Delightful and challenging
maj 2021 • Znajomi
The QVMAG is really worth a visit (or in my case two) whilst in Launceston. The building is grand and the carefully curated collections do it justice. Thought provoking installations, classic portraiture, historically significant artefacts. And - importantly - a beautifully presented exhibition exploring First Nations people - history and culture.

Planetarium just kept getting cancelled
kwi 2021
Sorry very, very upset about the planetarium, when I found out there was a planetarium which I love, I couldn't wait to get there. The museum itself is quite interesting but not spectacular. You would love it if you love and are into especially things related to engineering and manufacturing in the old times. It's very clean and nice and the staff and very friendly. I ended up not going to the Planetarium because they just cancel sessions and the booking system with eventbrite I hate, so basicially I was left very disappointed about not going to the planetarium. Kids would like it as they have interactive stuff for the kids even though there were some that were broken.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear you missed out on seeing one of our great shows. Unfortunately, with upward of 40 screenings per month sometimes things go wrong. This particular show was cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. We hope you can visit again soon.

Very interesting

The info about the Tasmanian tiger was very interesting and an eye opener. The dinosaur sections were very good. A small museum but very well maintained. The planetarium section was closed as the astronomer had retired.

Our favourite part of the visit was gaining a greater appreciation for Launceston's place in the history of our nation. We allowed 45 min and stayed 2 hours and 20 minutes! We would love to return tomorrow for the Planetarium show.

Highlight the Chinese temple
lut 2021
The highlight of this museum was the colourful and fascinating Chinese temple - brought together by a Chinese Australian from various Tasmanian mining sites. The bird landscapes were also very good. This place is well worth a visit.

Chinese tin miners’ temple

Interesting temporary exhibits, worth a look.
关帝庙 (“guandi” temple) seemed to be a blend from various temples from late 1800s in NE Tasmania.

A Hidden Gem of an Art Gallery Poised to Being So Much More
lut 2021
Attended a great performance by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra at Queen Victoria's Art Gallery at Royal Park this afternoon. Absolutely loved that it'd played in the section of the gallery where historic artwork on Tasmania hangs - echoing Venice, Italy's tradition (kept very much alive today still) of playing great musical classics in locations that range "from the church of San Vidal to the upper room of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco" - imbuing these places with art "expressed in all its possible forms: music, painting, sculpture and architecture".... throughout the year.
It was so obvious all who'd attended had loved it as well that this too should become a very much more regular event at the Royal Park art gallery; with performances scheduled across all the seasons too!
It was also the first visit we'd paid the art gallery after it'd put in place its revamped art vision. Kudos for the better hang, for showcasing artworks by living Tasmanian artists alongside its colonial collection - absolutely adored its Garry Greenwood's "Skin" exhibition. Thank you for showing that western art today aren't all like those exhibited at MONA - that western art today hasn't lost its creative adeptness at using pleasing aesthetics to draw us into their provocative messages!
Am disappointed though that this Royal Park establishment has allocated a substantial portion of gallery space in not a very large building to Tasmanian history too. While these exhibits were highly interesting and perfectly displayed, surely there's a LOT LOT LOT more history in Tasmania that needs be told - in fact, so much more that the Queen Victoria team should look into identifying a vacant historic building within Launceston as its third site - for the sole purpose of telling the island state's history - in as attractive and as interactive as showcased in its science and natural museum at Inveresk!
And take a leaf from Design Tasmania's recent revamp in making its Royal Park Art Gallery the place for Tasmanian, Australian and international quality old, modern and contemporary art that haven't forgotten the aesthetics.... putting Launceston on the international tourist and educational maps for global standards in sublime art and design!
