New Locks
gru 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
After our trip through the canal we took a tour bus back to see the new locks. I enjoyed the ride across the country and was pleasantly surprised by the new information center and our view of the new locks.

Well done!
sty 2018 • Dla rodziny
Our family visited the center while we were in Panama on a holiday. The visitors center is really modern and close to the locks. We had a car and parking was easy and close. We watched a huge container ship being guided into the locks and witnessed its travel through the three levels of the locks until it entered the Caribbean. There was a person who described the process in both English and Spanish. We found his narrative to be very informative. He provided us with all sorts of information that sort of puts the whole process into perspective. We also attended the English video presentation on the construction of the new locks, which was good, but I felt could have been more in depth. We spent a good 3 hours there. We were disappointed to find out that the restaurant was closed when we decided to go for lunch. It was only about 3:00. A warning to some: the transit through the locks is a slow process. I don’t think most young children would appreciate the experience. Fabulous day for my wife and I. Less so for our two daughters.

Loved the visit
sie 2016 • Dla rodziny
This visit was worth it. The viewing platform is very well positioned. They have a small store, a movie theater playing the history of the canal and the new expansion, also a snack bar and a restaurant. My 2 yo son enjoyed everything including the little playground. It cost USD15 per person. Afterwards we drove across the canal locks, another great angle to see and take pictures.

Exciting day testing new lock gates!
lut 2016 • Pary
Arrived to see the first tests of the new lock gates on the post-panamax locks west of the existing Gatun locks. The Caribbean / Atlantic side is still blocked by a land fill which will eventually be removed. Each larger lock changer is clearly visible along with the water saving ponds which will save over 60% of the water from each ship passing through the locks by taking the higher water in the falling lock to storage, in three separate stages - the lower half of the water has to inevitably be flushed out to sea. Nice center with theatre showing two movies, the current expansion movie and the history movie which by the way are the same as being shown at Miraflores visitor center. Some concern over the operation of the locks since mules will no longer be used, being replaced with tugs who will nudge ships in and out of the locks. Quite a vista and quite an operation. Two year behind on completion and huge overrun on original $3.1 billion bid.

Learn about the current Panama Canal Expansion
kwi 2015 • Dla rodziny
We visited the Gatun Lock Expansion Site with our toddler on a day trip from Panama City to the Forts of Portobelo and the Canal Railway. The expansion site is where the larger locks are being built for the ships too large to traverse the current canal. No locks are yet operational here. The facility is brand new and shows videos (in English and Spanish): one about the history of the canal, which is the same as the video shown at Miraflores, and the other about the canal expansion. They are informative and about 15 minutes altogether. The main reason to visit this site is an overlook of the new locks and their progress, and also a great view of Gatun Lake. Presumably when the expansion is finished in 2016, you can see the larger ships cross the locks here as well. There is also a short nature hike, a snack stand, a gift shop, and a playground. As a parent, I can appreciate the nice play area and picnic tables to give kids a break. The bathrooms are new, clean, and have baby changing facilities. Admission is a little pricey at $15 per adult—this is the same admission price as Miraflores which has a much more extensive visitor center. However visiting the expansion site really complements at trip to the current locks at Miraflores or Gatun. I would visit an operational site first, then come to the expansion site to learn more about the future of the canal. On our way here we accidentally crossed the Gatun Locks bridge, which crosses right in front of the large lock doors. It ended up being one of the highlights of our trip! Swing by the bridge if you are coming out this way.

Colon Panama
We came at 3:35 pm and were denied access to the visitors center although working hours were until 4:00 pm and when we asked to pay for the tickets just to enter for 5 minutes we were rudely sent away by the staff. At the same time a small private tour bus arived and after a few minutes of arguing the tour was allowed the access to visitors center, and we and a few other visitors that arived by private transportation were sent away. All in all we won't be returning again or recommend anybody to visit Panama canal expansion center, instead if you're intrested in an awesome view I recommend San Lorenzo fort it's about 35 minutes drive from Colon, park staff is incredibly welcoming and ready to provide you with any information or help you require.

Nice addition to a visit if you're going to the Atlantic coast
gru 2013 • Dla rodziny
I went to the Panama Canal Expansion Observation Center with my family and a friend from France, and while the visit itself was nice, I think it wasn't as interesting as visiting the current, working locks in either Miraflores or Gatun. It's quite small, you don't get to see the marvelous operation of the locks, or the ships transiting through them. It's still interesting to learn about the whole expansion project and how it's supposed to benefit global commerce and the country of Panama. Helpful staff make bilingual announcements with interesting tidbits about the expansion project continuously. If you're going to the Atlantic coast, either to see the Gatun locks, Portobelo, or San Lorenzo Fort, then a detour to this observation center isn't a bad idea. If you're considering making the trip just to see this, then I recommend to reconsider the thought. It's easily combinable with the other attractions I mentioned, but I'd rather spend time at San Lorenzo and the Gatun locks if I was short on time than do the locks and the expansion observation center, for example.
