Circle, this museum is special even in DC, where museums abound.

Wonderful collection away from the mall
gru 2019
On a recent trip we visited the Phillips Collection, down the street from our hotel in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. It features many nice works, including a Mark Rothko room. There's a variety of electic pieces, modern and traditional. The coffee shop and museum book store are also worth the visit. Its manageable and can be visited in half a day. A nice change from the crowds on the mall.

Worth more than one visit.

I forgot how wonderful the Phillips Collection is
gru 2019
Years ago, like 35, my wife and I lived in Washington, DC - Foggy Bottom specifically. I walked to work - GW Hospital and my wife rode the Metro to the Hyatt on Capitol Hill. And of course, we walked to most places. We found ourselves in the DuPont Circle neighborhood quite a bit for the restaurants, a great book store, and some good shopping. Fast forward. We stopped in DC on our way back to Vermont from Asheville and Atlanta where we spent the XMAS holidays to break up the trip and visited friends. Our hosts treated us to a visit on Sunday at the Phillips and my wife and I were immediately immersed in deja vu and what a wonderful feeling it was. We strolled around, viewed a wonderful exhibit, "BONNARD TO VUILLARD: The Intimate Poetry of Everyday Life" and of course sat in the Mark Rothko Room for 15 minutes. The art is amazing and we are grateful for Duncan Philips truly exceptional vision.

interesting collection for any art enthusiast
gru 2019
set in the original house of the phillips family is their donation to the art collections of the world. this is an eclectic mix of styles and media, including some very recognizable pieces and names. viewing the permanent collection is free of charge and would be worth seeing even if there was a fee. allow about 1-2 hours to enjoy a leisurely paced visit. there is a small cafe on site. the neighborhood near dupont circle is also a nice place for a stroll to see the mix of architecture in the area.

Wonderful collection
gru 2019
I visited the Phillips Collection again this week with visitors for Christmas. It never gets old, well maybe older but not tiresome. It is small enough to see in a day and it is designed to make that possible. The collection is fabulous without being overwhelming. There is now a special exhibit of drawings and lithos which I enjoyed. Of course the works from the permanent collection are also there. If you have not been, you should go and if you have been, it is worth going again. From the impressionists to Rothko, you should find a lot of things you like.
