Beautiful panoramic road in the Alps!
sie 2020
The Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse is one of the most beautiful and popular panoramic roads in the Alps! The toll road is 22.3 km long and runs from Partenen in the Montafon (1,051 m) to the 2,032 m-high Bielerhöhe as far as Galtür (1,584 m) in the Paznauntal over 34 hairpin bends.

While the weather was not in our favour we thoroughly enjoyed our drive and stopped at the Silvretta Reservoir to stretch our legs. There is a restaurant and souvenir shop right by the reservoir before we made our way down towards Galtur, a noisy journey down since we were surrounded by cows!

What a ride
lip 2020 • Pary
The High Alpine Road leading up to the water reservoirs is an engineering feat. Countless curves („Kehren“) lead up to a magnificent scenery all the way up to the Bieler Höhe. Although you need to pay for a Day Pass, it is worth the ride to a spectacular area.

Out of this world snow safari

If you want an white nature experience you will never forget go for a winter daytrip to the Silvretta reservoir. It’s organised in a perfect way: take the Vermuntbahn lift from Partenen, at the mountain station Mercedes mini buses are ready for you: you can take luggage and skis with you. You don’t believe what you see: the bus is bringing you through the mountain in private tunnels, only as broad as the bus and forbidden to pedestrians, to the white and silent world of Piz Buin and the Silvretta Reservoir. There is one ski lift with three easy ski runs and a well prepared walking path in the snow: see my pictures

Gold Feelings

Here we come and then we were on the road driving towards Gashurn, eventually reaching the toll station. 15 Euros it costs for the day, which i think is a little too much. Drive was great and the views get clear as you continue driving towards the second dam-Silvretta-Stausee. Drive after crossing the second dam is much better as the area is wide open, so we continued driving towards the Kops-Stausee. It is a lovely section of the road with stunning views and the Kopssee area is just wow, we loved it. While returning from Kopssee (guess it was somewhere between 5-6 p.m) we reallized that the barriers at both toll stations (near Wirl and Gashurn) were open for the traffic and the counters were closed, so there was no checking. It seems after this time you can drive the road for free that in summer (even after 6 p.m) is a great option.

Zig-zag up the mountain

Very good road and it should be considering you pay a toll to tackle the many hairpin curves until you reach Lake Silvretta. Lovely scenery and few scares as buses and lorries charge at you.

A bit Away From The Crowds and Rush

We found this pass to be one of the quieter passes in Austria. It did feel far out the way, but we did enjoy the peace and quiet that it offers. It felt like a road less traveled by the hoards of tourists in Austria. The toll was E15. The website mentions that one should expect construction on the road. We encountered this, including an abnormal load vehicle.

A beautiful way of getting from one valley to the other
lip 2017 • Dla rodziny
This road is free with the Silvretta card, but even without it doesn't cost much. It travels up to a beautiful dam with a view of a glacier. On the other end, there is a lovely small town with perfect picnic spots. But make sure that you come with a car powerful enough to climb back up after the descent!

Worth the few euros admission price to drive on this ribbon of asphalt. 34 hairpin turns on the way up, and up, and up! Then a stunning alpine lake with restaurant to refresh with a beer. Ok, maybe a Radler since you have to drive down.

We travelled up on the bus from Ischgl - buses and toll-entry are all free with the Silvretta pass given to people who stay in the Paznaun valley. We walked all around the Silvretta reservoir which is absolutely stunning. Another day we walked down the valley from there, getting back on the bus at the toll-gate. Both were easy and yet spectacular walks. Choose a clear day when the cloudbase is high enough to reveal the snow-covered high peaks and glaciers.

Fun drive, great views, lakes, dams, and cows
sie 2016 • Dla rodziny
Great views at a number of locations and nice stopping areas to walk in the alpine with the cows.
The drive was fun and probably best done from east to west as the views unfold better in that direction. If going the other way, just look for areas to stop and use them. OK, just stop where there are pull outs or, do as we did and drive half way back to get the view you want - you paid your money so might as well get the view you want!
The restaurant at the top of the pass was nice and we would have much preferred to have eaten our lunch there than in Partenen.
Lots of nice short walks along the upper plateau including a church with cows drinking from a bath tub fountain outside the door.
