    Teshima Art Museum and Surroundings
We took the fast ferry from Port Uno to Karato Port, Teshima Island, to see the museum. There is a local bus but we chose to walk instead and wound our way uphill to the museum which sits amidst some tea terraces overlooking the beautiful island and bay below. You must have reservations for the timed entrances so plan ahead and obtain it before venturing out this far. The museum is a huge oval concrete floor with a concrete ceiling in the shape of a drop of water which is open to the sky to two places. In dozens of locations along the concrete floor of the museum, water bubbles up through tubes to create little rivulets of water that join with others to create mini-lakes at the low points. It is captivating as the rivers appear, spread out and shrink back. We had a nice snack at the gift shop then hiked up to the Forest of Murmmers (excellent) then had lunch at the Shima Kitchen, which was itself an art piece as well as serving amazing food. This is a beautiful island so take the time to walk or bike above the museum to enjoy it.

    Don't miss this unique experience
I loved this museum. The rivulets of water running along the floor and the pools caught by the light were mesmerising. People were transfixed by it. A simple concept but so involving. This is a must see on Teshima. I was glad you couldn't take photos inside as it would have ruined the atmosphere.

Overturning the image of museums. I like there feeling like I’ve completely forgotten how time passes, and feeling like I’m in another world!

美術館のイメージを良い意味で覆す空間。時が経つのをすっかり忘れてしまいそうです。
決して希望大きいわけではありませんが、このような空間に身を置くと別世界にいるような感覚になります。

This is as hard to describe as it is extraordinary. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Japan. Relaxing, intriguing, fascinating, engrossing, unique. And very Zen and Japanese. Highly recommended.

If you love modern art and architecture, Teshima Museum is a must-see on your trip to the art islands of Japan’s Seto Inland Sea.

It is not a museum in the traditional sense; it is a stunning piece of architecture housing a watery art work.

But it needs careful planning for a smooth day out. You must book Teshima Museum online and book ahead for a time slot that matches up with the ferry times and the bus from the ferry port.

If your ferry boat arrives at Ieura Port, you need to take the bus or hire a bike to get to the museum. If your ferry arrives at Karato Port, it is a 25 minute walk uphill or take the bus.

The buses tend to meet the ferries. But get in the bus queue - the buses are not big and locals have priority to ride over tourists.

You pay for the bus when you get off - 200 yen - you can use IC (Suica, Pasmo) payment cards or cash. Exact money only.

And don’t think you can solve these transport issues by taking a taxi. There is only one taxi on Teshima.

Hiring bikes to get around the island? Book ahead. Bike rental and luggage storage lockers are at Ieura port. Some electric bikes are available.

When you reach the Museum, there are no cafes or even a drinks machine nearby so make sure you have something with you, as you will be waiting outside the Museum until your booked time slot.

There is a cafe on site but you are not permitted to enter it until your ticketed time. This rule is sternly enforced.

No shoes, no photos and no talking inside the museum.

I can see the appeal of this place (my friend absolutely loved it) but there were too many rules, too stringently enforced to allow me to relax and enjoy the experience.

We arrived in the afternoon around 130 on the ferry from Inujima so we didn’t have a lot of time. We rented electric bicycles for ¥1000/4 hours and quickly biked to the Teshima Art Museum. The bike ride was mostly uphill and took about 20 min. It was a last minute decision to visit Teshima and we had reserved the tickets only the night before for 230. Usually it would be recommended to reserve them further ahead but with Covid, it was a lot easier.

You have to take your shoes off before entering the museum. It’s very beautiful, simple and mesmerizing. You can stay as long as you like watching the puddles of water in motion.

There are small tables outside that you can sit by to look at the tube terraces. We were there after the harvest so it was not as breathtaking as it would have been with the fields flooded. Would definitely like to visit in September.

I could not visit Teshima Art Musuem because I could not take boat to Teshima Island from Naoshima Island. The boat crew protect me taking a boat. They said the seat is already full. Only 3 small boats a day and no seat reservation system. Therefore, I can not know if I can take a boat or not until last time. I claimed this problem to boat Company and Tour Office if they have any plan to fix this problem. But they did not care at all. They consider it as just visitor's personal luck.

You have to go there.
Calling it a museum is irony- it is an installation, rather, the most minimalistic and fascinating space you will ever experience.
