Be sure that you on top of your game when you play RCD & having a caddy who is on top of his game will certainly be an advantage. (I think that I had a caddy who would rather be sailing & he hated sailing!)
Will I have another go at RCD? Youbetcha.

It Lived Up to Its Amazing Reputation
sie 2019
We played 8 of the best golf courses in Ireland & Northern Ireland over 8 days and Royal County Down was the best of the best. I've been told by a number of friends that RCD is the best course they've ever played and it truly lived up to its amazing reputation. I'm not quite sure if it's my favorite in the world but it's definitely top 5 and my favorite on the Irish Isle. We had a great day. Our caddies were fun. The pace of play was good. And I played well, which always helps. I really can't wait to play it again someday!

Fantastic Golf
sie 2019
Probably the hardest course I've ever played but oh so special.... Unlike the US, many of the top tier clubs in Ireland offset their operating expenses by opening their doors to visitors and guest play. In Ireland, quality golf is a given. For me, a test is whether these clubs make the visitor feel welcome or not. Royal County Down was just great about welcoming guests. Never did we feel out of place or unwelcome and their pub/grille was open to the eight of us. Caddies were solid and the golf was just amazing. Just a superb experience.

The best golf course in the world.

Played RCD in near perfect weather conditions, it was absolutely fabulous, lots of blind tee shots, undulating fairways and tiny greens. Absolutely epic, also stay out of the bunkers, they are super tough to get out of. Only downside was a grumpy starter, who thought he was talking to children, but never worry about him, the course is well worth playing even at the huge green fee. We played off the yellow tees and this was more than enough of a challenge. Playing off the championship tees should be left to the low single figure players.

A challenging course in great condition - make sure you play off the appropriate tees according to your handicap.!!

A tough but most enjoyable day and be sure to take a caddie especially if it is the first time you are playing the course. The rough is very penalising but all in all the set up of the course is fair. Many bunkers are strategically situated round the course and due to the very fine sand they are really difficult to get out of - the greens are difficult too with plenty of run off areas. It is important to stay on the fairways if possible and believe it or not I actually finished with the same ball that I started with.!! If you can play your handicap on this course then you definitely have the wrong handicap.!! Some spectacular scenery and on reflexion this course is as tough as Carnoustie which is generally considered to be the most difficult of all the course on The Open circuit of 10 courses. We had fun and fortunately there was only light winds - have no idea what the cost is but whatever it is you must take the opportunity of playing this course if you are in the immediate area. Had a snack in the clubhouse afterwards which was pretty good and quickly served. Two slightly negative comments however - in the clubhouse the cost of some of the merchandise on offer with the County Down logo is excessive and between our arrival at the club and teeing off somebody removed my wife's brand new ( never opened ) golf umbrella from her bag and that was the last we saw of that umbrella. This should not happen as the golf bags were out in the open right by the clubhouse - so beware.!!

Annesley golf course royal co. Down

On a recent trip in our motor home to newcastle co. Down my husband and I wished to play the small course at royal co. down which we have done many times )

when in the area and it’s not far to travel for a couple of days as we live in bangor Co Down. We were shocked to find that it now costs £50 to play this course I find this is ridiculous fees to play this course, we are not Americans these courses are becoming far too expensive for local GUI MEMBERS to play (for goodness sake you don’t even need to hit driver on the course) what a pity these courses are increasingly becoming less and less accessible to locals we will not be playing there again

Highly rated course; only 5th best on our tour

One of the golf magazines rates Royal County Down as the best golf course in the world outside the US. It's a great course and a severe challenge buts it's 5th in my rankings of the 5 Irish courses we just played.

The first defect is how narrow the fairways are. There's only a ribbon out there to hit at and the rough is so thick you won't find a ball ten feet of the fairways. That qualifies as too punitive in my book and I'm a 7 handicap. Add in that many of the holes are very similar, long straight par fours with small flat greens and the "joy" factor is diminished.

To be fair we played on a very difficult weather day which made the course even harder. 2 club winds meant my approach shots on those par 4s were all wedges with the wind and all fairway woods against it.

9 is famous as one of the most daunting tee shots in the game. It is picturesque with the brick tower in town in the background but it can't hold a candle to 11 at Ballybunnion or 18 at Waterville for drama. And why is that little bog in the middle of the 17th fairway? I thought this was a links course.

I'd love to play RCD again in fair weather but at £230 that's not likely soon.

We had a great day playing am extremely challenging course.
Expertly advises by our caddie Dale. What a lovely man and so helpful.
You are punished off the fairway so shorter straighter works !

Great round and great caddies

This is one of, if not the best place I’ve played. The experience was really nice and we had excellent caddies in Dave although my daughter can’t remember he caddies’ name, he was also excellent and very helpful. Free coffee in the members lounge for visitors is a nice touch. Also had a well poured Guinness! The course is not lady friendly even to really good golfers, which my daughter is. She played mainly from the men’s tees as the women’s are often behind the men’s. Some say they try to discourage women’s play. We did not experience this but the tees are suspicious! The course was in early spring shape, so a B- in the fairways and and A on the greens. Really picturesque and a must see if you love the game.
