We decided to stay here as we wanted to go into Newquay for a meal. We booked a double deluxe seaview room for £95 from booking.com. The room directly through the hotel was £130 so we thought we got a bargain!
We parked next to the side of the hotel as we could pay for parking for £5 as an extra. The car park was small and would be difficult to navigate if full.
On entering the hotel I thought wow this is a bargain. The grandeur of the reception area, hallway and stairs was impressive. The staff member of reception was polite and helpful. As we walked to the room using the stairs the impressive start soon faded. The carpets on stairs and in the hallways were dated and warn.
We entered the room and to our delight we had been upgraded form a double room to family room. It was spacey and had a walk out balcony and again initially I was impressed.
From looking around though we did start to discover more kinks in this hotel's armour and the facade began to wear off. The twin sofas in the room stunk of old men. The balcony led on to a uneven roof shared by adjoining rooms. The carpet was not cleaned under furniture. The were multiple small holes in the bathroom where items must have existed in the past. The shower head was fixed to wall really low, I'm 5ft10 and couldn't fit under it. The plaster, paint and any structural wood was in a bad state.
So regarding sleep the 2 beds pushed together for the double bed were not that bad and nor were the bed sheets. Though I didn't realise stag do's staying next door in Bertie's Lodge would pass our door, shouting through the night which had non existent sound proofing (strange position for a family room).
The breakfast was also interesting. I like a full English and I'm not picky when it comes to food. But the breakfast was pretty bad. The bacon was really thick and under or over cooked depending on where you got from on the buffet hotplate. The sausages where cheap and tough, the beans over cooked and splitting. The eggs were OK lol. The staff all seemed as thought they had a hang over or something.
The whole stay just seemed very bizarre. The hotel probably used to be amazing but now its in a time warp, with no maintenance nor improvements, a club plonked next door with stag do's staying next to you.
