Day trip Onsen
kwi 2021 • Dla rodziny
We went to Kinosaki Onsen on 17th. Without any expectation, we had actually a great experience.
Overall we were very happy.

These are their good points.
- Natural Onsen which gives so many benefits to your body
- Mix pool outside, remember to bring your swimwear though.
- Not far from town

A few to improve
- A refurbishment might need to be considered as some needs to fix e.g Toilet door was broken.
- Need to repaint so the place looks fresh & new
- A bigger toilet

Thank you we will def come back.

Authentic feeling
lis 2019
Kinosaki Onsen is a beautiful small village located by the Sea of Japan and a great contrast to the big cities, with its approx 3000 inhabitants. The pace is considerably slower compared to the larger cities. There are few people in the streets, you hear the birds chirping and the carp fish are yawning under the bridge to get food. The city is often referred to as "Japan's hidden gem" (hidden gem) and is known for its 7 natural Onsens (hot springs). In other words this is a relaxing spa destination. Compared with excellent food - I recommend to treat yourself to an overnight stay in this beautiful little village.

Thank you for your response and recommendation. We hope that you enjoyed your stay. Kinosaki may be small in size, but it is a wonderful way for visitors to experience an authentic side of Japan that they may not find elsewhere. For more cozy "hidden gems", we recommend that people also visit Izushi, a castle town only 40 minutes away. There you can find yourself walking the streets of somewhere straight out of the Edo period.

Enchanting onsen town
sty 2020 • Pary
Beautiful town straight out of an anime.
If you are only spending a night here, do come early so that you can visit all the 7 onsens.

Do take note that if you are planning to visit an onsen after you check out of your ryokan, you'll need to pay for entry for each onsen and remember to bring a small towel for drying off. Also do take note of the opening hours and day offs for each onsen.

The street next to the train station leading to the canal has loads of wonderful restaurants and cafes. We had a lovely toast and coffee at Cafe Sorella and a full course crab meal at Okesho.

After Kinosaki Onsen, we decided to detour to Amanohashidate, then take the Tango Aka Matsu tourist train before heading back to Kyoto.

Hi chocolatenails, Thank you very much for your response and helpful advice to other travelers. We're glad to hear that you had a great time in Kinosaki! We see that you decided to do some exploring of Northern Kansai (in Amanohashidate) while visiting the area. If you ever find yourself coming back here, we recommend that you check out some of the nearby areas which also have an enchanting ambience. Izushi, a nearby castle town, is like a little Kyoto -- all the historical atmosphere, but without the crowds. There are also the Kannabe Highlands, where one can explore the outdoors and engage in a myriad of outdoor activities such as the lava flow hike, para-gliding, tree-climbing, and more. Finally, you can find the cozy town of Takeno on the coast of the Japan Sea, which offers plenty of fun activities perfect for summer time. We hope that we see you again some day!

Beautiful onsen town with great ryokan service center
gru 2019 • Pary
All onsen towns in Japan should have a great little service center like the Kinosaki Onsen Ryokan Service Center! You will see it directly across the street slightly on the left, upon exiting the railway station. For 200 yen, they will deliver your luggage to your ryokan. And your ryokan can also send your luggage back here upon your checking out. This means that when you are in Kinosaki onsen town, you don't have to worry about your luggage! They are also very good with information and can speak in English. Highly recommended! Kinosaki onsen, with its beautiful streets and old-style machiya is remarkably stunning both during day and night. Although we tried only three public onsens and the onsens of two ryokans, they all felt the same, with seemingly little variation in the onsen waters in between. This is unlike the onsen experience in other onsen towns like Kurokawa onsen or Beppu.

Hello ChuJoe, Thank you for your lovely review! We are happy that you enjoyed our ryokan service system. Kinosaki Onsen as a town is run much like a singular ryokan, and we all work together to make sure guests and visitors have the best time they possibly can while they stay here. We cannot speak for your experiences at other onsen towns, but Kinosaki Onsen's bath houses all differ with one another in terms of architecture, style, views, and sometimes water temperature. Perhaps you can visit us again some day and experience the other 4 onsen.

so many choice onsen in one place

We spent one night in kinosaki and tried just 2 onsen at the time. I think one night is not enough next time we will visit this place again, very recommended to visit in winter.

Hi wldnkrs, Thank you for the review! While Kinosaki Onsen is a wonderful place to visit for a day trip, we do also recommend staying at least 2 days to get the full experience, try out every onsen, and experience the numerous activities we have to offer here such as the straw craft and literature museums, Mt. Daishi ropeway, onsen eggs, and more. If you enjoyed your time in the winter, we also recommend that you visit again during a different season! Springtime brings gorgeous sakura blossoms, and fall is popular for viewing momiji (the changing autumnal leaves).

Truly a Magical Town - we love it !
gru 2019 • Dla rodziny
We bought Kansai Wide Area JR ticket - 5 Days and travelled from Osaka. It took 3 hrs and it was a comfortable ride without the need for reserved seats. Going back - we also took about 3hrs to KIX airport. It is a must to stay 2 nights to enjoy this town n its 7 onsen.

What is there not to love about this onsen town? It is quaint and lovely! It was especially beautiful at night on the streets.

When we reached the station, there is a guide who checked our hotel booking, gave us a map and showed us the direction to our Ryokan. Most shops and some restaurants closed by 6pm. In the evenings, after sumptuous dinners, all guests would be wearing yukata and visiting different onsens. We visited all onsens except for Gosho-No-Yu which was closed for renovation. Yanagi-Yu is our least favourite. It was tiny!!
Our favourite is Kou-no-Yu which has nice indoor n outdoor baths. This is the furthest from the station. Jizo-Yu and Sato-no-Yu were very pleasant too.

We rented yukata for several hours and took lots of pictures. The 1 n only yukata shop closes on Thursday. Price range from yen 2200 onwards.

There are many shops which sell good quality bags and local souvenirs. We had good strow packages, u may want to have your dinner at 5pm.

Personally I love Kinosaki onsen town and hope to visit again in future.

Dear KLene, Thank you for the lengthy review about Kinosaki. We are glad that you enjoyed your time here! We just wanted to correct some things for future readers. Although some restaurants may close early, many do this for a few hours and then reopen later during the evening. We suggest that visitors check business hours online to know exactly when a particular restaurant will be open. There are also many fun activities at night such as arcades and shooting galleries (shateki). Also, there is more than one yukata shop in town. IROHA has one store near Goshono-yu, and another on the main street by Otanigawa River. You can easily spot it due to the many Ghibli characters on the first floor! We are happy to hear that you wish to visit again in the future. Kinosaki is beautiful all year round, and it is fun to experience it during different seasons.

A great place to visit
gru 2019 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
I visited this venue after seeing it on NHK

I can say it definitely feels like it’s gone back in time. It has at least seven onsens

If you stay in the hotels in the area you get a pass which can visit all 7 for free. The shops offer different things for sale but they can be quite expensive as they are handmade items.

The restaurant is closed at two different times once it will close around 5 pm and the other set opens around 8 pm and closes at 11

They seem to be old time activities to do like shooting corks out of a gun to get prizes

It is Worth coming here especially during night time as it is beautiful and if your hotel allows it as mine wanted, you can wear the traditional Japanese garments to walk around the streets in

The train station is called Kinosaki And if you have the JR pass the trip is mostly going to be free for you via train

Hi Aprime1980, Thank you for leaving your thorough review. A lot of the information that you listed here will be helpful for future visitors! Many people come to Kinosaki during the day but, as you mentioned here, there are a lot of exciting things to do at night as well. Currently, one of our 7 onsen (Goshono-yu) is under construction, but we hope that it will be up and working as soon as it is patched up. We hope that you can come back to Kinosaki Onsen again some day!

Seven public onsen bath in this village
gru 2019 • Pary
We stayed at one of the hotels in Kinosaki and were given a free pass to visit the seven public baths.

We visited Satono-yu, which is the largest public bath in Kinosaki and is located right next to the train station.

There are a few hot tubs in Satonoyu but the one on the roof top is interesting - you could jump from the hot bath to a cold shower, and repeat.

Unfortunately we didn’t have time to try the other public baths. Overall it was a great experience.

Hi michaelt238874Y, Thank you very much for visiting and leaving your review! Satonoyu differs a bit from the other onsen in Kinosaki because of its numerous different qualities. As you mentioned, one can quickly jump between a warm bath and a cold shower. There are also a few sauna rooms, high-pressure jets, and a different interior aesthetic depending on the day. One of the bath-house sides has a Japanese theme, while the other is Western/more European. If you come back to visit, you will likely experience a very different bath. We hope that you come back someday to try out the other public baths as well.

Worth the extra mile for the Onsen Experience!
wrz 2019
If you enjoy onsen, then this place is definitely worth the visit.
It's 2.5 hours from Osaka so yes it's a bit out of the way, but it was good to see the view faded from the talk buildings to the greeneries and villages.
The Pros:
- they have 7 different public onsens to try. That's plenty if you have 2-3 days to spend on this trip.
- One of the onsens is a cave-like onsen, another on the rooftop, there's also an outdoor garden onsen. It was very nice to try these different vibe.
- Satono-Yu also has steam rooms and massage chairs that is super relaxing after each onsen.
- You can and I highly recommend wearing your yukata as everybody else will wear it walking on the streets of kinosaki, it is such an authentic Japanese experience
- Food and Beer and desserts are everywhere.
- They also have a shooting arcade and plenty of japanese games by the streets (if you can spot it)
- Plenty of cute stores and souvenir shops.
- You can go up hiking/ take the cable car up the mountain during the day time or even try the onsen egg at the bottom of the mountain.

The Cons:
- hmm... nothing really. We really enjoyed the place

I highly recommend to get a ryokan stay near the streets of kinosaki as you would be walking around the town a LOT. Love the town, had a really wonderful time here:) Oh, and an extra note, it would be lovelier to visit during the colder/ spring time. But Summer on the other hand will be fun as they will have fireworks if you check on the correct dates. :) Enjoy!

Dear Louisa K., Thank you very much for your thoughtful response! We're so glad to hear that you had a good time in Kinosaki. Your advice and facts about the town and the amenities we offer will come in handy for future guests. If hiking is something that you are interested in, we also recommend the nearby areas of Takeno, Kannabe, and Izushi where there are plenty of fun hikes. This is definitely the region to go if one would like to a see a more traditional side of Japan and fully enjoy what nature has to offer.

What a wonderfully well-run town
maj 2019 • Dla rodziny
We were only there for a night, but were utterly impressed with how they ran this entire town. What we found awesome in this town are:

1) Kinosaki Onsen Ryokan Service Centre
In almost all towns around the world we've been to, they only have tourist information centers, pointing tourists where to go, and most hotels and attractions are run independently. It's the first time I've witnessed this, "Ryokan Service Centre" where all the 80+ ryokan hotels come under this one association, and they provide a shuttle bus to bring you to any of the 80+ ryokans/ hotels in this town! Such a great collaborative effort by the business owners in this town! The service center is right across the street from the train station, so it was easy for us to spot it and ask for help when we first arrived. They also have a locker service right beside, presumably for day-tourists to deposit their luggages while they onsen-hop.

2) Free pass to all onsens in this town for ryokan guests
It was really awesome to check out the different styles of onsens, and entries was entirely fuss-free, we just had to show the free pass lanyard that our ryokan provided for us.

3) Romantic mood at night
It's most romantic when you take an evening stroll, and most tourists are in the beautiful kimonos (or yukatas for those who are still onsen-hopping!) and wooden clogs provided by the ryokans. It truly feels like a travel back in time. The small river in the middle of the town, stone bridges, faintly lit lanterns and the gorgeous (willow?) trees everywhere simply make for the best holiday photos.

4) Wonderful traffic manners
Perhaps because this is a tourist town with many pedestrians, most cars we saw stopped at least two car lengths before any traffic lights and were extremely polite and always giving way to pedestrians.

5) Great amenities
It is a small town, but it was easy to get everything we needed because there were many small and large convenience marts, souvenir shops and restaurants at almost every corner, and even the mini-supermarkets had a great variety of cooked and fresh foods.

From observation, you can tell this is one town that is dedicated to making tourists feel welcomed and relaxed. Good impressions right from the start.

Dear maryyeo, Thank you very much for the detailed and heartfelt review! We are glad that you had a good time and got a lot out of your experience, despite it being a short stay. We’d also like to thank you for all the information about the Ryokan Service Center, ryokan onsen pass system, traffic, and more. This is very valuable to future visitors, and we’re grateful to you for sharing! We would love to have you back one day. When doing a day-trip, besides onsen-hopping there are other fun activities you can do at Kinosaki such as taking our ropeway up Mt. Daishi, visiting Onsenji Temple, the straw craft museum, literature museum, making onsen eggs, and more!
