Half an hour well spent

This little ethnographic collection is very local and quite interesting. The lady who runs it does not speak English or Italian, but was able to help us with questions. The ethnic dress and the rug weaving exhibits caught our interest.

A MUST DO WHEN IN SIGHT MARMATEI!

It is a relatively small but very informative museum. You can find there a lot about the region's folk painting, sculpture and carving, pottery, village life, costumes and tradition.

The museum is small but informative with a nice display of traditional costumes and agricultural implements upstairs. There were only two of us, but the curator was incredibly friendly and took us on a personal tour, so we learned something of the complex history of the region as well as admiring the exhibits. There isn't a great deal to do in Viseu de Sus once you've been on the railway, so I would definitely recommend the museum as worth a visit once you get back from the trip. Entry is 3 lei, which given the level of sevice is quite phenomenally cheap!

Ancient communities

It's a very small museum - it was bigger but a lot was dispersed in the communist period, and so far as possible the collection is now being recreated - but it's worth a visit. The traditional costumes of different ethnic groups in what is still an uniquely rich area (inc. a community of German-speaking 'Zipsers', who arrived here in the middle ages), photographs and historical documents, agricultural implements...

To get there, start from the centre, where the minibuses stop, and walk up the street going towards the station. Very soon, just after a green patch, you see a wide street on the right. The museum's about 150 yards down that street, on your left.
