Wife stayed at visitor center, no problem in 2nd-3rd gear, no need to do it again

Wife scared of heights and hairpins so she stayed in visitor center, I had to do this, not a big deal. 5 miles each way at 20-25 mph. Not much to see at bottom of not a fisherman. Canyon is gorgeous ! Colorado National monument absolutely gorgeous, totally different than B Canyon

Try it!

We did not hesitate to drive the rent car down this road to the bottom of the canyon. It is a steep grade but it's not that bad. When you arrive at the bottom, you see the Gunnison River and a picnic area. We drove along the river for quite ways looking for the perfect place to stop for lunch. The river had some rapids here and there and just a different view of the canyon walls above.

Do It!

Steep grade and curvy road make this quite an adventure. The scenery is magnificent as you drive down the canyon to the river. Interesting to see the dams on the river. Just beautiful and worth the time to explore.

Vehicles longer than 22ft prohibited

Due to the steepness of this road and the hairpin curves vehicles over 22 ft in length are prohibited.

Steep Road to the bottom but worth it!

Great way to see the Gunnison River up close and personal! The mountains are up close and the gravel road down is narrow and winding!

Steep drive but worth it!

We drove our GMC diesel pick up truck on this road and had no issues. It really isn't scary. At the bottom is the river with a park area and restrooms. We took our dogs for a walk and checked out the river.

What a great experience, right near to the river these tree covered sites were perfect. Although quarters can get tight on a busy Saturday evening, the trees made it cozy. We saw a deer in the site, bear on the grounds and chipmunks of plenty.

Worth a ride, but not the reason to go!

This is worth a quick drive, however, I was hoping for a better trail at the base. Camping is here, and there are some picnic tables, but that is kind of it. You are so spoiled from the amazing experience of the south rim drive, that this seems a little anti-climatic. The trail is past the campers, and it feels that they could have done more. You are at the based and can look up and see the great walls of the canyon and see the rushing river, but it would be nice to be able to walk along it for a period of time. The trail that is there is very iffy, and comes in and out - just when you get into it, it is over. That said, it is still beautiful, and the trip down is worth the drive itself, as it is a steep winding road.

Road to the River
maj 2019
The sign is accurate...steep and sharp curves but take the trip. There is little more to say that this place is just incredibly beautiful...quiet and most relaxing. When you get to the bottom you just wonder how this river created this enormous canyon...a feeling you do not get from look top to bottom. Great place to look directly down and up the canyon walls. Plenty of space to wonder around and enjoy the canyons beauty.

Worth a trip down if you have time

All the viewpoints on the South Rim are very easily accessed from the road and a short walk. You access the East Portal Road just beyond the visitor checkpoint. It’s going to take over an hour to drive down and back up the steep, windy 16% grade road so it’s a major time commitment. Some very good views. We were told that morning down at the river is a good spot to see bears but we weren’t so lucky. We met someone at the Visitor Center who had seen a couple bears that morning. Picnic spot. This is also the point where the water is diverted in to the tunnel but you can’t see anything other than a marker.
