Undervalued nature reserve
kwi 2021
This reserve is on the outskirts of industrial Teesside. Ignore the backcloth and enjoy the foreground. It has the advantage, now the hides are closed, of having open habitat. There was a good variety of birds, including Marsh Harrier. The highlight of the day was watching a Barn Owl quartering the hedges. There is extensive parking and the reserve is so large that it does not seem crowded.

Small and RSPB satellite reserve close to RSPB Saltholme
sie 2020 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
I visited a small RSPB reserve satellite reserve only 5-10 minutes walk from RSPB Saltholme and looked after by the RSPB Saltholme staff and volunteers. It is a very quiet RSPB reserve with one bird hide. In 2020 Bearded Tits nested with 2 pairs which had young had fledged. It is an excellent quiet small RSPB reserve with access up a private road and only accessible by RSPB members and Teesmouth Bird Club members.

Peace and quiet.

We arrived just after 12 on 25/10/20. Greeted by a gentalman at the door giving us all Covid instructions. We had come to use the cafe which you can do for free. Once again a warm greeting by staff everything there at entrance, track and trace and hand sanitizer. Shown to a table with a menu, order taken and our drinks and food arrived nicely presented and tasted lovely. Had a look in the well stocked shop.Great visit with everything that is needed in place. All staff pleasant and welcoming in these strange times.

Great place for a scenic walk and appreciate wildlife
paź 2020 • Pary
We visited late morning on a Wednesday. Good car parking and COVID management. We walked around the lakes on a sunny breezy chilly day. Very scenic views of the area. We watched swans across a lake. The shop is well stocked with reasonable quality material and the staff were friendly and informative. We will return

We loved the Wonderland themed sculptures but didn't see many birds!
wrz 2020
We visited one sunny day in September whilst on our staycation (thanks covid19!) and had a very enjoyable wander around the fields and marshes. We arrived 9.30am and it was very quiet. We were given a warm welcome by staff at the reception, who provided us with a (very useful!) map and lots of good advice to enjoy our day. Entry is £3 each per adult, but parking is free.

Closest to the visitors centre there is lots to see and do. Kids would have great fun in the Discovery Zone area, we enjoyed walking around to have a quick look at everything. We really loved the amazing wooden Wonderland sculptures in this area too - the Mad Hatter tea party is fantastic! There are many other wooden sculptures to discover throughout the park (mole, sheep, frogs etc) but the Wonderland one was really impressive.

We were lucky enough to have this area to ourselves, as we arrived early mid-week around 9.30am. There were several hides and dens to explore too. We then decided to take the largest loop on the map - The Wilderness Trail. Unfortunately this was a bit boring as took us through fields and not really near any lakes, I think the water levels were really low when we visited. Still we did enjoy some lovely views of the reserve and the industrial backdrop. Then we met with the Wildflower Walk and looped back. There is a lot more to see and do on these paths closest to the visitors centre.

I did expect to see more birds! but only ever saw a few flying around in the distance, or floating on the distant ponds. To be honest I probably see more birds on any one of the nature walks we take through the countryside! We did pass several older men with huuuuge binoculars/lenses on cameras as it got later in the morning, so imagine that this is the way to see the birds - sit patiently in one of the dens for extended periods of time with a very good pair of binoculars!

Possibly more aimed at experts/bird enthusiasts, still we very much enjoyed our morning here! We arrived 9.30am and left around 12.30pm. I would look upon it more as a pleasant stroll though, rather than expect to see huge amounts of birds. We did have several up-close encounters with a rabbits though! and also 2 hares!

There is a large children's play area which looks great fun! and a few picnic benches here. There is also a small garden to look around near to the visitors centre. Exit was via the gift shop. Toilets are near reception. Masks are required to be worn inside the visitors centre and also in the hides/dens.

I checked the website prior to our visit and this seems to be one of few places you can visit now-a-days without having to pre-book in advance. We just arrived on the day and bought our tickets at the reception, free parking.

Eco Fair
sty 2020 • Biznesowy
I attended their first Eco Fair and had a very enjoyable day out with my stall. The day was spent chatting to many of the 500ish people who turned up for the fair. A wide variety of stalls selling an abundance of environmentally friendly products and plenty to keep all ages interested and entertained. All staff were extremely welcoming and helpful which made the day most pleasant. I will definitely return.

On the Tees estuary...

Easy to find and plenty of secure parking, free entry as a long standing member of the RSPB.
This is a transformed area, a place for birds to act at one with nature and a place where the human can observe at close quarter the unique behaviour patterns of a variety of bird and wildlife.
A very friendly and informative welcome, excellent visitor centre where we took advantage of a hot breakfast, delicious...
Work is taking place here at present but that did not spoil us from hitting several trails, enjoying the excellent hides, observing birds and gathering information.
A very interesting booklet that accompanies RSPB Saltholme and tells the story of Saltholme, the farming, the Salt works, the wildlife/birds and the second world war, great value priced at £4.95.
A beautiful place to be...
