Wasted journey - thanks guys!

We arrived a little early for the expected 11:00 opening time and returned to find neither the museum or cafe open and no explanation. A number of frustrated locals also didn’t know what was going on. Perhaps a poster or even some info on your website would have been an idea? I get it that volunteer-led attractions like this may need to vary their hours, but there’s no excuse for leaving visitors guessing!

Visiting here is NOT a Folly

Saw the building and just had to see inside. We were not disappointed. The architecture alone was worth the visit. The inglenook fireplaces are fabulous. Added to it the local history and we loved it. We were really impressed with the family ancestors and histories. It was really different. A lot of work has gone into searching the censuses to achieve this. The attendant was helpful and answered all my questions patiently. It was fascinating to read about a trip the sixth form paid to my home town in 1901. It wasn't, just a load of old stuff. It was genuine local history. We loved it.

If you are in Settle, it would be a shame to miss it

The Museum is in The Folly, a house in the centre of Settle that was built in 1679 by a wealthy lawyer so, apart from the Museum, it is interesting to be able to have a wander round the house and learn about its history. It is £4 for entry and there are some lovely crafts to have a look at. There is a temporary exhibition called The Great Silence about the impact of war and a rather strange one called the Mythology of Silence. You can find out about the history of Settle and farming in the area and see some farm implements. There is a room giving information about the Settle-Carlisle Railway, and you can treat yourself to a drink and a cake in the cafe which is part of the building.

quirky and interesting little gem

This is a wonderful old building 17th century and houses a lovely cafe with the most enormous fireplace, it is cosy on a chilly day. It has a really interesting museum upstairs and on the stairwell they display a selection of 'knitted pictures ' these are mainly different buildings and houses all based in or around settle and have been produced as far as i can gather by a group of local ladies. The upstairs houses a really interesting museum. There is a pay and display car park just around the corner and you can walk into the town in a few minutes . Take note, Wednesday is half day closing !

A quirky sort of building in its own right and still in the process of refurbishment. Friendly staff with several exhibitions relating to local historical topics. Including inevitably fascinating information about the construction of the railway to Carlisle. Don’t leave Settle without paying a call here, and it won’t take too long to get around.
