Not Much to See at First
wrz 2019
Having just visited Skye and seen Flora's memorial, we thought this would be of a similar stature. It is very close to the Kildonan museum but keep your eyes peeled for the small sign at the roadside.
We drove up the rough track in a 4x4 past the house and parked quite close. Initially we thought it quite poor but after studying the landscape, we could make out a lot of former blackhouses which would have made up the community.
If you are interested in Jacobite history then this should be on your bucket list.

Not overwhelming.

Stopped at what were the remains of Flora Mcdonald’s birthplace. Not exactly overwhelming but nice to see and we also had a McDonald in our company, which was nice.

Interesting history

Not exactly overwhelming but given that a few hundred years have passed one cannot expect much to be left. Visited as part of a walk

This has historical importance but is essentially the remnants of Flora's birthplace. Quite nice to experience the place and see the ruins of the other nearby houses. Short walk for from the gravel carpark

Just follow the tourist sign

We stumbled on this! Of course you have to visit if you’re a MacDonald and distantly related. Nothing really to see apart from ruins and some very badly weather damaged notice boards. However it’s a two minute detour off the main road to get a photo opportunity.

A little piece of history

Not much to say about it. It is what it is; the remains of Flora Macdonald's birthplace. Nice outlook over the countryside. Worth a quick visit.

Poor To say the least

Interesting history and story but not exactly up there when it comes to attractions. I was wild camping on a nearby beach and was out cycling so thought I’d drop by the ruin and have s look. Yes, humble beginnings but then so did so many Scott’s at that time. Unless your a fanatic about the Jacobite Rebellion and the failed adventure of Bonnie Prince Charlie I’d pass on Flora McDonalds Birthplace. Alternatively, 5 minuets here is more than enough.

She clearly had an unbelieveable life, between meeting Bonnie Prinve charlie, them moving to America, and being involved in independence battles in America, and moving back to scotland. I'd have thought that the locals could easil turn one of the local, ruined crofts into a little interactive exhibition of her life, with a souvinir and coffee shop, the area could really do with something, Instead it's beaten, worn plaque on a cairn, at the end of a farmers track, with alarge, but uneven, unmarked carpark, It's pity scotland doesnt make more out of her story, a wasted opportunity

Very interesting to be able to stand in the ruins of Flora's birthplace.

Came accross Flora's birthplace as we drove through South Uist. Enjoyed reading about her early childhood, her family and the help she gave to Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Humble beginnings for a huge legend
paź 2017 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
I visited Flora Macdonald’s Birthplace during a short stay on South Uist. To be honest there is very little to see - just a small monument and interpretation board amongst the ruins of a small long-abandoned township. Access is along a farm track adjacent to a private house and there are no facilities. Be warned.

Despite this, the location is very atmospheric, and an a wet and wild day amongst the stones I got a sense of the resilience of the people and of Flora herself. From these very humble beginnings her name echoes through history for her bravery and fortitude.

Well worth a visit and a moment of reflection.
