Fascinating house and garden
wrz 2019 • Pary
We didn’t know much about Clemenceau before this visit and it turned out to be really interesting. His house/ retirement home he called his “shack” is small but full of fascinating memorabilia. Every window has a sea view. The garden is wild and really impressive. We spent about 40 minutes on the visit and would recommend. The staff are lovely and happy to answer questions

Fascinating

A thoroughly enjoyable insight in the life and achievements of a truly great man and elder statesman. A lovely and peaceful location with the garden (re)-designed by and with the man's close friend Claude Monet. Well worth a wander around.

Small beach summer house

Enjoyable but brief visit to the house and gardens. The house is full of interesting artifacts and there is a good short film from 1920s about the man.

The garden is a very small wild garden showing what can be done by cultivation on the dunes.

The nearby beach is beautiful

Fascinating, peaceful and a lovely location

We visited on a Sunday morning and went round the house independently but with a very detailed guide in (excellent)English and then were free to wander round the gardens. The attraction is that Monet helped design the garden but don't expect a mini-Giverny. It is very different, and was very peaceful the day we went, with the sparkling blue sea and blue sky setting off the free, colourful planting in front of the house.

The humility of a great man

Exceptional place, fantastic views over the ocean and great visit of this humble house that has seen so many great men in history staying there.

Disappointing.

It pains me to have to to give this title but after looking forward to our visit to the house and gardens, we were left with this opinion. The gardens, of which much was made in the publicity literature, were in the event particularly disappointing and in urgent need of attention in all respects. It seemed surprising that greater effort had obviously not been made to offer more than a poorly kept and uninteresting wilderness. The house offered more interest and a sense of history and certainly is stunningly positioned with uninterrupted sea views. It was interesting to note that even a number of French visitors seem to feel as we did and left well before the end of the tour. Our disappointment at our trip was finally compounded as we left and passed a near life sizes plastic plastic tiger in the garden which to us, frankly said it all. I am afraid I could not recommend.

Interesting

After a walk around the Gardens, we joined the guided tour of the house. Unfortunately the tour is only in French, however we were able to pick up a few bits of the history, with our limited knowledge of the language and the English leaflet we were given on entry. Interesting that nobody must sit with their back to the ocean!

Interesting place and a great surprise

What a wonderful place to visit. A complete surprise, just saw the sign and followed. At the beach where he lived with the most fabulous view of the ocean. The tour is in French only so only for those who understand but the tour guide kindly let us wander through the rooms to see this lovely house. The garden laid out in front of the Shack is a mass of wild flowers set off by the sky and the sea. In the porch room he explained that here was where George Clemenceau and Claude Monet sat with their drink and cigar and enjoyed the view. Fabulous well worth the visit.

Gardener vs. the dunes? Dunes are winning.
cze 2014 • Pary
Wanted to see this as we were going to see Monet's garden at Giverney, and knew that Clemenceau had corresponded with Monet about his plans for the garden in the dunes. And, as I had both French and European history from school I knew a bit about Clemenceau and found him an interesting character.

The museum and garden were easy to find in the small town, well signed, and there was plenty of shaded parking.

The garden was, I have to admit, a bit of a disappointment. You could see what he was trying to do, but it somehow didn't work, at least in mid June, except for the planting of high grasses that moved in the breeze, changing shape and colour. Maybe we were there at the wrong time for the colour.

The house was fascinating - a time capsule for the early twentieth century. Furniture, paintings, prints, books (a really eclectic library, with books in French, English, and German), carpets, and the entire kitchen were like living history. The view over the garden and down the beach to the sea was stunning - from every window in the house. And, of course, the tiger skin used as a bedspread linked to his nickname.

The guided tour was in French (no surprise, this is France after all) and I could follow about half of the complicated story of Clemenceau's political career. But there was plenty to look at in every room if you lost the thread of the talk.

Well worth the visit, for the house, and to see what a challenge was taken on with the garden - especially if you can follow the guided tour.

Fantastic view

Interesting tour of the cottage, it had a lovely feel. I was disappointed in the garden, it seemed a little neglected (August visit). The views across the garden to the sea were wonderful, well worth a visit just for that. A peaceful spot.
