I like hotels that are old school. You get a room, give them the cash, they take down your drivers license number, you give them a key deposit and then you get a key. Simple. The rooms are cheap and you are in the center of the action on Edmontons famed South Side. I support hotels like this because there should be more of them. Way too many snotty, overpriced places to sleep in, everywhere else. Sometimes you get a great room here, sometimes not. Depends on the person checking you in. I feel like I am in New Orleans when I stay here. The musicians that play in the bar, stay upstairs in the hotel and you will probably get to chat with them in the hallway or in the stairwells. A friendly bunch usually. I want more hotels like this one. Down to earth and simple.

Room tip: Ask for a bathroom and request a shower or tub. There is a key deposit. No elevator. Stairs only.

My husband purchased a weekend stay at a fundraiser so we decided to use it to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary Aug. 22-24. We stayed in a beautifully renovated room with a king sized bed, flat screen TV, comfy couch and a great view of historic Whyte Avenue. From the moment we checked in until we sadly had to leave we had the best weekend we've experienced in over a decade. We enjoyed the vibrancy of both Blue's on Whyte and Old Strathcona during the Fringe Festival - we kept our window open all night Friday to enjoy the sounds of busking (great street music) and revelers alike. We live 10 blocks south of Whyte so we are very aware of some of the perceived "issues" in the area but this stay-cation was way better than we could have imagined. We have already booked our 21st for next year and recommended it to all of our friends and family who might be looking for an invigorating way to see our community. Friendly staff, great location - much better than the chain hotel that I had to stay in for business two days later and much more reasonable. This will now be our new anniversary tradition and by the way we are two professionals in our mid 40's. Cheers!

Room tip: This is on Whyte Avenue which has a great daytime shopping/eating/pedestrian experience followed by a very active nightlife. If you enjoy all of those things, simply book a very affordable renovated room. If you are not looking for late night activity, stay somewhere else - there are tonnes of great options in Edmonton.

I was greeted by bored and unfriendly staff in a dingy lobby so I wasn't expecting much. When I was walking to my room I was disgusted by how filthy and awful the hallway was. Strong smell of stale smoke and also marijuana smoke. But after traveling for 2 days with no sleep or a shower I was too tired to move on. The room was hot and moldy and the shower did not work!!! I immediately called front desk and complained. After 3 attempts to get maintenance I found out he had just left for the day...out of luck. they refused a different room and refused to refund my money. If there is anything worse than the actual hotel it is their staff. Run away from this place. Spend the extra $20 and go somewhere else.

There are better places to stay (almost any other hotel is a better place to sleep), but the bar in this place (Blues on Whyte) is a must if you are into supporting live music and musicians. Bikers, despite the stereotype, actually make places safer because they do not like petty trouble. I am not familiar enough with the crowds to know specifics but the clientele changes with the days of the week. The jam sessions on Saturday attract the talent and those wanting to hear unrehearsed tunes. I believe Friday night attracts the kids from University wanting cheaper drinks and live music. Ever since they stopped smoking in bars in Edmonton, the air is clearer and you can see the character of the place that has built up over the years. I have been coming here for decades and have not been accosted once. I know people who have stayed here and it is okay if you bring your own bedding and don't touch or feed anything in the room.

Room tip: If you get a room above the bar you do not have to go downstairs to hear the band.

The Hostel International was full, this was unfortunately the closest place available.

Alarm bells started ringing at check-in, but it was getting late and I needed somewhere to crash for the night. The receptionist was gobby and full of her own crap jibes. It certainly wasn't her pleasure to be checking you in and was very unhelpful.

The room was $44 (with a $10 key deposit) for a single bed with a sink and TV. Very dingy, in need of decoration and complete with cigarette burns on the blanket. Overall, pretty dire.

On a plus side, you get free WiFi from the bar attached to the hotel and it is well located.
