Beautiful!

Beautiful leisurely walk at the gorge. Peaceful and close to nature! Loved the sounds of the river and the cool breeze! Impressive rock formations on both sides!

A day well spent
mar 2021
Had a good day. Wish the restaurant on the top of the cliff had more choices for vegetarians other than wedges at the cafe and barely anything in the restaurant.

A must visit if in Launceston
lut 2021 • Pary
This attraction is only a short drive or a 15 minute walk from the Launceston CBD and is in the must see category. The natural beauty of the gorge and cataracts on the South Esk River are a major attraction in their own right, but add to that the manicured lawns, swimming pool, boat ride, chairlift, restaurant and cafe etc and you have a real winner. For those who have trouble walking, there is an inclinator which obviates the problems posed by steps and steep paths.

From humble beginnings
lut 2021
What is a gorge? A gorge is a narrow valley with steep, rocky walls located between hills or mountains. The term comes from the French word gorge, which means throat or neck. A gorge is often smaller than a canyon, although both words are used to describe deep, narrow valleys with a stream or river running along their bottom. And that is exactly what you will find near the centre of Launceston... it's stunning. Clearly it's well used because I passed so many people here in the late afternoon. I thought it would be too late for activities but there were people scaling the rocks, rowing, jogging and walking... all ages, all fitnesses. The earliest known European visitor to the site was William Collins, who discovered its entrance in 1804. While it's known for its "natural" beauty — but what many don't realise is it took dynamite, the digging up of a swamp and planting of scores of trees over 100 years ago to make it the tourism drawcard it is today. Before the 1890s the gorge, which is in the heart of the city in northern Tasmania, was difficult for locals, let alone tourists, to access. It's incredibly beautiful and well worth going to visit... in fact I don't think you should visit Launceston without putting it on your list of things to do.

We went across on the chairlift, the staff were extremely nice and helpful. We had a lovely morning tea at the cafe and walked back down. Really enjoy the views and the wildlife.

Great walking trails
sty 2021
We took the flat walking trail to get there and took the zig zag trail back. The flat trail is much more scenic. There are peacocks and a cafe there.

Worth a visit when in Launceston
gru 2020
We drove to Kings Bridge and parked nearby. The walk up the gorge was very manageable and the views were great. Of course, we deserved the ice cream we had at the kiosk! Didn't have time for the chairlift, but admired the peacocks. Would definitely recommend visiting Cataract Gorge.

It’s a wonderfull place to visit
gru 2020
The gorge is stunning several walking tracks to choose from all very well maintained and well signed. Bridge is a great place for photo opportunity across the gorge, many lookout points for you to stop and enjoy scenery. Also has a nice restaurant went for breakfast food was first class. Many areas for kids to play and chill out so go for all ages, zig zag track is a little boring with almost no views so skip that if you are time poor. It’s certainly the number 1 thing to do in Launceston.

Tranquil nature

I caught the free Tiger bus from Princes Square to the gorge. A tranquil nature spot, lots of birdsong. I saw the peacocks and Bennett's wallabies. Took the chairlift both ways, very smooth ride. The lady at the ticket booth was very helpful with information about my walking route back to the CBD. The cataract walk is picturesque, lots of good photo spots. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful
mar 2020 • Pary
The gorge itself is beautiful, but the ‘hike’ was underwhelming. My wife and I took the zigzag trail. I guess we expected more, but it seemed like just a hard trail from one side to the other. There wasn’t any particular stunning viewpoints and before we knew it, it was over and it ended at a road. The walk back by the ‘easy’ trail was much more scenic and beautiful. Definitely something worth visiting, but if you want a proper hike, find someplace else.
