Very weird mixture of construction outside.

Really impressive inside. The ceiling is stunning as are the pillars, stained glass and altar. The colours projected into the building are really interesting. Recommended.

A look at Gothic style inside Napoli
sty 2020
Completed in 1324, Basilica San Domenico Maggiore resides near "Spaccanapoli" in the historic center of Naples, and containing both an older church plus a monastery nicely represents the Gothic style with well preserved works of art and tremendous detailing throughout its fairly small interior.

Church Dating Back To 1283
cze 2019 • Pary
This church, located in what is considered as the center of old Naples was built by the Dominican Friars and started in 1283 and was completed in 1324. It sits in the square of the same name and has one of three plague obelisk's in the square with Saint Dominica on top.one of many interesting churches and squares in this part of Naples.

Take the tour!
lut 2019 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
This fanatstic gothic Church still serves a community of Dominical Friars. St Thomas Aquinas studied here and returned for two year to teach, a period that ended with his death. If you take the tour (book via website or at the church (desk near old sacristry), you can enter St Thomas' cell and see the original talking crucifix (the one in the church is a copy). This is very exciting. Other fine things are on display, including some of the clothes of the royals and other folk laid to rest in the sacristy who were reclothes in the last century.

I was the only visitor last Sunday and so had the whole tour to myself!

Clothes, coffins and a piece of the cross
sty 2019 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Went into this church because it was there and spotted that there was a small musem for a few euro extra. Bought the ticket and went in not really doing any research on what to expect.
There is a room with 42 velvet covered coffins on a balcony, of former Aragon royalty, the room itself it also beautiful.
The clothes have been removed from the bodies would you believe and are on display in magnificent huge wardrobe like cabinets and drawers in the second room, along with other relics.
If you have paid the full price the third part of the tour is into the working monastery guided by museum staff - it was a personal tour for me because there were no other visitors at this time. The long and airy sunlit coridoor is beautiful in itself and is where the monks bedrooms still are. Tomas Aquinus studied here and you are also shown his rooms (very small) and one of his works. Oh, and they also have the obligatory relic claiming to be a crown from the crown of thorns and an actual piece of the cross. The main part of the church you can visit for free is pretty good too, first Bishop of New York who died before he arrived is also remembered here.

Magnificent Discovery
lis 2018 • Pary
The church and the attached monastery is located in front of the university of Neaple, "L'Orientale". The visitor should not miss the guided tour to the monastery, led by a young and qualified lady.
We discovered the enigmatic Christ, Salvator Mundi of Leonardo school. The very feminine visage (almost Maddalena) and decollete, the 360 degree of his eyes and the transparent "mundi", like a fortune teller.
The cell of Tommaso d'Aquino who was rather fat, not resembling to the current iconography.
The statue for the church made in of pressed paper and mud, to avoid robbery.
Simply Magnificent.

So glad we found this by accident!
lis 2018 • Pary
If you enjoy visiting incredible churches like we do, make time to visit Chiesa di San Domenico Maggiore. We were simply walking along roads our host had suggested enjoying the day and found this by accident. 3 hours later we were so glad we did. Most folks will likely only send an hour, but we simply kept finding amazing things at every corner and spent a good part of our day here.
