Well worth the visit to this fascinating place

I cannot recommend this place enough!! I went on a fantastic tour around the Cove - really interesting and full of history. It's not too difficult to get here on public transport from Edinburgh and well worth making a bit of an effort to get to the outskirts of the city to visit. Enormously recommend for anyone in the area who want to support a great charity to continue their work of bringing this to public attention.

Beautiful peace of historie right under the streets of Edinburgh. It’s not big but quite impressive.

Lots of information from the lovely guide, although still the mystery as to when they were first carved out. There are a couple of tables you get to sit at, wish I had brought a flask, would have been fun to have a cuppa and kitkat.

Interesting bit of history about the Edinburgh area, certainly worth a visit! The tour guide was friendly and informative. The underground passageways were good to explore!

We are local to Edinburgh and occasionally to visit more unknown places and and Gilmerton cove doesn’t fail to amaze!
The tour guide is very knowledgeable and sparks your imagination of what the coves could have been used for or who created them.
I couldn’t recommend it enough!

Unlike many of the other hidden gem in Edinburgh - no one is sure why this man made cove was made!

As soon as we arrived we were welcomed by a friendly and lovely lady who lead the tour. The tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable - you could tell she has general interest in the history of the cove.

At the end of the tour we were given time to walk around in our groups to check out parts of the cove more closely and take photos. We spent about an hour there.

Great value for money! Would recommend not arriving too early as there is not much else to do in the area - but arrive 15 mins early as there is things to read before the tour. We drove from Edinburgh city centre - we parked on the street in front of shops. Take a torch if you have one and some comfortable waterproof footwear .

Worth a visit

Interesting man made caves. You need to book a tour and they don’t run every day but some people on out tour had only booked that day. Easy to get to by bus from city centre. Don’t arrive too early as there is nothing else to do there. Others mentioned toilets in the community centre. But that is closed weekends. We didn’t see anyway open to get a cup of tea or bite to eat, though there is a Lidl close by. After the tour we were allowed to wander round on our own to have a look and take photos. Probably need to allow about an hour to visit. Wear suitable footwear as as well as being uneven ground it can get very wet. Also take a torch if you have one.

An intriguing and beguiling journey into the past

For lovers of the unusual, the mysterious and the intriguing this must be on your itinerary. Climb down the staircase and explore the beautiful subterranean passages and rooms. The questions about why, who and when these places were created cannot be answered, but that just adds to the appeal of visiting here.

Visited the Coves today with my husband. Absolutely fascinating tour with a lovely lady guide, full of enthusiasm which kept the whole group enthralled. Some uneven ground so flat shoes a must.

This place is fascinating. You need to book a tour- they don’t run every day but we were able to book for the next day without difficulty. Do not just turn up -you won’t be able to get in! The guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Amazing that these tunnels -and probably a lot more-have been hiding there all these years/ centuries....
Convenient community centre across the road for inexpensive refreshment.
