A stroll on front street is a must. All the great restaurants and shops are there. The view is amazing. The ferries and bus stops are near by. There are public restrooms available. Great street art for awesome pictures. Tourist information center.

We have been to Hamilton many times over the years. This city has gone down hill. Front St once a charming and quaint area, is now over run with homeless. There were a few small British department stores, now all permanently closed. High end boutiques including Louis Vuitton all gone. Many restaurants also closed and shops vacant.

Great location to spend part of the day when visiting Hamilton. Colorful buildings and shops, huge variety, most workers were pleasant and not pushy, good views, and plenty of places to stop and eat. Downside, not enough places to stop and sit outside to take a break, and prices are on the high side but expected.

We stayed nearby on Pitts Bay Road and we loved our strolls to Front Street. So many quaint shops and restaurants and you can "feel" the history. Make sure to venture down the slightly hidden alleyways. There are plenty of benches and picnic tables for resting by the water. Great views!

Visited in July 2005 for 2 weeks. We covered all the shops and a couple of restaurants on front street, our hotel was at one end. It wasn't exactly what we expected. The shopping is way over rated. The famous Trimminghams is out of business as of July 27, they were having there big closeout sale while we were there. A lot of stores selling expensive porcelain figurines, dinner services and various fragile ornaments and glassware. The prices are the same or more than in Canada so I assume the USA as well. I didn't see the point trying to carry any of this stuff back home in one piece and risking getting nailed for tax by customs. Lots of jewlery stores also. The expensive watch my wife bought me in Canada was exactly the same price when the exchange and canadian sales taxes were factored in. Rolex also appears to be the same price as in the USA. A lot of souvenir shops selling the usual cruise-ship-port style of made in china junk. It seemed like everything we picked up was made in china! U$6 for a mug, $4 for a fridge magnet etc. I wanted a nice Bermuda t-shirt or golf shirt but couldn't find one, piles of tacky tourist $9.95 poor quailty T-shirts are every where. We wanted a nice bright picture of bermuda with palm trees in it, but we couldn't find one, all the stores sell the same washed out water colors mostly by the same artist but even other artists work looked the same, I can't explain that, you have to see it. If you like the pastel water color look you are in luck, most unframed prints are $10-20. I watched a guy inquiring about buying a framed picture and having it shipped to the USA, the clerk said foget it, its to expensive and to much trouble to pack it! My wife wanted some Nike sandals that were U$50, but they only had 2 sizes in stock, this happened at 5 stores with several different styles of shoes. A good thing, she came home yesterday with the exact same pair she wanted for $42 Canadian dollars! We went to the much touted Irish linen shop. We had intended to buy new bedding after reading about it on line and in a magazine. When we walked in the staff were arguing about something petty and didn't stop due to us. The inventory was patchy and limited, only a couple of pieces of some styles and sizes etc. The merchanise is not displayed well either, boxes piled on the floor etc. If you are going to shell out U$580 for 2 bed sheets (I kid you not) the shopping experience had better be in order, we left without buying. We ate at the Onion pub/restaurant which was packed and a "happening place" particulary when the cruise ships are in, if you like loud busy pubs with lots of young people. Dinner was good but not worth U$90 for 2 compared to what we can get a home. If you are staying outside the Hamilton city try to visit town when there are no cruise ships, its much more enjoyable walking around with 3000 less people on the street. Note the shops close at 6pm but some stay open later for the ships, they are closed all day Sunday. The infamous "bird cage" is nothing unusual, its usually empty, we only saw uniformed officers in it a couple of times when the ships are in. Don't get me wrong, its well worth a half day or so browsing. Its very clean compared to most cities I've been to and it is very safe. There are no panhandlers or any body bothering you. If you have limited time and have to choose how you spend your day go to the beach for free instead! Luis Vuiton will survive with out you!

Just came back from Bermuda a few days ago and stayed 4 days at The Reefs in Southampton. We wanted to get a feel for Hamilton so we took the bus to Front Street. I was under the impression that there wasn't great shopping but I was willing to find out otherwise. Armed with my Fodor's Bermuda guide, I had already marked the shops to go to. We first went to Boutique CC which was a small little boutique with great sales (apparently the great sales are in the offseason and it was March). There was no sales tax which was a bonus!
Here are the other stores we visited...
Calypso- cute and unique clothing. The largest selection of bathing suits we found. Great shoes and tons of beach hats!
Flying Colors(I believe this was the name, it was on a side street next to the post office and Lemon Tree cafe, near a park) - Bermuda apparell and keychains, cards, tons of t-shirts...touristy apparrel and sweatshirts were about $35.
The English Sport Shop - their own line of sweaters were $35 and a great selection of men's shirts, ties, and women's and men's cashmere and wool sweaters were available
Davidson's of Bermuda - I had higher hopes for this shop but it was just okay. I managed to snag a sweatshirt for $15! The tshirts and sweatshirts were okay but Flying Colours had a better selection of touristy apparell.
Cecile's - largest selection of Lilly Pulitzer and Emilio Pucci by far. Huge sale in the back room with discounts up to 75% off! Bought a pair of pink Lilly Pulitzer flats for 75% off. Great store when there are discounts!
Overall, the shopping on Front Street was much better than I was led to believe. I will definintely return to Hamilton to shop the next time I am in Bermuda!

My wife and I first visited Bermuda in the 1980s as a cruise stop; we were so taken by its beauty and serenity. Everyone was so well dressed, the shopping was excellent and the beaches were superb. We were so impressed that over a decade later when I retired in 1996 we had no hesitation in returning to Bermuda for a stay of 10 days and again we found it idyllic.
However, in December 2005 we crossed the Atlantic on Crystal Serenity, sailing from Lisbon. One of our two stops was to Bermuda and we couldn't wait to see it once again. Imagine our great disappointment when we arrived at Front Street to find both department stores, Triminghams and Smiths, had closed after over 150 years. Seemingly, so we were told, they had gone bankrupt as a result of competition from the Internet that had affected sales to both locals and visiting tourists. The economy has deteriorated and Bermuda has lost its sparkle. Whether that is equally true of its hotels we were unable to discover.
For us our recent experience has shattered an illusion and we are so sorry we returned.

Front Street is your classic main street full of shops and good places to eat. There are a few touristy things as well such as the birdcage in the middle of the street that you can stand in. Almost all of the stores are closed by 5pm. The restaurants have amazing food but are expensive. There is not a big nightlife scene and on a Sunday morning the place feels very quiet and dead. The best time to go is for a Wednesday Night Harbour Night. It is a festival and stores stay open later than normal.

I visited Bermuda in late November and on four of five occasions ended up on Front ST ,lots to see and do numerous places to eat as well ,it felt quite safe and i found as I walked inland a block or two it had a more local feel and lots of strores, books stores a pharmacy shoe stores ect ,which I always enjoy. I wasn`t really there to shop but found myself browsing on a few occasions which was fun There was a men`s shop that had large seasonal racks in the back of the store, the prices are 40-70% off year round I believe it was called A.S. Cooper, and it was very nice clothing.
By the way,any seaside city I visit I always check out the local ferry`s service it`s always the best deal in town, and Hamilton was no exception. The ferry terminal is centrally located on Front St and offers different routes,my friend and I choose a 40 minute trip that made I believe 4-5 stops around the harbor and local islands,It`s a opportunity to see close up some of the lovely homes and area from the water, all for a few dollars. The ferry I was on was well maintained and the captain and crew very nice.
Oh and by the way a couple of blocks down the street toward the marina is a really great market we shopped at `Miles Market`excellent selections and prepared foods for lunches and some delicious deserts .

My friend and I visited Bermuda in April and I must say it was the best vacation! If you are thinking of visiting Bermuda, but are worried about safety travelling alone or just a few women - put your worries to rest.
We traveled all over the island and not once did we feel uncomfortable or unsafe! I kid you not, for I am a nervous traveller.
The people of Bermuda are so friendly and polite and everyone we dealt with from bus drivers, cab drivers, shop keepers, waiters/waitresses were polite and greeted you personally with a good morning and with a smile.
What is amazing we used cabs four times and if you talk with drivers it is like having a personal tour guide! The history and information that they have is amazing. What I really respected is when you get in the cab they ask which rout you want to take and they explain the difference in each - unlike what we are used to were most of the time they take the longest and slowest rout.
The pride of their country is evident with everyone we talked with. People on the streets greet you with good morning and big smiles and the shop keepers do not harass you like other Islands I have visited. There is such a variety of stores in Hamilton from top of the line to very reasonable. We had such fun searching throughout the treasure trove of shops. There is every type of store to see and they have a great deal of local products. One thing I truly enjoyed is they do not pressure you in the stores or follow you around like of tourist destinations I have been to. the area and stores are very clean and are clustered close together. The shop keepers are friendly and believe me they enjoy helping you and answering you questions - know this as I asked many questions and all were answered.
The bus/ferry system are a great way to get around the island and are much more affordable than cabs the times we took cabs the cost was around $30.00. The employees of the busses and ferries will help you get to were you want to go and will answer your questions.
If you are thinking of visiting Bermuda - I can honestly say I would go back in a heartbeat. I hope this review was useful, I hope to get back to Bermuda again soon.

Bermuda is safe. Front Street is hugely safe. I can’t think of any place on the Island that wouldn’t be safe. Go and enjoy.

Hi
My dad in the 50's stayed at a hotel near Front St. which the launching docks were a few yards from the hotel. He and his friend assembled a boat in the penthouse on the tenth floor of this hotel in room number 1009. The hotel manager at the time was Oscar Jakel who gave them a slap on the wrist for that little escapade. Unfortunately I don't have an actual name for the hotel.
Any hotels from that time frame still there? I want to visit and tour the area.
Thanks
Craig

Hello,
The only hotel that I know of that is close to Front street of that height would be the Hamilton Princess which opened in 1885 and has its own marina. We stayed at the hotel twice in the past year and it is a beauty.

We were there in April last year. It was lovely but chilly at night. Layers, bring lots of layers. We swam on the warmer days. The water was so beautiful we could not resist. It was not too cold. There were warmer days and colder days but as the others have mentioned, there is plenty to do on colder days. Look at the weather when you arrive and plan your beach days accordingly. Have a rum swizzle for me!

Light jacket . As it can get cool some days . It's expensive there so I always bring whatever I want to wear instead of buying there. Nice outfit for dinner out and don't forget your bathing suit.
Is the first week of October considered off-season will things be closed?

I've been to Hamilton three times. Hamilton is Bermuda's major city. As far as I can remember, stores, shops, and restaurants are not effected by seasonal changes, because people live there year round. Only hurricanes will cause businesses to close their doors.

I am going to Bermuda end of September, from your post I am guessing Harbor Night will still be a happening the last week of September, some posts mentioned it was only summer. Do you have any idea how late the ferry runs to the dockyard cruiseport on Wednesday night?

I think the Harbour nights schedule shows that they end 31st August though this is still to be confirmed. So you may be out of luck.

I've read several reviews about "rum cakes", and many stated they took them home. How do you get them back on the ship? I thought you aren't allowed to take food on board from the islands.

I make and sell a Bacardi rum cake myself in all my retail shops here in Bermuda. Made to my recipe. The cakes are the only Bacardi rum cake available for sale on the Island. It comes in its own sealed individual 4oz bake in pan. It is coded and is allowed for travel to the USA and other countries if not opened. It is then boxed in tissue with an outer cardboard box. 6 different flavours are available Enjoy! I also sell a 1 1/2lb cake in tin.
