Great spot for viewing the Matterhorn (and a well deserved lunch)!
wrz 2019
Beginning our hike in town, it took my wife and I two hours to reach the Edleweiss Hut (that was closed). Past the Hut, we went left (not right towards Trift Hotel) and climbed the tougher way to Hohbalmen in two more hours. The views from the plateau are amazing! Viewing the mountain from about mid height, rising above the surrounding valleys and peaks, is a much better perspective than down in the valley. We had spectacular weather - cool and sunny with a light breeze and wispy clouds. After lunch, we turned right, went down to Trift Hotel (that was also closed) and came back down Trift Gorge that had spectacular Fall color. These are tough trails - steep climbs but firm ground underfoot (almost no scree), medium exposure and reasonable elevation - but totally enjoyable! We filtered water from one of the creeks on the way up and the Trift Creek on the way down. Highly recommended! Many thanks to Diane Greer's Trail Description at the hikingwalking website.

Blue skies on top of the world
gru 2018
I am not an avid skier. Being from the states and going to ski in the Alps made me very nervous and I was intimidated by the idea. Day 1 we toke the Gornergrat up and played on the blue (easy) slopes. These slopes are so wide and flat! They are so flat you have to push yourself with your arms some of the way! Super easy, not intimidating at all!
Day 2 we went up to Trockener Steg. Again, I was nervous because there are more red slopes here than blue. Some of the reds have a steep little run but overall it was very easy. The slopes are wider than anything I have ever seen in the states and all levels have an opportunity for fun.
Day 3 the Gandeghutte opened to Italian side. Make sure to check before you go if your intention is to ski over to the Italian side. The winds from that side will cause the gondola's to shut down. Again, beautiful wide slopes that were a joy to ski! My finance says the lasagna at Theodul Pass is the best but they were out on the day we were there.
Note - check the times of the last ride back to the Swiss side. If you stay on the Italian side too long, you may get stuck there. The map makes it appear just around the corner but it is actually just around the mountain, which is a 7 hour $1000 taxi ride. And if you think getting a room in Cervenia would be cheaper, you will find the rooms are all sold out!

Have fun!

My favourite walk in zermatt

The views of the valley and the surrounding mountains from up here are just stunning. The best part being it is not overrun with daytrippers as the cable cars and trains don't run on this side of the valley.

My favourite full day hike in Switzerland
sie 2016 • Znajomi
I've done this hike three summers running now, and it's still my favourite full day hike in Switzerland. The views and diversity of scenery are fantastic, as is the fresh cake and homemade iced-tea at Trift. Perfect for fit adults and teenagers - the long uphill climb at the start might be tough for younger children. After Trift there is nowhere to get food or drink for several hours, so make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, as well as your camera. So much of Zermatt is quite built up due to ski infrastructure, but this side of the valley is much wilder.

Best view in Zermatt
lip 2016 • Dla rodziny
I've been hiking there for years, the first time I was 6 and I'm now 21! You never get tired of the view, nor do you get used to how impressive it is.
It is the perfect spot to see the sun rising behind the Monte Rosa and illuminating the Matterhorn! However, you need to sleep in trift and wake up early!
At least 3-4 hours one way from Zermatt so good hikers only!

Amazing Hike

The Hohenweg Hohbalmen or Edelweissweg is one of the best hikes I've ever done. Definitely challenging - 8 hours to go about 12 miles - but worth every step. Amazing views, stunning scenery, waterfalls, mountains, etc. Just beautiful.

One of my favourite hikes in Zermatt
sie 2015 • Pary
Rated as a hard hike, I agree you must be fairly fit for this hike mainly for the steep ascent and descent and the overall length of the trail. That being said there is nothing dangerous about this trail and it is well sign posted the whole way. Excellent views. Take lots of water. Because it is a challenging hike, it is less busy than other hikes. I would not hike this trail in poor weather.

What a great way to spend a day!

Fantastic views

A vigorous hike with a significant altitude change, but the views are fantastic. If the weather is clear and you can handle the challenge, this is a wonderful hike to undertake

Astonishing

You must be fairly fit if you don't want to turn this breathtaking walk (18km, +1200m vertical drop) in front of the Matterhorn into a nightmare. If you are, do not miss the opportunity. There are simply no words to describe it, just go there and see it yourself
