It’s a tiny city centre. We couldn’t visit any museums because either a) the queues were horrific or b) they were closed completely or c) they had reached daily capacity by 10.30 am.

It’s possible that Covid was the reason but I’m not convinced it’s any more visitor friendly under usual circumstances.

The shopping area is tiny and whilst the streets are pretty there is little to see for more than a day. We stayed for two nights after a two week trip through France and were happy to continue on through Italy.

A must see when you are visiting Tuscany.
The 'Centro Storico' looks like centuries have passed without bringing remarkable changes.
One day might be just enough to wander around and see the Campo, the Cathedral, parts of the medieval city walls and some other highlights.
Take two to three days to explore the city a bit better.

Most people visit Siena for the day. It's worth much, much more of your time than that. The city center is a terrific place to just sit and enjoy. You get all the conveniences of modern life along with a feel of a Gothic city.

Our Rick Steves guide book praised Siena. He is correct. We loved Siena. We felt we were really seeing a living working City. I actually liked it better than Florence.

We stayed two nights. Was it worth it to stay overnight? Absolutely! Don’t even think of coming just for the day as the atmosphere changes completely at night when the hordes of tourists leave. We loved walking around the city at night all lit up without all the crowds.

To come to Tuscany and not come to Siena would truly be a shame as it has so much to offer. I felt I was seeing part of the real Italy here. If we had only come for the day, I probably would not have enjoyed it as it would be too rushed and you can’t see everything.

Tip: 2 full days are needed to see the highlights but more days would be better. I did feel two full days are enough but would have liked an extra day.

We only had 1 day in Siena’s historic centre. It wasn't enough. In fact it was a ridiculously short time. Siena’s historic centre was one of our favourite days but in hindsight, we really short-changed ourselves. I know it is popular as a day trip from Florence but if it is at all possible, I’d recommend spending more than one day here.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The whole historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the two big highlights of our visit were the Piazza Del Campo and the Duomo.
The piazza was a very good starting point - there is so much to see in the piazza alone. It is dominated by the the imposing castle-like Palazzo Pubblico, the 14th century Torre Del Mangia which was built to rival (and beat) Florence’s towers and the Fountain of Joy (who can resist a fountain with a name like that). If you have time, you can climb the tower for stunning views over Siena (museum/tower ticket € 13). The famous bare-back Palio horse-race is also held here and it was the setting for a James Bond chase scene in Quantum of Solace.
The area around the piazza is a pedestrian only zone and its easy to walk between all the main sights. From the piazza, it is lovely to wander through Siena’s narrow lanes and cobblestone streets to the Duomo.
The Duomo is absolutely stunning and can easily take a couple of hours. We spent much longer here than we’d imagined. Again, there’s an awful lot to see in the one place - Donatello, Michelangelo and Bellini works, the Piccolomini library, the crypt and, time permitting, the Door of Heaven rooftop tour.
To avoid wasting precious time in queues, I’d recommend booking ahead.

ARRIVING BY CAR: If you arrive by car, it is important to know that Siena’s historic centre is a ZTL zone and cars are restricted from entering. We parked outside the city walls in the Santa Caterina public carpark and walked in. It was very convenient because it was very close to the outdoor escalators which took us right up to the old town. From the carpark, walk a short way uphill, look out for the large pink building on your right and you’ll see a sign for the escalators which are also on your right (see photo). They will bring you up just a couple of hundred metres from the Duomo.

Siena certainly deserves a couple days visit. One day visits which are most popular these days are not enough. I highly recommend to take a personal local guide or to read and be prepared before visiting. There’s a lot going on in Siena, which is not very obvious. Contradas and its traditions for ex.

Even without the major attractions such as the Duomo and the Campo Siena would till be worth a visit for it's charming pedestrian area of medieval streets and lanes with their interesting shops and architecture. We always park at the Porta Roma, which allows for a pleasant one-kilometre stroll up a gentle incline towards the Campo. The further one goes the more people one encounters! But it's always a magical moment getting near the Via di Citta when you see the Campo and the Torra del Mangia down a side alley. But take your time all over the historic centre to look into little lanes and courtyards, shops and cafes. Brilliant!

The city is set on a hillside, so there are many ups and downs. The best option is to take the escalator near Porte Fontebranda to the top and wander your way through the fantastic medieval street and sites of the city. Many expensive shops, local food, and amazingly preserved structures.

Most of the Siena visitors come there for one day visit. This means to come around 11am and to leave 5pm latest. We were staying over the night, so we got to the city center at around 6pm. Miracle. Almost empty streets, touristic shops closing down, locals doing their grocery shopping, chatting with neigbours...just incredible. The illusion of being back in 14th century in the quiet summer evening was almost perfect. This was my best historical town experience ever.

I came to Sienna 20 years ago and loved the old world charm and businesses that had probably been in the family for 200 years. We came back and the streets are still cobble stone and the walls are still brick but now there are very modern era stores that you can visit in most urban down towns. I still love sienna but it’s not what I remember. Also, if you drive here park at the Train station. Only 2 euro for the whole day and you can go through a mall to get here via moving sidewalks.
