Ausevika Petroglyph

The rock images at Ausevika where made by members of a hunter-fisher-gatherer community in the Stone Age, aprox 5000 - 6000 years ago. They give us primarily an insight into the community's beliefs, ideas and rituals, possible along with their myths an legends.

The rock images give us information about how Stone Age people viewed the world and their role in it. What were their opinions? Who produced the rock carvings, and why? What influenced their choice of subject? These are some of the questions which archaeologists and general ask themselves. What did they try to tell with the rockcarrvings?

No matter how we interpret the rock images at Ausevika, they are unique works created by a prehistoric community, where hunting deer, the performance of ritual dances and the use of symbolics have been brought together in different aspects and an entity. Here - on the rocky seashore at Ausevika - people have gathered to celebrate their ritual festivals and ceremonies, to confirm the continued existence of their life and culture. Maybe they also used this place as an cult place for special cermonies.

Definatly worth a visit. It is amazing to see it with your own eyes.

This place makes you wonder while you wander around. Worth visit, a remote, full of stillness (if you're lucky) place by the sea, in a wonderful fjord-region.

We were thrilled to 'stumble' across this site (on 15th June 2018) when looking for a campsite in the evening. There was no-one else there, which made it even more special. We looked in amazement at the variety and quality of the etchings on the rock surface and tried to imagine the people living there 3000 years ago. The lovely wooden walkway makes it easy to see them all whilst maintaining the integrity of the site which is in beautiful surroundings and there are many excellent information boards. It was a moving experience. (BTW - I've tried to upload some photos several times, but it isn't working, which is a shame.....)

Far away but worth it you can see stone/rock carvings close up and try to imagine how it was a couple of thousand years ago :)
