Drove out here from Fukuoka...
wrz 2019 • Pary
...really just because we had nothing better to do though the UNESCO designation is always a draw and piques my interest. Certainly is a beautiful Japanese temple/shrine complex; the Japanese really have a great eye for infusing natural surroundings with whatever they build. This is a great example of that. I was a bit surprised that I didn't see any informational panels with signs in English given that UNESCO designation. Maybe I missed something. We stopped at the museum but basically just to cool down. Didn't pay the entrance fee and just watched the movie for a few minutes. The visit really didn't last long, and I guess I really didn't learn anything here.

Temples were just ordinary
maj 2018 • Znajomi
Three temples i.e. Hentsugu here and Nakatsugu,Oshima island and Okitsugu,Okinoshima island were recognized as world Heritage. Okitsugu is not open to public but you can visit the other two. Temples themselves were not so extraordinary and I was not so moved by the treasure musuem here was very nice and worth seeing

Huge premises
kwi 2018
Munakata shrine has three different locations of cult: two of them are on islands and this is the only one located in main island Kyushu. Since Okinoshima is put on the list of world cultural heritage, many tourists come here. But without car, it is not easy to visit. There is a public bus from JR Togo station, but it is not often. If you walk from the station, that I did, it took about one hour.

National treasure
kwi 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
This museum displays many national treasures, which are related to Munakata Grand Shrine. The entrance (about $7) is totally worth. Unfortunately it is not allowed to take a picture inside.

A quick stop on our way to Oshima Island
lis 2017 • Dla rodziny
We visited this shrine on a blustery November day. It was an adventure in transportation to get here. We stored our luggage at the Togo station, and the man behind the ticket counter provided us with excellent information regarding bus times to the shrine. There only were one to two buses per hour.

Once we arrived at the shrine bus stop, we were relieved to find an ATM that accepted international cards across the street, near the convenience store. There was a flower exhibition going on that day, on the grounds of the shrine. We also were able to see a wedding ceremony being performed. The leaves of the trees had changed to their lovely fall colors.

It was an interesting stop on the way to the port of Konominato. We didn't spend a lot of time here. It was a quick trip back to Hakata for our return from Togo station.

Beautiful treasure of Munakata!
cze 2016
Although not the easiest to get to using public transportation, it is well worth the effort. It is the premier shrine in the city and is lovely to stroll around. With some work between a train and bus and taxi you can visit it. A rental car or private car is best, however.

My brother in law drove me and my family here...beautiful location, lots of history and a LOT less commercial than Dazaifu. Some nice walks around the location to see some very old sites..

A wonderful shrine
maj 2015 • Dla rodziny
My daughter and I visited the shrine by taxi from the CHISUN hotel, it cost 2000 Yen , about $20 one way. As you enter the shrine there is a pond full of large carp, if you feed them they go into a frenzy , quite a sight. Going through the main entrance there is a shrine in front of you, it is a classic shrine and is beautifully built, A Japanese lady motioned for us to follow her, we headed away from the first shrine and head to the right and followed a path that lead up many steps, at the top of the steps is the MAIN shrine which is a nature shrine comprising of a tree and stones that have been assembled to represent a spiritual attachment to nature. It is a peaceful place and typically Japanese, well worth a visit, the fact it is located amongst beautiful green fields is a bonus. Entry is free.

The chrysanthemum show is nice.
lis 2013 • Dla rodziny
We went there for Shichi-go-san (a festival to pray for the healthy growth of young children) and enjoyed the chrysanthemum show. If you are interested in Japanese flowers, visiting there in this season is highly recommended. Another recommendation is to walk through the road to Takamiya-saijo, the ceremonial place. You can enjoy the mysterious atmosphere and the silence in the forest there.
