Was Okay! Menu has changed so much. No Burger, No Matza ball soup. Steak was good as were the frites. Escargot was small and overpriced for the quality. My Peeve was I ordered a nice glass of Champagne, and it was served in a white...wine glass?? I did not like that. Your champs gets flat very quickly. Speaking of flat. Server was very cool and not engaging. All in all there are better French restaurants in town. Not saying I wont be back when I have events in St Paul. Defiantly will stick to Maison Margeaux when its just French Dinner.More
First time visiting St. Paul, the concierge at our hotel recommended Meritage for a nice date night, he could not have been more right! Absolutely loved this restaurant. We sat at the bar and had the best bartenders. Cocktails were delicious and meal was so...good. I am not a huge pork chop fan, but went off the recommendation of our bartender. The pork chop was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and the flavor combinations were outstanding! Highly recommend Meritage!More
A very nice finer dining experience in downtown Saint Paul. We sat at a table in the bar area where it was reasonably quiet for us to hold a regular volume conversation. We started off with cocktails, and the French onion soup and braised oxtail...strudels – all of which was very good. For dinner, I had the hanger steak, which was flavorful, tender, and generously sized. My wife had the half chicken which she thoroughly enjoyed. We really enjoyed ourselves for this nice evening out. Nice ambience with a slight European flare, and people dressed up somewhat, but not too much. Nice looking bar area with skillful and well-dressed staff. One of the nicest places to eat in downtown Saint Paul. Highly recommend.More
We had a late reservation at 9:00pm. When we got there our table was not ready. Lots of people lingering at their tables after they were done eating unfortunately. We were offered a glass of champagne while we waited. We really appreciated that! Our table...ended up being ready at about 9:20. We started with Billi-Bi Saffron Mussel Soup and the Teeny Tiny Tuna Tartare Tacos. They were a great way to start the night. After that we ordered a half dozen of raw oysters. We took our servers recommendation and they ended up being great!!! For our entrees I had the Magret Duck Breast A L'Orange. My wife had the Moules Frites. Literally no complaints. My duck was cooked perfectly and my wife loved her mussels. And then we finished the night with Creme Brûlée. I recommend every item we had off of this menu. It was just a great night. Thank you Meritage!More
We have eaten at Meritage in the past. I reserved for a birthday dinner in their dining room one month in advance and when we arrived our table was unavailable. No one spoke to us for about 15 minutes after check in, and then only...to suggest that we could eat in the bar instead. We had uncomfortable discussions over the next half hour with the hostess, manager, and waiter, who each came to tell us that our table wasn't ready because the group was lingering. No one apologized during our wait, offered us anything to compensate for the wait or had a kind word of any kind. The only "apology" came from the manager, who (at nearly 45 minutes past our time) was "sorry" and could not comprehend why we wouldn't accept her offer to eat at a bar high top (an option we declined when making the reservation and at least twice during our wait). My only regret is that we wasted 45 minutes of a special night and gave them the benefit of the doubt too many times before leaving..More
We had table reservations for 9:30pm on a Friday night. Weather happened and we were half an hour late - we'd called and let them know and when we got there a table was ready, we were full of apologies and were basically told "dont...worry, please relax and enjoy" And we did. Our server was fantastic. We ordered a drink, were given a nice amount of time to look at the menu and ordered our food and wine. everything came out soon after, the food was delicious, the wine was superb. Christmas decorations were up and the place looked amazing. It was busy. Every table taken. Yet it still had an ambience of having your own privacy with a good mix of feeling like you are in a social friendly place. Highly recommend! So glad we made reservations here :-)More
Food was amazing, we tried the 5 course menu. Highly recommend it. All the guests in the party loved every course. Agree with all the other reviews
My reservation was for 8 PM, I was there at 7:55. Sat at the bar and had some local beer while waiting. Finally got seated at 8:20, ordered a glass of wine, soup and cassoulet. Wine was a measly pour of over-priced French Burgundy, they...brought the soup 15 minutes later. They set the table up with a butter knife for bread while I was seated, but they never delivered the bread. At 9:20 I gave up hope on the cassoulet and asked for the check, and wa la!! miraculously the cassoulet was then ready. They offered to put it in a bag, ...yeah, they actually offered to put it in a bag. The end result was a litany of excuses, $39 for a bowl of just-OK French onion soup and a paltry pour of burgundy you could get a bottle of at the liquor store for maybe $20. And the place is extremely noisy!!!! The only highlight of the evening was unintentionally hearing the hoop-earing doofus at the adjacent table telling his date that the chicken was so good he'd like to rub it all over his body and lick it off (and this was before he'd even tasted it)...if I had to bet, ...the mighty Casey struck out. Too often people are smitten by high prices and menus with fancily named plates and thereby convince themselves that they've just experienced some truly 'fine dining'. This definitely strikes me as one of those places, totally pretentious; good for name dropping amongst the willingly, highly impressionable, not so much for actually enjoying some really great food in a commensurate atmosphere. And don't just take it from me, read the review here "Ratatouille Lives", it's effing crazy, they disparage the food and claim to have seen a rat in the dining room, yet they give it four stars!!More
I went for a walk from my hotel after a long day of meeting and zoom conversations and found their sidewalk seating area. I stopped in for a glass of wine and so happy that I did. Service was prompt, friendly, and informative. The server...brought a wine list but then offered recommendations - a dry, bold rose absolutely fit my desires. I added a small bowl of crab corn risotto - extraordinary. Thanks for a great experience in a relaxing environment.More
We recently dined here to celebrate our anniversary as we have enjoyed previous experiences at Meritage. However, we left a bit disappointed. The food quality wasn't great. I love garlic but the the amount of garlic was way overpowering on my Escargot appetizer. Steak Frites...was too marbled with fat for my liking. This is not an inexpensive restaurant and for the prices being charged, I expect the highest of quality. Many other fine establishments to choose from in town. The grand finale of the night which was somewhat amusing but mostly unnerving was both me and my wife seeing a furry creature scampering across the floor at the end of the evening as the place was thinning out. I know it's an older building but c'mon.More
Recommended by our niece who lives in the area, we snagged the last reservation for the day. When speaking to the hostess, I told her we were from out of town and that we were staying at the St. Paul Hotel a short walk away....When we arrived they had saved us the cute corner table for two in near the street window. Perfect romantic dinner. Foie Gras, seafood tower, oysters, grouper, cheese board. beautiful cocktails and wine. Magnifique!!More
Very busy during the 4th-of-July weekend but we were able to get a table for dinner in the oyster bar. Food is the same as the other rooms (not limited to oysters only). Good French type food, great wine selection and outstanding service. Definitely a...5-star restaurant!!More
Oysters on the half shell in a very nice location. Yes, it's pricey. I've not gotten anything but the oysters.
My complaint centers around the reservation system/policy. Here is my advice; The restaurant has three spaces; bar, terrace (outside), and dining room. The reservation system requires you to specify. I made a reservation in the dining room for my 40th wedding anniversary. The hostess insisted...it was for the bar. It was not. She relented when I offered to get my cell phone and show her the confirming text. What happened to the customer is right? So, if you go here, call the restaurant prior to your arrival to ensure the reservation is what you want. The spaces are not all the same. I have never enjoyed bar seating. Food is very good. Never have had a bad meal here. Best Foie Gras in the region. Brings me back to Toulouse. Cassoulet and the Duck are our two favorites. WE will be back, but, only with a printed copy of the reservation from the web site you are required to use.More
