The little museum is nice, the gift shop has a few Livy crafts and good birding books and wildlife identifying cards.
We attended a free lecture there about bird recovery after the hurricanes that was very informative

My visiting friend was very interested in these ruins and an employee (Robert Marino) was kind enough to show us and explain the ruins. For those of you interested in history, politics and sugar, very interesting. Being comfortable shoes and some water... no bathroom and they are open all day, but I recommend early or between 4-5pm because it can get very hot during the day!

The Sugar Mill Ruins was absolutely one of the very best off the beaten path things we did while on Vieques for the week. It is not advertised as an attraction, but it is well worth a morning of adventure. There is no cost involved, and the only signage is at the entrance to the mills. A trip to Vieques Conservation and HIstorical Trust museum would have helped us appreciate our adventure more, but we ran out of time. Make sure you spray down with plenty of bug spray, and bring some along and wear good hiking shoes with socks. It becomes denser with foliage and warmer the deeper you go into the jungle. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy hiking, exploring and history.

We went as three adults - no children - and still spent over an hour there we were so fascinated by all the natural/history exhibits they have there. I'm positive families will equally enjoy a trip here - and I will bring my teens here the next time they visit VQS. While we were there we saw historical exhibits with photos, old swords, tools, etc. Then keep going back and you'll come across a bunch of water tanks with local marine life and a small mangrove exhibit with trees and marine life such as sea stars, puffer fish, sea cucumbers, caribbean lobsters, and a pretty cool-looking arrow crab to name a few.The staff member showed us around and let us hold a few live specimens (after cleaning our hands). It is really quite small, but keep going back and you find even more stuff to explore and learn about. There's even a bioluminescent room which we found very interesting.

There's also a small gift shop with t-shirts, nature books, etc.

It really is a must see!

The Bunkers you ask? Yes, they're right there on the cartoony tourist map you can pick up anywhere on the island. Maybe you are on the island just a couple days so you spend them Sunbay or at Navio or Caracas or in the bioluminescent bay. Good Choice. But, if you're there for a week and you're curious and hey, those bunkers look so easy on that map, maybe you decide to drive up that wide horse covered road toward the radar and the sugar mill...And then you take a right.

And here's what happens. There's not one road like on the tourist map, there are several..dozens? They get more and more narrow. Are they actually roads? They are paved but they are no wider than your vehicle. You find yourself thanking your stars that you agreed to the insurance as the screech of the bramble on the jeep's sides gets louder and louder. No, Waze doesn't work and you have no cell signal. But that's the thrill? Then you see a few opened Bunkers. TV monitors and water heaters (yes) litter the path you are driving. You start mumbling lines from Deliverance as you try to navigate out of the Bunker maze. You give thanks that you decided to come up with plenty of day light. And then maybe, when you return to your hotel bed safe and sound you google some pictures of the Bunkers themselves and stories of people who have pulled Indiana Jones like moves to see what was in them.

The hair on my neck was too stiff to get out of the jeep. There isn't much explanation of the Bunkers in any of the island literature or guides. Enjoy?

For the inner Indiana Jones inside each of us! A fun adventure with what seems like endless corridors and tunnels to explore. Probably one of my favorite things to do on the island. Wear pants, hiking shoes, and bug spray!

The significance of the once-thriving Vieques sugar cane industry comes to life during this very interesting tour of the Playa Grande Sugar Plantation ruins. The tour begins with a short ride out to the ruins followed by an hour long trek through jungle footpaths hacked out by dedicated Trust volunteers. Tour Guide Anthony is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable as he tells many fascinating facts and stories about the artifacts, stonework, foundations, etc, he and his colleagues have uncovered over the years. Anthony is so passionate in his narrations that it is easy to imagine the plantation's long-ago grandness. . Vieques may be known for its beaches, but a morning with Anthony's tour is a must-see to appreciate its culture and history..

We took the sugar mill ruins tour with Robert Marino through the Trust. He was so informative (really a historian) and made our tour exciting. We love learning so much about the island as well. The Trust is doing important work to teach the children of the island, protecting the environment, and the Biobay (I'm sure I have forgotten something) Anyways, they were hit hard by hurricane Maria, and they deserve all the support you can give them. The bird tour is great too- go do it- even if you are not a birder. I can't say enough good things about this place. Another way you can support them is to shop at their gift store.

Vieques is a small island with unique history--ecological, political and anthropological. This small organization brings together exceptionally well-informed people dedicated to telling the stories of Vieques and preserving the history and environment of this unique community. Don't just be a tourist--spend a little time with the experts here to learn about what makes Vieques special.
