We just had our diner here and were impressed with the food and the Pin Pei Ab (Peking Duck) and other dishes. However, the service was just weird. We were greated very friendly (the four of us, two adults and two kids) at around 20.45...with a few other groups still eating. But at 21.45 we were offered the bill out of the blue (without asking), without apology mentioning that we could not order anything. Furthermore, at 22.00 lights were turned off and that made us feel very unwelcome...(!). Now as I am working in Amsterdam and having travelled quite a lot I am reasonably used to service sometimes being unfriendly, but this was an outlier. Also having to pay extra for cucumber, sauce and pan cakes (per person) is also weird as this should just be included. Anyway, in sum: good food, weird and unfriendly service. Hope they can do better for other customers as there is a lot of potential in the food.More
Plenty of duck choices, well prepared ,enjoyed a special night.Staff were very helpful, and constantly bringing new forms of duck. Enjoyed immensely
My husband wanted to have Peking duck and we saw the big sign on the building so we thought we would give it a try. We had it before in Beijing but we had ordered too much so we were worried about the portions. The...menu had pictures and prices but there wasn’t a lot of detail about the duck portions. We wanted to order one of the smaller duck dishes but the server recommended a different duck dish. We agreed and did not know what to expect. They brought a whole duck and cut it up in front of us. We ate it with scallions, green onions and sauce wrapped in a Chinese tortilla. We also ordered a beef dish but it was too spicy for us. As we are eating, another dish came made with parts of the duck. After a ceramic container of clear duck soup with slices of cucumber. Aside from the spicy beef dish, everything was delicious but too much for only two people. It cost about 350 yuan with two beers.More
We tried to get into a different restaurant on Saturday night but they were full. Beijing Duck had room for us even though they were very busy. Service was not particularly friendly but very efficient. We enjoyed a delicious tableside carved duck, braised greens, some...dumplings. They brought out a free veggie dish and duck soup to start. We had way too much food. Everything was delicious and we enjoyed local beer with the meal. Very little English was spoken so we pointed to pictures. We had a great night at a very fair price.More
We actually out walking the day before and came across this place. I decided then that I wouldn’t mind trying it out the following night as have been trying duck in the different places in China we go. We order the whole duck, a sweet...and sour pork and a seafood risotto to share between the two of us. The duck was nice however I have had better in my travels. In other restaurants staff have been extremely pleasant and coming up and offering more scallion and sauce. Here you had to pay for the sauce and staff pretty much ran away after taking order. Overall though there was plenty of food for the both of us. Dinner and drink each came to 375 yuan which was pretty reasonable considering we did leave feeling quite full. Not the cheapest meals in China however in comparison to what would spend elsewhere in Australia a decent meal for a good price.More
I've had peking duck in Beijing, Hong Kong and this one in Shanghai. Although, they all raved about in reviews, I didn't particularly find the duck perfect. It was the priciest one out of the three peking duck but I still think NY's Chinatown has...the best peking duck. The worst one was in Toronto...can't even call it duck. But in NYC, it's probably the best because they are fresher? Also, the pancake or the tortilla is the best in NY too, very thin. This restaurant is a little stuffy and the building and the room is outdated. The servers do not speak English and we had to use our sign language for them to understand us. There was a piece of hair in one of our vegetable dishes. Yuck! Almost all the patrons were Chinese but the place filled up quickly after 7. The meal turned out to be pricey.....for Shanghai. Well, I will continue to compare peking ducks when I travel.More
The entrance to the restaurant is certainly low key; a large, bland, office-looking, concrete building which was deserted on the in the main foyer save the lone guard. After confirming we had the right place, a short ride up the small and run down elevator...took us to a gorgeous setting for a 5 star restaurant. Sure, this establishment specializes in Beijing duck (which is not a local delicacy) but it is so much more. All the dishes were well prepared and presented; the vegetables, meats, and soups all excellent. Certain previous reviews have complained of the oily duck; do they realize that duck is inherently oily? The test is the tenderness and flavour of the meat and the crispiness of the skin. At this restaurant, perfection. In fact, the duck was sliced and served by a sous chef at our table. Service was almost impeccable to Chinese standards; efficient and professional and polite yet impersonal and without personality. The one slip was when a server went to clear a dish with one piece left on it, she attempted to tilt the dish to allow the one piece to slide onto another dish. When it failed to do so, I offered to help and moved that one piece myself. She accepted. After leaving, I was quickly reminded that I shouldn't of had to do that and the server should not have accepted as it was considered "beneath me to do servant's work". Now, this is a very minor point and where I come from would have been a non-issue. But I bring this to readers attentions to point out a service flaw and more importantly to acknowledge certain cultural differences. As far as price point is concerned, this is very much on the high end of restaurants and one would expect an almost perfect dining experience. And in my opinion, Traditional Beijing Roast Duck Restaurant achieves its goal. Five stars.More
Went with a girlfriend around 3pm after walking YuYuan Garden nearby. Read about this place earlier and by chance recognized it. The service was very good. Wait staff were pleasant and passable English. No problem ordering. The food was mediocre. Duck skin was greasy and...a little on the soggy side. Condiments seemed plain compared to other restaurants. Girlfriend and I had some stomach issues after eating. Paid 380 rmb for Emperor duck. Probably would not return.More
Firat of all restaurant is very cosy. But non of their employees speaking English. It os strange because half of the customers are foreigners. Beijing duck was nice but no need to order super menu. Foods was delicious but duck was not good as good...as I had at beijing. Still ok. Everything becoming funny when you ask for wet towel after paying the bill. They ask 2 RMB for each wet towel. Really interesting. I will not come here again just because of this attitude.More
Found the restaurant by accident and were fully satisfied. The restaurant looks inside very cosy and we got a table without reservation. The menu was in English and Chinese including pictures. We ordered Beijing duck and various other dishes. All of them were excellent cooked....Staff was friendly and English speaking. It was also possible to pay by credit card /mastercard.More
A big fancy restaurant in mid. Beijing. Four of us in the most famous Duck restaurant in the world. We arrived little late and the stuff where little tired and nervous, but service is service and we got exactly what we expected , a good...sliced brown crispy Peking duck, with pancakes and various of Chinese Sauces. We enjoyed everything and had a big adventure.More
I've been there 4 times - and I always like it. Highly recommended to have a reservation. Can be VERY crowded and getting your table even with a reservation can be a bit unusual. But once you're seated, everything is delightful and special. The Roast...Duck is clearly the top speciality of the house but everything I had there, especially the Chinese vegetables, the soups, the fired noodles, were succulent and delightful. Can't wait to go back even it it's sometimes a bit disorganized. I guess it is the price to pay for enjoying great food in Shanghai.More
Recently had the opportunity to dine with friends and family at this Establishment on our recent visit to Shanghai. We were more than happy with the experience...... The meal was superb ...... Roast Duck, Leg of Lamb, Prawns, Beef, Rice and Noodle Dishes washed down...with appropriate beverages all at a very reasonable price. We came over for the AFL Football Match and we will return both to Shanghai and this Restaurant.More
We had a great meal and I was eating with two Chinese that have extensive experience.Everything we had was very good. Our Duck was very good...I have been coming to China since 1985 about 5 times per year and at one point we even lived in...China for many years ....so I do not understand the bad reviews here...as we really ate very well.Service was excellent, very friendly attentive and quick.Definitely a returnMore
