New road; great vistas
mar 2021 • Pary
We drove out to the lighthouse in the last week in March 2021 and the road is brand new with white lines painted on the edges and yellow markers in the middle; it’s brand new and clearly built for foggy and low visibility weather.

The road out to Tomales point however is old, narrow with lots of potholes so I would imagine they’ll probably fix that road next. If you drive out that way first you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the new road out to the lighthouse.

We intentionally went to Point Reyes to avoid spring break crowds and summer crowds. The parking lot at the lighthouse is very small with maybe only 30 parking spots. The parking lot near the elephant seals and the chimney rock trail is also quite small. I’m not sure how this area would handle crowds because even in the 3rd week of March the parking lots were about 75% full.

I would highly suggest going in the spring when there are less people and it’s green and to see spring flowers and wildlife. We saw elk, deer and a coyote. We also saw a huge number of birds and several birds of prey.

The drive out is long but is well worth it. Because of Covid the lighthouse itself is closed and the visitor center at the lighthouse is also closed but it’s still well worth the visit to see the beaches, lighthouse as well as being able to see whales off of the point and huge numbers of birds.

I looked through the windows of the visitor center and there are nice areas to sit and watch the beach and views without the crazy wind that is always present at this point. You can see by the photos that the trees are continuously hammered by the wind.

Road to the Lighthouse was closed (Dec 2020)
gru 2020
The road of the last 6 miles to the lighthouse was closed and I didn't get to see it or the elephant seal overlook. There is no set reopening date yet and online it said "closed until further notice" so I recommend checking online for updates before you go. It was disappointing especially since it was a clear sunny day though I ended up stopping by one of the beaches nearby instead. The scenery was nice though I accidently walked by a sleeping elephant seal (that I didn't notice at first which was 12ft away from me) and a rude park ranger started screaming at me across the beach and causing a scene. She also was screaming at other people on the beach earlier when I arrived, I felt uncomfortable after that incident and ended up leaving the beach right after. I did see some other wildlife (like elk, deer, cows, etc.) on the way back and got some photos which made the trip somewhat worth it. I would like to revisit Point Reyes again when the road to the Lighthouse is reopened or maybe one of the other beaches there (which hopefully won't have such rude people). The scenery and the animals were nice though .

This place has absolutely stunning views. The drive to the Point Reyes Lighthouse from San Francisco was not bad, maybe 1.5 hrs. The road was very curvy but also beautiful. The Lighthouse itself was amazing. You have to transcend 318 stairs to get there but the views are worth it and this lighthouse is the only one in nation that still has the original lens installed and working. The Guide there was very knowledgeable and friendly. Take water and snacks in the car if you have children.

Foggy and Windy
lip 2019
This visit was over the 4th of July weekend. When going there, the Lighthouse area was under construction, so we were not able to go that far. The views around it were commanding!!!! This particular day was foggy and very windy (perhaps carry windbreakers or the like as backup).

Loved this park!!! Total surprise!!! Went to possibly see whales, didn’t see them but saw herds of deer and elk. Saw coyotes, hawks, and of course many elephant seals! I would definitely go back!

At the edge of the world
gru 2019 • Dla rodziny
I didn’t know what we were heading for. It was thanksgiving and the weather was cold and windy. We drove for 20 miles in roads where no one was there and no signal either. Then we came to the cliff and there it was; the strong winds that could pull you off the ground, the tilting trees, a fox and two dears, and the red lighthouse far down the cliff.. mystical and majestic...
Protruding 13 miles into the Pacific Ocean, point Reyes (puntas di los Reyes) is truly the edge of the world!

This site is popular for the views of the coast and the wildlife you may see such as elks deer and coyotes.
On the other hand it is poorly organized with a woefully inadequate parking space not to mention restrooms.
The lighthouse itself is at sea level accessible only by a steep staircase about thirty stories tall..

Complete! The lighthouse hours of operation are from 10:00 - 4:30 fridays thru Monday. If you are into light houses this place is not to be missed. There are a few points to consider before you visit. Dress warmly and in layers. It can get chilly and foggy in the mornings, so dress in layers. Also if the wind exceeds 40 mph they will close the stairs going down to the light house. They close the stairs a little early, around 4 pm, so be sure to allow yourself enough time to descend the 300 or so steps that lead to the light house. The parking situation can be a bit grim, so I advise you show up early to avoid problems. The parking lot gets full fast! Also dogs are only allowed at the main parking lot, not at the lighthouse itself. If you plan on having lunch I recommend bringing food as there are no restaurants out there. The drive from Pt Reyes Station is about 20 miles with no gas stations in between so please make sure you have enough fuel in your vehicle to make it.

Beautifully Restored
lis 2019 • Dla rodziny
Beautifully restored lighthouse. It was a very foggy day when we went, we captured some gorgeous pictures. The fog sounds off. My 3 year old grandson enjoyed hearing it. Over three hundred stairs to climb up. Great exercise!. The park ranger was very informative and very accommodating to those that had small children. So much history. Thank you Point Reyes
