Worth a visit but don’t let the word get out.

So beautiful. Went with three kids and they had a blast. Beautiful water for swimming, rocks to jump off of in a serene setting. There were plenty of people here but we walked a tiny bit upriver and were all alone. Scenic little cut in the valley with a scary road to navigate. I was here with a local who dropped us off and picked us up. I imagine the driving/parking situation would be difficult for out-of-towners to negotiate.

Too many cars. Totally ruins it.

It's a pretty place but totally ruined by the car drivers. No effort is made to limit the number of cars or their speed so you have to walk 1km without pavement on a narrow road with cars tearing past. Walking along with a four year old kid, one idiot whacked me on the side with his wing mirror, then started yelling at at us/them for daring to be in the road (his license plate was DX-655-XD). There are plenty of nicer places to visit in the area. Avoid.

Stunning hike along the river
maj 2018 • Pary
What a beautiful hike with an interesting history. A stroll along this ancient path next to the river is the perfect way to digest all of the great food from the basque country.

Hidden treasure near Itxassou.

A really worthwhile detour that is on narrow road parallel to a wild torrent if rains have prevaiIed or in Spring after snows have melted! Beware of oncoming traffic although happily coaches are not permitted. Countryside is magical and bird life a treat. The route can be covered in chestnuts at certain times of year! The legend of Roland comes to life here and it complements the medieval tale.

Nice spot

After nice lunch at Itxassou, we did small walk to Pas de Roland. The road is narrow but so romantic and quiet along the river.

Beautiful Walk
cze 2016 • Pary
We parked our car at the end of the Pas and wandered along the river to see the actual Pas de Roland. We visited in the morning when the sunlight played on the water, and the birds were singing to add atmosphere to the walk. I would definitely recommend a visit to everyone staying in the area.

A road not for the faint-hearted
cze 2015 • Znajomi
So perhaps best if you walk in. The gorge is lovely; the Step of Roland unexpected; the village beautiful. It was pouring rain the day we went, so we drove, "we" being two French, two Americans, and thank heavens, the French were driving! But it's a great out of the way unexpected thing, away from the madding tourist crowds!

A sensational gorge in the mountains
lut 2015 • Znajomi
We found this place by accident -- or rather followed the signs. I am glad we did though I am still scratching my head to work out why it is called the 'Pace' of Roland. It is tremendous site -- the river has carved a mighty gorge in the mountain and on one side there is a small rail track and on the other a tiny road for cars. There are passing places but you might not want to do this on a day when there is a lot of traffic. The view is spectacular and at the end you turn a corner and come into a small remote Basque village which seems to be cut off from Itxassou. You can get a drink or a meal here if the hostelries are open. This is one of the most special places in the Basque country in France.

Basque Country Walks

Very scenic and peaceful. Great for outdoor pursuits enthusiasts. The weather is changeable - when it's hot, it's very hot and when it rains, it's like being in Scotland.
