This is a nice hotel overall. Our room, as well as the common areas, was clean, comfortable, and attractive. We were in town because my wife was attending a conference, so I has on my own during the day. The hotel is at the end of an area called Central Park, a huge shopping and restaurant development, which starts at Highway 3 and ends basically at this hotel. There are over 200 shops and restaurants here, such as Barnes and Noble, Wal-Mart, Target, Lowes, and many other smaller shops, as well as virtually any type of restaurant you could want. A large Wegmans grocery store is about 150 yards away. So if you are stuck in a hotel all day without a car, you could do a lot worse than this one! The Expo and Conference Center is within sight of the hotel. The only complaints we had, both minor, is that, while the room was clean overall, there are wooden storage shelves in the bathroom recessed into the wall. Those, especially the top one, were caked with a layer of dust. It seemed as though maybe the housekeepers weren't tall enough to reach it, so it went without cleaning for an extended period. The other complaint was the breakfast, but only on one of the two days we were there. The first morning, we had no complaints, as were were able to get sausage and a cheese omelet on the buffet, both of which were reasonably good and filling. However, on the second morning, the only hot option available (other than oatmeal), was mini breakfast pizzas. Therefore, we had nothing to eat the second morning that did not contain bread/carbs (which we don't eat). Not everyone enjoys breakfast buffets which consist of "35 varieties of bread." We liked that there was coffee and tea available 24/7 in the lobby. The free Internet wasn't great, but the speed was acceptable for checking email and light web surfing. The unfortunate reality is that, at most any hotel these days, you have to pay for "premium" wi-fi in order to get really useable speeds. The bed was comfortable, the room was fairly quiet (we heard nothing from the rooms beside or below us, but if someone passed by the room in the hallway talking loudly, you could hear it). A huge plus for us is that the hotel does not allow pets (other than service animals). My wife is allergic and there is nothing more frustrating than having to change rooms (or hotels) because the room is contaminated with animal dander, etc. Therefore, we don't stay at any hotel that allows pets unless we have no other choice. The "no pets" policy also undoubtedly contributes to the overall clean feel and appearance of the entire hotel. The next time we are in the area, we would gladly stay here again. Drive time to the historic downtown/Old Town area of Fredericksburg is about 5-6 minutes. There is only one (overpriced) hotel in the downtown area, so this Hampton Inn (as well as the Homewood Suites and Hilton Garden Inn, both next door) is about as close as you can reasonably get, for all practical purposes. If you are just passing thru, it is also convenient to I-95, as it is probably less than a 2-mile drive from the exit.
