I was not expecting it to be this good.

You can't go wrong by visiting the Alte Synagoge as it's free to begin with. We knew we wanted to visit the Synagoge, however we had not thought that we would do the free audioguide - so glad we did. The history of the Synagoge is explained as are the traditions and way of life of the Jewish people. They have have a coat rack downstairs for you to leave your coat. Large bags are not allowed inside, however there are a limited number of lockers downstairs by the coats. We stayed for almost all of the explanations and it took us close to two hours to see everything. The explanations are short enough and the visuals are good, there is plenty of sitting time as well as time to walk around and see things, you can literally make this a short visit or a long relaxing visit. It's a nice break away from the shopping and/or Christmas Market. The staff are so friendly and helpful.

House of Jewish culture
paź 2019 • Znajomi
What an amazing place is that.
It used to be a synagogue and nowadays it's a center of information about Jewish life and culture in general.
Definitely take the audioguide, it's superb.
There are different parts of the exhibition you can visit. There is one about the history of this place, one about the history of the Jews in Essen, furthermore there is information about Jewish holidays and about Jewish life and traditions.
Did you know how many Hebrew words we integrated in our language? How the different holidays are being celebrated? How a thora roll is being made?
I have learned so many new things by coming here. The place is very welcoming and the displays are interesting, multimedial and modern. You can even learn some Jewish folk dances! Just follow the instructions and watch yourself in the mirror.
I would recommend everybody to have a look here, it's really a hidden gem in the city of Essen. Suitable for all ages.

A historical building with a extensive and very interesting tour around Jewish culture in any way: festivities, foods and religion. A versatile audio guide completes an interesting journey through Judaism

Important monument!

Having been born and lived in Essen for 25 years, I have visited the Alte Synagoge numerous times and participated in the Gedenbuckprojekt in school. I like the new exhibit (not sure how new it is though as I haven't been here in a few years), however, some of the parts of the exhibit could benefit from a consultant familiar with life in Israel).

I WANTED TO GIVE IT 6 STARS!
kwi 2017 • Pary
The imposing building standing firmly on the corner of a busy, noisy road - is a testimony to how much work has gone on to make the inside a place of learning, of beauty, of fascination and quite simply, of joy.
It is no longer a consecrated place of worship.
You really don't have to be Jewish to appreciate and understand what you will see here.
The way the exhibits are designed and the 'inclusivity' for people of all ages and nationalities, can teach several other museums a thing or three.

Outside, the building is imposing - Inside, it is stunning. The renovations have been sensitive and beautifully carried out. Everywhere you look - there is beauty.

We didn't have much time, so we were able only to enjoy a 'taste' of all the historical and current information.

Despite all the work that has clearly been carried out and the fact that it is managed by Essen Council - it remains FREE!

Please make the effort to go there and make sure YOU have enough time to experience this wonderful place.

Unusual insights
sie 2016
We visited the alte Synagoge with our children (11,12 and 15 years old) and were positively taken on the unsusal approach to the everyday life of jewish people. The holidays, customs and traditions are nicely displayed and easy to understand, sometimes with a nice twist of humour. Oh, and the entrance is free of charge!

Glad I took the time to visit. At the front desk I was able to check out an audio English tour . Could really figure out how to get audio to match the museum but the tracks I listened to were interesting . Miracle this synagogue survived so that alone makes it special .
