Unique, historic structure off the beaten path.

Easy to walk around once inside. There appears to be a lift to help get down the stairs but maybe you check first.
The Piscina Mirabilis was one of the largest ancient cisterns with a capacity of (440,000 cu ft). It was supported by vaulted ceilings and a total of 48 pillars.
It was thought to be situated there in order to provide the Roman western imperial fleet with drinking water but this is unlikely, as the Roman fleet did not need the cistern.
The ancient cistern is currently in private hands, but it may be visited by the public by appointment with a small fee.
For comparison the cistern in Istanbul Turkey has a capacity of 2,800,000 cu ft.

A wonderful Roman Civil Architecture Example

Amazing Roman Acqueduct almost intact, definitely worth a visit!
The access can be a little tricky as to gain entry you will have to call the warden that lives down the road in order to open the gate. But once you are in you won't be disappointed, exceptional structure and magic atmosphere.

Had appointment but nobody showed up
kwi 2019 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
I was really keen on seeing this place so I asked the owner of my B&B to make an appointment for me. It was confirmed for the next day at 14:45, I was there at 14:30. I waited until 15:20 but nobody showed up to open. My host called the next morning to complain and they had the guts to say they waited and that there were even other people. The only other people there were the locals passing me in their cars... I was wearing a bright red jacket and was the only one standing around there, impossible to miss. If you don't feel like showing the place don't offer it!

This is the world's biggest antique water reservoir. If you want to give it a try, I suggest you go to Pozzuoli by train (take metro line 2, in Pozzuoli visit the anfitheatre) and take an EAV bus with the direction Monte di Procida. The stop in Pozzuoli is right on your right when you get to the main road after exiting the train station. The bus goes every half an hour and takes 25 min to Bacoli, get off at the junction with Via Roma, then walk up to the Piscina. I would not recommend walking up all the way from Baia (ruins of thermal baths), it's 4km uphill on a busy road without sidewalks. Details to make an appointment here: archoflegrei.it

Strange, echoing and awesome

A giant water storage cistern dating back to Roman times, that feels more like a cathedral. It's a huge, intriguing, cool space hidden away in the hill. Great pillars of stone, textured with the minerals from the water that was stored here, support a vast roof. The space isn't completely dark - there are holes in the roof where buckets were lowered down into the water, apparently, and roots hang down into the void below. We had a guide to tell us about the space - without it there's not much interpretation. The stairs into the chamber are very steep, but I wouldn't have wanted to miss this fascinating window onto the past.

Hard to find and closed
sie 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Very hard to find and when I finally got there it was closed.
The same goes for nearby Cento Camerelle (a local told me it was also closed)

Save your time and visit "Parco Archeologico delle Terme di Baia" - which is outstanding.

A Cathedral for a Cistern
mar 2018
We had the place to ourselves as we had organised a private tour of the area west of Naples around Bacoli / Misenum that day. There was a bit of organising as a lady has to come and open it up especially for a visit. It does not have regular opening hours. We enjoyed getting into an amazingly well preserved freshwater cistern dating from Emperor Augustus's time.

No response to the request for a visit
maj 2018 • Pary
We wanted to see it, two weeks before coming we wrote an e-mail to the person in charge of it - no reaction, no response.
We could not say exactly the time of our coming there before, so when we were then on the requested day in Bacoli, we tried to call the given phone number. Nobody was accessible on phone. After 20-30 min of trying to reach someone on phone we left the place very disappointed.

Don't miss it!

Don't skip this site. It won't take long to tour, but the experience walking into an ancient former underground water reservoir is extraordinary. It's a little tricky to find, but press on and leave a few euros as a donation.

Quite a walk uphill to get to this amazing old water reservoir. Entrance is free but you are welcome to leave a tip for the people who open the site.
The huge pillars and high roof are so very very impressive. I was once again amazed at the architectural knowledge of the Romans. There were some other tourists but the place is so big that you can wander around undisturbed.
It is maybe easier to get here with somebody who know the area but the adventurous might want to discover it on their own
