It may be just a hi-tech village fair with Germans drinking lots of beer and singing aloud but it is a nice and friendly event that a foreigner definitely should not miss.
Over half a dozen huge (really huuuuge) beer tents seating over 5,000 each with ... well, unusual is probably the polite word ... music and a lot of hustle and bustle. Beer tents are an absolute must (despite the music) for they show the human and friendly side of the Germans. It is pretty amazing how cheerful, nice, smiling and welcoming everyone is.
The beer is great. Comes in 1 litre mugs only, with each tent serving products of a different brewery but there is still choice and whoever finds a complaint with the beer deserves to be called all sorts of names. Beer tent food is surprisingly good and fresh. Huge benches offer an opportunity to mix with the crowd and meet some real Schwabians, including many who don traditional clothes for the occasion. Girls look fabulous in their Dindrl.
While ony would normally frown at the music that is very German, very Schlager and very bland - it does serve the purpose and one quickly forgets that it is awful. It simply does not matter: it is live and everyone sings along happily. On our second visit we did manage to find a tent that had what we foreigners consider 'German Blechmusic' - the southern brass band.
The downside of having nearly 100,000 people roaming the place, no matter how vast it might appear, is that it is absolutely necessary to book a table at the tents in the evenings and over the weekend. Each tent operator offers online booking but it is quite complicated, not very user-friendly and most ask for credit card details over a non-secure site. So for the first day we had to risk going without a booking and had to endure a pretty long wait, though a non-stressful one.
The minor glitches, including overcrowded toilets, do not spoil it. It is a huge popular event fit for families where one is reassured that everything will run smoothly by the sight of efficient bouncers and everpresent but extremely discrete police officers. Despite the fact that average consumption of beer must be... unspeakable - one never feels unsafe. On the contrary - Germans present themselves as warm, welcoming and considerate.
We will be back with our wives.

This is a must-see, especially if you are new to Germany. You will see people dressed in traditional outfits and it is charming and fun. There are people of all ages dancing on the tables with a liter of beer in hand, singing along with the live band. It's an experience you can't get anywhere else. You can also ride the rides and try some specialty foods while there.

Absolutely brilliant. Came for the weekend, booked a table in advance so we had somewhere to sit in the evenings, although people seem to spend as much time standing on the benches as they do sitting on them. Atmosphere in the evenings was amazing, everyone was very friendly and none of the aggression you would get in the UK if thousands of people were consuming as much beer. The earlier you book the table the better placed it will be, in the middle of the hall the party really is wild. The food in the halls is good, but outside it is a bit more hit and miss and nowhere I saw offered a great vegetarian choice. Overall a highly enjoyable experience.

We attended the Sonja Merz Zelt tent on Sunday 8th October 2023. It was an OK night,
singers were the best. However, the worsted was at the end of the night.
I go refused entrance to the toilet, because the tent was closing. When I said I wouldn't be 5 minutes I got pushed to the floor loosing my hat and damaging my clothes in the process and loosing my glasses, then forcibly removed from the tent.
I am a 62 year old man so I didn't pose a threat to the bunch of 30 year old security guards it was just excessive and unnecessary force. I also did see other people getting ejected from the tent during the cause of the evening. There was a noticeable presence of security far more than on Saturday night in the another tent we frequented.
I would avoid this tent the security guards seem to like conflict and they are not scared of dishing it out. Utter disgrace they should be ashamed of themselves.

I have been to this fest 3 times and it is by far better than the Oktoberfest in Munich. I say this because I have also been to that fest a few times as well. The difference is the ability to get an actual beer. In Munich you must be in a tent and have a table to sit at to get a beer. This can be difficult on weekends because it is SO crowded. The Stuttgart Cannstadter fest allows you to get a beer outside the tents and is less crowded, not to mention a little cheaper. Also the Stuttgart fest really is almost the same, just a little more user friendly! I prefer it and I think you would too! Go if you want a GREAT time with a true German experience.

We arrived in Germany too late for Oktoberfest, so we opted to take in this festival instead. We were not disappointed. My husband really enjoyed touring the beer tents, and I loved wandering through the rides and food stands. There's no admission fee to enter the fest, you only need to pay money if you want to go on the rides, eat, etc.
For all of the people there, I didn't feel "crowded", like you sometimes can at places like Disney. Prices for the rides were reasonable, although I feel we paid a bit more than I would have expected for the food we ordered in the tent.
My husband wants me to note that the bathroom situation was a bit sketch in the beer tents - don't expect the Ritz (or even the Super 8).

another great place to visit in Stuttgart/Bad Cannstatt. Twice a year this place comes alive. April/May and September/October. Unlike other places in the world where you have to pay an entrance fee - this one is completely free ! Go and enjoy the atmosphere, the rides, fun and food. And when you have kids, go on Wednesday for kids day, all rides are one EURO and above.

-Great selection of rides and rollercoasters
-Friendly local people
-Good food and beer
-Proximity to train station and VFB Stuttgart Stadium
Only down side was a lot of the tents were hard to get into without bookings/wristbands. We managed to get in the Stuttgarter Hofbrau which was a great evening.

Like beer? Like “Hendl”? Like traditions? Like having a good time? If you honestly can answer at least one question with yes, you should visit the Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest .
Some people claim that most people attend the Oktoberfest in Munich to booze and it may be true. To the Wasen they go also to get drunk, but in addition because of the various kinds of fairground rides. A ride on a roller coaster or on a fairground ride after having some drinks is definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Then the martini (ehhhm beer?!) is shaken and not stirred. Sorry Mr. Bond.

Hi,
Do you know if Neckar Park is opened around the year or it is only opened during festivals? I'm planning to be in Stuttgart in July and I want to be sure it will be opened.
Thank you very much
