A very helpful owner

We walked to this small museum from the cruise port. Some signs have been removed so have a good map to find it. We were the only people there so the owner took a lot of time answering our questions. He even helped us identify a tree we had seen in Bonaire on an earlier trip. The history of the house is interesting. It appears that he is continually adding to the exhibits.

The owner is a super nice guy who talked to us and shared the history of the island for the entire time we were there. He has tons of local knowledge and is really passionate about what he is doing.

Thanks for your visit and review! I love to talk about the island and its history, I hope I didn't talk too much, that sometimes happens when visitors are interested in a lot of things :). Hopefully next time you visit the island and the museum I have some more fossils on display, there are a lot of parts of Bonaire that I still need to explore and I just saw that they did find fossilized crabs over here!

A lovely museum with artifacts curated and stories narrated by a deeply passionate and knowledgeable owner.

The best part about the museum is the owner - Arjen. He bonds the various aspects of the museum and Bonaire into a beautiful blended story. His encyclopedic mind is filled with curious stories of the local environment, archeology, people, history, policies, everyday life, even animals and biodiversity. And because archeology and history are integrated in his knowledge - we learnt about evidence-based and honest stories of what is known/not known from Indigenous, Spaniards to the Dutch. It’s a beautiful perspective because, now a local, Arjen moved from Holland here..so we really appreciated the angles he took. He in fact took it over from the government and is doing his very best to make it a more special place each day. His passion and efforts are vivid. It is a free museum so will be thoughtful to leave some donation in the box. We are so glad we went there. Thank you Arjen.

Hello Novi, thanks for your visit! As you have noticed I love Bonaire and to talk with visitors like you guys makes my day! It was so nice that you are interested in a lot of different aspects of life, not only the history but also the current events. And that while being used to really busy cities, you can also enjoy the quiet island life! I hope you have a great trip and hopefully one day come back with more time to discover other interesting things of the island, like the National Park with our huge mountains (ok.. the highest is 241 meter), the underwater life and the spots that once were inhabited by our predecessors on the island! Thanks again, Arjen

Worth a quick stop

The museum is free and provides a good history of the island and its people and customs. Only a few of the displays have information in English, but they are working to upgrade the displays.

Beautifull place

Really recommend to take a look at this beautifull old typical bonaire building. The owner bought it especially to preserve and maintain it for historical preservation. Very nice to see how enthusiastic he is about the history of the island. Good place to see more of the history and talk with the owner about Bonaire. Free entrance but you can leave a donation!

An up and coming museum with some interesting angles
lut 2019
We stopped in the museum hoping to learn more about Bonaire, and we did. The museum was created a few years ago, in an historic Bonaire residence. The founder / curator / guide has an interesting eye for things. Our favorites were the large wooden relief map of the island, the cactus-handling tools (two sticks, one with a v-shaped crook) for making the ubiquitous cactus fences, the story about the attempt in 1986? by some Dutch sailors to sail from Holland to Curacao (they made it as far as Bonaire) and the "things found on the beach", which included some plastics tops (the spinning kind) and some plastic sand molds for making things on the beach. The Dutch sailing thing is sort of a Kon Tiki for the 1980s. The thoughts it brings are worth the effort of reading the signage.

What this is not is a full-on, funded museum with lots of signage, tying it all together. It is instead a collection of things the (Dutch) founder finds interesting, It is cool in its own way. And it is free, though you should for sure put some dollars in the box by the door. And walking distance (more or less) from downtown Kralendijk. Give it a look.

Hello Mark, thanks for your visit and your review! Good to hear that you like it and that you mention the cactus-handling tools, I just made some photos of a characteristic cactus fence that will accompany a little explanation about the tools. More and more interesting things are coming in so there are more stories next time you'll take a visit as well as some more information with all the things on display. Arjen.

Really nice little museum covering a lot of info about Bonaire.

Right at the entrance to the Washington - Slagbaai National Park the museum is free. It is small but includes information on the history, geology, and other topics about Bonaire. Worth a visit before traveling through the national park.
