A Glimpse into the past

Fantastic stop if travelling through Baltinglass. Ruins are impressive and there is a very informative description board at the entrance giving you some insight and history of the Abbey.

Worth Visiting If In The Area

Baltinglass Abbey is one among the many ruins in Ireland, not spectacular, but worth a short visit if in the area; one can always learn something new.

Worth a local visit

Visited here along with a number of other classic car drivers. Well worth a visit to recover our history in the area. Well kept and clean with a nearby Church of Ireland church still in use.

We visited here whilst visiting some other attractions in the area. The church next door is worth visiting too. Some free parking and some interesting artefacts

A must see

When in the area this is a must, it can be seen from the n81, however a little difficult to find, as you come into town cross the bridge it is the very first left, the abbey is located at the end of the lane, you will have it all to your self, unless there is a funeral, it is amazing to see at sunset as per the piccies attached.

Not listed in many tour guides but worth a visit

At one time Ireland was teaming with Cistercian Abbeys. Now it lies in ruins. Baltinglass was one of them. Built in the twelfth century out of granite that had to be hauled in, it is a sad commentary of a time when anything Catholic was razed to the ground. When you finish walking around the abbey, take a minute to tour the little village. It is a pretty special place.

Hidden gem
lis 2017 • Pary
Located next to the river slaney, is the picturesque remains/ruins of a cistercian abbey, built in the 1100's. It was really nice to walk around the arches on a sunny day, no one around when we visited, we had it all to ourselves, we are lovers of ruins of castles/abbeys/churches etc, this one was right up our alley. Awesome piccies to be had.

My wife and I called here in November. It was a lovely day and we do love our old Abbey's and graveyards. This one didn't disappoint. First time here and would love to call again. Beautiful buildings with a church within a church. Unfortunately there was no access to the tower which would have given great views.
