Beautiful church in the busy fortified city. The windows are remarkably stunning. Went a few times during our trip to admire the beauty and peace and light candles. Just a shame it can feel very busy as everyone gathered at the square seem to go in out of curiosity. Best enjoyed during the Sunday mass.

Although the exterior of this Basilica and former cathedral - built in between 1096 and 1333 - is not that impressive, you should spend an hour inside.
The main items to look at are the stained-glass windows (14th to 16th century) and the 22 gothic sculptures directly cut in the pillars(14th century). In addition, you should pay attention to a wonderful pieta (16 century) and the baptismal font (15th).

We happened to amble into the church when someone was playing the organ. It was absolutely ethereal listening to the music while looking up at the stained glass windows. It was an experience we won't soon forget.

A 13th century Gothic church located in the medieval town. I think it is heavily reconstructed. The huge rosettes are very interesting, which I have not seen in other places

Spectacular medieval Roman Catholic cathedral inside the medieval Cité of Cacassonne.
It was demoted to a Basilica in the early nineteenth century, when the bishop moved his cathedra to St Michael's in the Ville Basse
Well worth seeing, both inside & out. Things to note:
- A painting of a Veronica
- A plaque commemorating St Dominic preaching here, Easter
1213
- Stained glass, especially the rose windows
- A statue of St Roche
- Near to the large bell on the floor of the South transept are what are thought to be a couple of vestiges of Simon de Montfort's tomb, now mounted on the wall. One is an etched image of Simon. The other is a carving showing his death (he was smacked on the head by a stone from a trebuchet, operated by the women of Toulouse). Easily missed if you don't know to look for.

This gothic church was built when Carcassone came under French rule during the Albigensian crusade. Before, there was a romanesque church, and even earlier, a Visigothic 5c. church. it was restored in the 19c. by Violet-le-Duc, like everything else. I especially like all the head corbels and other exterior carvings.

Very nice Roman and Gothic church. This was a worthwhile stop when in Carcassonne. We are Catholic and were amused by the sign that explained that the people who worshipped there were “followers of the Catholic cult”. Lost in translation, perhaps?

We live in a nearby village and visit The Medieval City frequently. I always stop at this beautiful church first, after walking the external ramparts after going through Porte Narbonne.

Boa sorte!
