Amazing visit 😍

I don’t usually post reviews but last summer I went to that Museum and how to say in one word that it was STUNNING, there’s no such word to express my feeling ! Exploring the African-American story was extraordinary. The kids fully understood it and enjoyed learning ( Wow 🤦🏽‍♀️). Many costums, animations, pictures that retrace the story of the United States. Anyways I totally recommend to visit this Museum ( that’s what I’ve been doing for months to my beloved one 😅)

A Worderful visit !

A few days ago, I visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and that was one of the best visit I have never done! With its magnificent modern design and pronounced architecture, you have to see this museum at least once in your life. Moreover, I have learnt many information and facts about the history of Black Americans and the Civil Rights Movement. Each element tells us a part of the fight of the black community, the consequences for their live conditions, the leaders of different movements... Also, the fact that each elder can talk and tell their stories is very lively! I recommend this place!

A very compelling experience.

Hi!. I was here sometime ago before corona. Just found my review. I am sure that aside from corona precautions, the museum is just the same as when I first visited it. Don't know how it is now but when I went there, there was no tips telling me how to do the museum. What I did was go up and work my way down. I agree with other posters that it is best to start from the bottom as it shows the black experience in America from the beginning. Nice to end at the reflecting pool to reflect on what you have just witnessed. Then go upstairs to see the current contribution they have given to our country. From sports- Michael Jordan- to Music- the Temptations- and everything in between. And don't forget the olympian who put Hitler's showcase olympics to shame. For those with a bent for history, a must go even once in your lifetime. However you must go with an open mind. It is very compelling. The exhibits are like in a maze. They could be better laid out. I spent the morning at the Holocaust Museum and the afternoon here and I could say you can actually see the difference in the layout. Holocaust was better. Timewise it depends on how long you would spend on the exhibits. I'd say I spent close to 3 hours there.

An amazing showcase - give it several hours

This museum remains so popular that in ordinary times you need to reserve admission several MONTHS in advance. Now you can reserve up to 30 days out and you need to go online and reserve admission in the morning 30 days out in order to be sure you can get in. It has an incredible collection of artifacts that bring you into the culture of accomplished African Americans and gives you remarkable insight into their lives outside of the activities that brought them fame.

Did not enjoy it

An important story to be told, but this museum did not make for an enjoyable experience. -1- They are taking coronavirus precautions to the extreme. In going through ultra-rigid, airport-style security, I was handed a tray that was so dripping wet with disinfectant, another employee commented about it. Additionally, the place has markings on the floor denoting six feet of separation that are often 10 feet apart. -2- Despite the precautions and the timed entry, and having to wait frequently in separate lines, the museum felt really crowded at certain points. I have trouble believing that they were only at 25% capacity and would hate to imagine what it’s like at 100%. I would strongly advise that if you are planning to go during the pandemic that you only go first thing in the morning. -3- Agreeing with another poster that the layout is really just not great. I had to ask an employee where the museum “begins” (lowest floor in basement), and the rooms from there, rather than being an easy-to-follow path and storyline, often turn into a meandering mess.

Start at the bottom level and work your way up

(Went in October of 2019) A must do for every American. I learned more in one day than what any history teacher ever taught me in a classroom. Bring Kleenex. It’s a difficult journey, but a necessary one to honor through education. If you’re a walk up, ask a staff member how to get a day of ticket.

Must See though Layout is Horrible.

Very disappointed with the lay out of the museum. I’m also very disappointed with some of the content that’s within. When you go to the Holocaust Museum, you step off the elevator and you’re blasted with this image of burning bodies. There’s a reason why this is an image you see when you first step into the museum. They want you to think about the time the place the people. The African American Museum is extremely politically correct. It’s very user-friendly. The museum lays out as if African-Americans willfully and joyfully came to America. However, that was not the case. That first floor should have shown boats that hundreds of slaves were packed like animals and suffering crowded together. It should have shown burning bodies hanging from trees while people smiled along with children laughing and playing as if this was an every day event which probably was. But no...they have Juke and jive stuff in the first floors. Of course they have sports they have music, hip-hop, dance, and shoes, etc. However, African-Americans are so much more than that. It could’ve shown more of the inventions that are used today that African-Americans have created. It could mentioned the HeLa cell that is the reason for all the vaccines available today and tomorrow. Even though the bottom floors do display some topics, I wonder why they’re on the bottom floors where some people may not even look to see what’s below. It’s almost like they’re hiding it. That for me is the reason why I give it as a one star. The building is beautiful but I didn’t come to look at a building, I’m looking for the contents within. Hiding the past, ignoring the past, justifying the past is what bought us today backwards and in chaos. My thought is to go and check it out because it’s free and you might learn something. I did enjoy it. I was just very disappointed with the whole layout of the museum as I said before and before.
