Well worth the visit
lut 2021 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Not the mainstream attraction but we’ll worth the visit. The Shoah Memorial of Milano 🇮🇹 Italy, located right at the back and beneath the Milano Centrale Train Station. A very solemn atmosphere with the museum. Entry is free and guided tours are available only in Italian.

Definitely a Moving Experience
sie 2020
Visiting the Shoah Memorial in Milan is a very moving experience. Partly because I found the last name of one of my co-workers, whose Jewish heritage father had fled fascist Milan in the 1930's (was is a relative?). This site is unique b/c most WWII sites in Europe focus on heroism and the terrible finality; whereas the Shoah Memorial gives a vivid sense of how terrifying the deportation journey must have been, starting with the horrible uprooting from home to the central rail station at nighttime with no idea of where anyone was going. The rail cars were designed for animals (6 horses) and actually carried 75+ human beings for a week in the winter. The dark industrial decor emphasizes the horror. I disagree with the prior reviewer about the lack of English legends (the site is in Italy after all). And the the docent-led visit is very well done & highly recommended. This visit is somewhat a sad event, but regardless I can recommend it to anyone interested in this aspect of history.

We should never forget
sty 2020
We should never forget the horrors inflicted on our fellow humans no matter how long ago it was. This is a sobering memorial if you can call it that charting how people were shipped to the concentration camps and to certain death. I would have liked to have understood what the survivors were saying when they spoke about their ordeal and how they felt, but it did not take away from how extremely sad this episode in our history was and how we should never allow anything like this to happen again.

Moving Memorial
kwi 2019 • Pary
This site is located at the main train station and so is a good last attraction before boarding a train out of Milan. It’s obviously not a cheery spot as it is the genuine area where Jewish people were forced on to a train to head to the concentration camps under the Nazis rule. A train carriage from this time remains as part of the memorial and the tracks are still in place.
There are some interesting exhibits about the people that left via this spot in the war but all of the text is in Italian with no English anywhere. They do provide a downloadable audio guide for English visitors and signs at the ticket area explain how to gain it.
If they added English text at this site I believe it would improve the memorial in that it would make it more available to all.

Totally disappointed! This is not a good "Thing To do" place if you don't know Italian.
maj 2019 • Pary
Honestly, I seldom give that low grade to a sightseeing spot, but this one really made us disappointed. This was the last spot of our Milan trip, and it ended badly.

We did visit different places about WWII, Nazi, concentration camp in many other countries, so we may think this will be the same standard as the others, however, the display and content are very less and thin, so little wordings to explain the history with a few old photos, which is really disappointed. Visitors who want to come here is to know more about the history and stories, but we are failed to know it. All displays and information are in Italian, I don’t know why there are enough space, but they won’t put up any English translation on the wall displays. We have to download the guide apps and also found that English information is too little, we want to discover the place but what we did is only look into our phone for English information. What’s the point we came far away here to look at our phone? If the museum has too many information or lack of display space, I understand that visitors may have to use the audio guide / guide apps, Memoriale Della Shoah Di Milano do not have much information to display already, so I think that is not much extra work for them to do if they also put on English translation on wall.

Something more ridiculous are the videos, there are serval video display booths showing different short clips in Italian without English subtitles, so English visitors can only watch the same video (English subtitled) on their phone, then why I should sit down at the video booth and watch the video on phone? It doesn’t make sense!
Why can't they put up the same subtitled video on the projector!?!?

Paid 10 Euro to enter the Memorial, we only spent less than 20 mins here. Meaningless to use 10 Euro for downloading a free apps and didn’t get much history knowledge here.

Important, obviously, but also borderline offensive at the same time
maj 2019 • Pary
It's difficult to rate this place. It is obviously an important part of history but it is also of limited value since 90% of the exhibits and audio visual materials are only offered in Italian. Just being there will, of course, give you a sense of foreboding as you try to imagine what it must have been like for the victims of Hitler's so called Final Solution who passed through here.

What makes this memorial so powerful is that it is located in the actual train station from which Jews and other victims of the nazis were sent to their deaths at Auschwitz. There are boxcars (real or replicas?) and train tracks and a giant wall of victims names on display.

What makes this place offensive is that you will be hard pressed to find the word "Jew" in more than a couple of mentions and it seems to equate all victims of the holocaust the same. Yes, many others were killed including Roma, the handicapped, homosexuals, political opponents and more but the holocaust was about the attempt to exterminate Jews and the museums failure to acknowledge this is offensive to their memory.

The only extant Nazi deportation site
mar 2019 • Pary
Helpful staff, some actual railway deportation wagons that can be entered, huge list of victims' names, a sobering exprience. It was amazing to see it all still there, eg the machinery used to lift the wagons, filled with victims, onto the tracks above ready to be dispatched to Auschwitz or other extermination camps. The site (a former mail sorting basement), had been forgotten until recently.

It is one of three (unexpectedly) most interesting places for tourists to visit in Milan. A great supplement to history lessons for the youth people.

reviews do not capture the importance of this monument
wrz 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
During WW II, Jews, Roma and the disabled were deported to Nazi death camps from this hidden platform under Milan central train station. Yes, the exhibit is both stark and jarring. But disappointing? How can one describe this as disappointing?? What did you expect? This monument preserves a disturbing part of Italy's history.
To locate it, proceed to the train station and walk one block north.

Very moving in its simplicity
wrz 2018 • Pary
Although directly located below the Central Train Station, there is no mention of the museum at the Station. You must go outside the station and enter through a separate entrance guarded by armed soldiers. The museum show the original cattle cars and tracks used to send Italian Jews to their deaths. The trains would be raised from the basement area on elevators after the cars were packed with people. It is very sobering and sad. The museum is still being completed. The special exhibition on the role of Jews in Italian society before the war was fascinating. Not to be missed but not easy to find.
