I decided to visit Krossneslaug despite the long and cumbersome drive after having read some raving reviews online. I guess a lot of other people had read those reviews too because the pool was extremely busy when I visited.

The location was lovely and everything was very clean and well organised but I found the pool simply too busy. There were plenty of families with children (ugh) and also a group of youngsters who basically hogged the jacuzzi the whole time I was there. Granted, I visited in July, which is the high season.

That’s the reason why Krossneslaug was not my favourite hotpot in Westfjords although in advance I fully expected it to be. Perhaps it is just over-hyped?

The scenery in Strandir is gorgeous though so the coast is well worth a visit. And if you manage to go when it is quiet, you can have a wonderful experience in Krossneslaug too.

I'm pretty sure I will never relive the experience of floating all alone in this completely naturally heated pool at the edge of the world while it's 2 degrees Celsius outside, seeing the sun hit the horizon and sipping a beer at 1 AM.

We were staying in Norðurfjörður as part of a three day guided tour to Strandir and we spent both evenings at Krossneslaug before having dinner. It was the perfect way to relax after a long day of driving or hiking and the view out to the ocean is simply amazing. I enjoyed both the pool and the hot pot.
I would have liked to take a dip in the ocean as well, but on the first night I didn't have my water shoes (and the rocks can be very slippery) and on the second night the waves were too strong to make this a safe adventure.
Make sure you shower and wash your hair thoroughly without your bathing suit on before entering the pool to keep it clean. If you come after hours and there is no attendant, make sure you put money into the honesty box.

When people ask me about my favorite experience in Iceland, it's impossible to pick one - but this is the most surreal and breathtaking to describe. You drive through Holmavik, through the fantastic hotel in Djupavik, and then up north, circling treacherous gravel roads that outline the fjords. Finally, you come upon this little pool on the side on the road - far down at the beach below. It doesn't look like much. You come down a flight of stairs off to the side, leave a bit of cash in a box at the entrance (there's not a soul around) and enter the pool.

Suddenly, you find yourself sitting in a warm pool at the edge of the world, staring out into the frigid Northern sea. The waves crash on the rocks. The nearest town is a hundred kilometers away, and you're on the other side of the world from everything you know; everything that stresses you out. Safe, warm, out in a little human outpost in the total Icelandic wilderness. It's surreal and beautiful.

If you have time, go there.

I feel a bit of a fraud posting on here simply because I have been so often to Krossneslaug that part of my heart is, and will always be, in that most beautiful spot.

There is something truly magical about this pool - the location, the view, the people.

The drive to Norðurfjörður is one of the most scenic in Iceland (I have travelled extensively in Iceland so can say that with some conviction). In every weather, in every light in every season it has something new to see.

The water in the pool is perfectly warm to majestically float, often for hours, maybe chatting, maybe reading, maybe just being in the moment. The sound of the ocean waves against the adjacent beach is calming and hypnotic. The little hot pot next to the pool is a great place to share travellers’ stories.

The pool is also accessible 24/7, which adds to the charm of this wonderful place.

That there is are still gems like this in Iceland is remarkable and comforting. And I would say in response to some of the descriptions on here, think of Krossneslaug (and the adjacent Kaffi Norðurfjörður) not as a detour, but as a destination.

I am leaving Iceland now but I will be back to Krossneslaug before long.

Krossneslaug is a swimming pool directly near the ocean. Of course it's still something special to swim in a pool in such a location, but unfortunately it's no secret anymore. When I was there I counted at least 10 cars on the parking area and this means too many people for this small pool.
So, if you are staying in the area go there and enjoy, but I would not do a detour just to get there.(it's about 90km gravel road from Holmavik)

No, there's no yoga involved; who needs it when you're soaking in thermal waters situated at the end of the world.

Shed your cares and weary traveller's bones with a visit to this most scenic and relaxing locale.

Entry costs approximately USD$5 for adults; it will be the best five dollars you spend in the whole of Iceland.

We went there during our stay at Urtindardur - it's nothing like a natural hotpool but it was really enjoyable.
THE views are awesome and the staff is very friendly.

I was skeptical reading all the rhapsodic reviews about this pool. I mean, it's a pool. Something to take a dip and do a few laps in. How amazing can it be?
Well. I was wrong . There's nothing quite like being in a pool at the edge of Iceland, seeing the sun set, gazing up at the stars, watching and hearing the roar of the waves crashing on the shore. Apparently you can even view the northern lights from the pool, if you're lucky. So I agree with this pool's many fans--it's awesome, glorious, etc etc. An experience to remember.
Totally worth the drive and the price of admission.

Go to the end of the world in March. Find a private geothermally heated pool. Swim and watch the ocean crash on the rocks.

It makes no sense that this place exists but it does, so you should go.
