Go down the 99 steps
kwi 2021
We just returned from visiting St Thomas USVI and if you want to do the steps, start at the top. We took a taxi to Blackbeard's castle ( which is currently closed still, due to the hurricanes of 2017 ) so go down the hill and to your left you will find the stairs to go "DOWN" the 99 steps. Nothing really impressive, you will come across the "first lady's gardens and monument, which is nicely done and a good view to the harbor, and will pass the governors building that is under a remodel , etc. So, start st the top, work your way down to explore downtown Charolette Amalie.

Go for it if you're in town.

If you are already in Charlotte Amalie I recommend stopping to see the steps. There is no information about the steps near the steps. You will need to do your own google search to learn about them. I wouldn't make a special trip to the city just to see them.

Blackbeard's tower was closed unfortunately, but the view and photo ops are fantastic. Amazing sculpture at the top in front of the tower as well!

Beautiful place though. Best thing about the city. City is not with a visit at all unfortunately. It is however very beautiful, just ruined by greed.

Downtown Step-street
lut 2021
We came across this Charlotte Amalie landmark during our exploration of downtown. When we found ourselves at the entrance to the Bunker Hill Hotel and a set of steps, I thought we had found it. There was trash everywhere, and the steps were covered in dirt and mulch. Nevertheless, we made our way to the top and then walked a little further. Then we discovered a much more attractive set of steps flanked by flowers and palm trees, and I realized my mistake. The 99 Steps staircase or ‘step-street’ was built by the Danes to transverse the steep hills of downtown Charlotte Amalie. It was constructed from bricks brought from Denmark as ballast (weight) in the holds of trade ships. 99 Steps is worth a visit for a touch of local history. Just don’t visit for the view alone. While the panorama at the top of Blackbeard’s Hill is pretty, head to the Charlotte Amalie Lookout for one that is more spectacular (but you will need to drive there). Blackbeard’s Castle, located at the top of 99 Steps, is closed for renovation.

Homes? Landscaping? Don’t get it?

So we walked the steps to Blackbeard’s castle. For a must do, I expected more. It is pretty to look up at from the street below, but the castle is closed during the pandemic. So.... didn’t even take a pic!

A little over 99 and really underwhelming. The best part was the Three Queen's Monument at the top of the hill immediately in front of Blackbeard's Castle. Questionably worth the trip.

I may have miscounted, but I did not count 99 steps, only 89 or 90. There are a few places where bricks are broken or missing. The steps were built to make it easier for residents to walk downtown from the hills. The steps were built using bricks brought over from Denmark that were used as ballasts to weight the ship. It's a good workout, as long as you watch out for tripping hazards.

I would not call it a must but if you like walking and sightseeing this area of St Thomas has quite a few points of interest along the way; starting from Fort Christian, you can then go up using 99 Steps to arrive at to at Hotel 1829 and Blackbeard's Castle (unfortunately closed during our June 2020 post COVID trip) where you will also bump into Three Queens Statue.

(the yellow steps in front of the Hotel 1829 aren't the 99 steps - so don't get disappointed at first, like we did hehe)

It's a very safe area with many governmental buildings, some buildings are renovated in the area to still preserve that colonial vibe - probably the best well preserved "old Caribbean town" I have seen in our many trips to this amazing part of the world.

TIP: there is a paid parking right by the Fort, in front of the police department where you can start the walk up or continue along to shore to check other stuff as well
