A typical local museum
mar 2019 • Pary
The Deri Museum is one of the traditional „left overs“. It’s made from locals and for locals (or at least Hungarians).

The main visitors are students or Hungarian travelgroups and this fact is visible.

Anyway, we like local museums so we liked this one as well.

Nice museum with a wide variety historic and artistic items
wrz 2019
The collections start with archeologic findings of ancient funerals customs during the previous 4000 years. The collections extend to ancient Egypt with two mummies. Also a collection of Samurai armours. Also a fairly large collection of oil paintings from Hungary.

The first part of the museum had good english language explanations of the displays but unfortunately the latter part was only in hungarian language. In spite of this I can warmly recommend visiting this museum.

Weird experience
wrz 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Almost no English labels, the layout is not easy to understand and the material provided at the ticket office has no map. There was an employee in every hall, which is fine, but one was shadowing me in a very unsubtle way. Every time I made a step, she made one in the same direction, keeping a "respectful" two meters away, looking at me trying to interpret the Hungarian labels. I completely understand the need to guarantee that visitors do not harm the displays, but she could have been a little bit more discreet about it. So rude. For some reason the Old Gallery was closed behind a pole rope, but when I asked an employee to see some painting, he just talked to the other employee guarding the pole rope and they let me pass, which brings the question why it was closed in the first place...
The Munkácsy Trilogy was really excellent though... Therefore 2 stars instead of 1.
In summary, it could be interesting but only if you have a plan and know what you want to see.

Important and nice local museum
lip 2017 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
It is in the city centre, near the Great Church. It's not very big, so visiting it doesn't take long time. If you have a little time you must visit the Munkácsy's Trilogy, the most famous paintings. If you have more time, you should see the permanent exhibitions (eg. the mummies from Egypt, etc.), but there are some periodic exhibitions, too. One of the most interesting programmes.every year is the night of the museums. (23.June 2018) You can visit all the museums of Debrecen during one day-night.

Don't wait for a rainy day. A gorgeous treasure trove deserving your attention.

From Samurai warriors to a couple of Mummies on a prolonged European vacation with glorious galleries filled with art, culture, history and the most handsome collections.

The Deri Museum is a glorious treat in any weather. The art galleries alone justify your visit. Some of the portraits are remarkable in their intensity. The "Big 3" Munkascy paintings equally deserve a visit on their own merits.

What I wasn't prepared for though, was the galleries filled with exquisite historical artefacts, from suits of armour, to swords, to the stunning Bronze of Hadjusamon.

Now, dear reader, I will share one observation with you that makes me smile when I think of the museum. The Museum staff are intensely proud of their facility and literally follow you through the galleries. They are very swift to protect the exhibits from any damage (if say you slip out your iphone in the art gallery and they think you might take a cheeky photo, for example). They also wont let you slide out of the museum until they are satisfied that you have visited all of the exhibits.

Such wonderful loyalty to their museum tells you everything you need to know. It is a house filled with truly unexpected treasures and is a treasure to the community.

Wonderful Museum with Great Range of Exhibits
mar 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Very close to the centre of Debrecen is the Deri Museum. A must visit if you are in the area.
Exhibits range from local prehistoric skeletons, egyptian mummies, gold and bronze treasures and much more. Some exhibits are local, and others are worldwide. Many, but not all, have descriptions in English.
I spent a couple of hours here, and found the museum so interesting.
Staff are helpful and direct you around the different rooms so that you miss nothing!

The main advantage of this museum is that is not too big, so you can see all of it in half a day and it is not tiring. you can see there some history of the city and the area.(Debrecen was once the capital of Hungary)

Nice Museum but not setup to cater for non-Hungarians
lut 2018
Is full of a private collection from the Deri family. Some of it is interesting like the history of people in the region and various European and Asian medieval weaponry. What was a shame is that none of the exhibitions had any descriptors in English which would limit it's value to foreign visitors.
