We stayed at Estancia Villa Maria the last few days of our recent trip to Argentina. I'm not sure if it is typical of the pampas, but it was a glorious visit. The main hotel was built in Tudor style during the 1920's (there is another French inspired house on property dating from the late 19th c). The house has been charmingly and whimsically updated, particularly the commons rooms, with stylish wicker and Paraguayan sculptures among the billiard tables and original lovely tile, marble and wood fittings. The house has many lovely terraces, which are surprisingly pleasant even in heat.
Included in your visit are three meals a day, and they were definitely worth it. The chef managed to prepare inventive three course menus with choices at each lunch and dinner, and the breakfasts were substantial and included made to order eggs, bacon, etc. There are many horses on property; you can ride, ride a carriage, or learn polo, as well as play tennis (the court surface is a bit different, looked like astroturf over had-tru but it worked), bike, swim or walk. I believe there is also golf nearby.
We easily segued into the gilded age lifestyle of breakfast, exercise, pool, lunch, siesta, maybe a walk or tennis, drinks, dinner. Wow!
There is wifi (first floor only) and the rooms are not air conditioned, though this did not pose a real problem as the overhead fans are quite powerful and there are good shades to break the sun. Our family suite included two baths, two bedrooms and a commodious lounge; all charmingly done though not chi-chi.
Because of the atmosphere visitors became friendly and we got to know most of the other guests in a holiday atmosphere (but not one that impinged on privacy). And, the location is near to the airport so if your plane is late you can stay there and go directly to the airport--a big plus.
One caution, if you are someone that needs the latest and greatest in contemporary fittings this is probably not your spot. I think it is better for those that appreciate a time gone by in an atmosphere of good food, expansive welcome and charm.
