It used to be a fountain
mar 2019
Fontaine Amedee Pichot is near the entrance to Arles coming from the train station (Gare d’Arles) and going toward the Arena. The fountain doesn’t work or at least it wasn’t working when my wife and I were in Arles this past March.

Nice former fountain

Although no longer a working fountain the picture and sculpture is well worth looking at when walking round Arles. It is on the historic route round the town.

The medallion on the wall is remembered better than the fountain.
lis 2017 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Tourists visit Arles for the ancient heritage, like me, for instance, for van Gogh. Those tourists are searching Arles of the end of the XIX century, which remained on the paintings of the most expensive impressionist of the world. Fountain of Amédée, Pichot that you will meet on your way from the North to the centre not be attributed neither here nor there. Of course, van Gogh could meet this fountain opened in 1887, but his paintings did not remain the traces of that. The fountain is named after the mayor of Arles who paid 10,000 francs for it. That is, he who pays the Piper calls the tune. Just that In the cynical bourgeois France, imprinted in the novels of Balzac and Maupassant. The fountain itself made by sculptor Joseph Flandrin, But rather the huge medallion on the wall will remain in the memory of the tourists. It lined with glazed ceramic tiles, mistaken for a mosaic. This medallion was created by Paul Blaze. The idea to place the fountain near such a wall is inspired by a similar design on Saint-Michel square in Paris. This brightens up the simple fact that the fountain doesn`t work in late autumn. I would like to believe that it works in the summer.

It is a very dry fountain these days. The facade behind the fountain is well kept and is worthy of an inspection if you happen to be a passer-by here.

Nice fountain in side the gates

This fountain is at the end of a building and straight in front of you as you come through the Porte de la Cavalierie. It is a very nice sight before you turn right to walk along the banks of the Rhone.

City landmark just inside the north gate
mar 2018 • Pary
A hundred years after its inauguration on 1 May 1887, the fountain remains at the main entrance to the city and is an integral part of the city landscape.
We first encountered the fountain walking from the train station to our hotel in Place Voltaire.
The fountain is constructed on the end of the house at the corner of Amédée-Pichot and Cavalerie streets, just after passing through the northern gate. The fountain, being backed by a building, was inspired by that of the Place Saint-Michel in Paris.

The centrepiece of the fountain is the enamelled medallion on faience tiles created by Paul Balze.

The bowl at the base of the fountain base and general area was somewhat unkempt. Hopefully, it will be cleaned up when water is turned on later in the spring. A large banner hanging on the fence in front of the fountain was also a detraction.

The fountain was in a state of disrepair and not running or even filled with water during a recent visit.
