First when you enter the restaurant, which is thought to be in the 40s, the butler will welcome you and a large group of waiters will make your evening wonderful. the food has a very Finnish emphasis and is enjoyable, even heavy classic (French cuisin)...such as snails were on the menu. I can only recommend the experience to Finnish tastes.More

Recommended by our hotel concierge as a restaurant that has served authentic Finnish cuisine for many decades with a fabulous reputation amongst local Finns. Wow, the food, wine list and service (with plenty of Finnish humour and smiles from the staff thrown in) was simply...outstanding. The salmon soup (salmon pieces, potato, dill and I’m sure plenty of other delicious ingredients) made the entrée dish mouthwatering. My main dish was traditional Finnish meatballs with mash potato and lingonberry sauce, while my wife had pepper steak, beans and pita to - again, mouthwatering. When we thought the gastronomic delights couldn’t get any better, we finished with French style crepes, ice cream, cream, strawberry sauce and fresh strawberries. We returned to Helsinki a week later before jetting off to Sweden and went to Sea Horse for a second time in 7 days! Make sure you book in advance because Sea Horse is clearly a favourite haunt of local Helsinki Finns. I suspect we were some of the few tourists who know about this hidden treasure in the heart of Helsinki! Kiitos!More

Knowing the place from eighties, we hoped to renew our good experiences, and that's what we did! The list is traditional, we started with a herring plate and a salad, which we shared. My Wienerschnitzel tasted perfect, my spose's Onion steak as well, accompanied with...nice young Pinot Noir. It was our wedding day, hence the cheesecake came on house. Our waiter knew her job, professional, friendly and warm. What else can you expect from a wedding day dinner. Yes, the Sea Horse coffee, Irish style but personalized by other booze, perfect!More

It had been many years since I had last visited this Helsinki institution. I was hoping nothing had changed and indeed, it had not. The food is still honest good food, fresh and executed with care. I cannot recall if it was always this vegetarian...friendly but the beetroot and goat cheese vegetarian main was excellent. The vorschmack (if you eat meat) is a must. The Mannerheim pike perch was also delightful. Desserts were fun, the squeaky cheese is really delicious and the hot caramel with frozen berries a really unique dessert as well. Service was kind and efficient, and we had a few good laughs with the staff. I hope I can come back again soon, and not have to wait years for my next visit.More

Although its charm is that it’s ‘traditional’, it really did feel like something out of the 70s or 80s. My feed was okay, streak was undercooked, am sure there are better traditional Finnish restaurants.

I often have lunch in Seahorse, obviously I've developed some masochist tendencies over the years or maybe I just don't care anymore. The place is past its prime, a dull location, a dull menu, service straight out of a Kaurismäki movie. And do they really...serve pickled beet root with EVERYTHING?More

My Finnish friend recommended for a true taste of Finnish cuisine. The favourite restaurant apparently of General Mannerheim is a visit to a bygone era. It’s almost like sitting back in somewhere in the 50s, very unique. Bookings are definitely recommended, staff are serious but...pleasant and polite. The food is very good. Starters of Snails and my first ever tasting of Vorschmack was a delight. Mains of fried Baltic herring and a well cooked steak for mains both again very good. My one word of caution would be the portions are absolutely enormous. I actually thought at one point my Vorschmack starter was a main and my Baltic herrings was a massive serving. I left very very full but happy and I thought it was very reasonable on price. Definitely check it out when in HelsinkiMore

Visited with my spouse and my two kids, who by the way are extremely picky when it comes to food. Ordered the wiener schnitzel and minute steak for the kids. My spouse had the pepper steak and I had the wiener schnitzel also. We could...hear the meat being pounded in the kitchen. This is positive as that seems all too uncommon these days. The food was of good quality and taste and unpretentious. Honest good food! The kids ate all their food (must have been a first time)! The portions were quite large. Unpretentious is a suitable word for the menu and for the place as a whole. Good honest food and nice service. You won't leave hungry! I liked it!More

Food was quite good. Ordered a very expensive pepper steak (36€) and got something else. Instead of an apology I had to argue with the waitress to get what I actually ordered. Amazing!!! Friend next to me ordered one type of a beer and got...another brand, because the one he ordered was not chilled. Waitress didn't even ask if it is ok to give him something else. Regarding the food the steak and sauce was good. Potatoes very ordinary. Ordered pancakes with strawberry jam for dessert. They were good, but fried on too low heat and a bit slimy. Whip served with them was made from vegetable fat. Unbelievable for a 12€ dessert! I will skip this place in the future.More

Went to this restaurant because my hotel gave me a list of traditional Finnish restaurants and this restaurant was on this list. I was seated promptly and I asked what I should order. My server recommended the fried herring and I also selected the mushrooms...soup as a starter. The mushroom soup was okay but the herring was horrible, it was greasy and tasteless. What I also disliked was my server's poor service. Someone elsr served me the soup. My server did drop off the herring and then disappeared. I had to ask another server for the check. At that point, he did come back to give me the bill. When I told him the herring was tastless, his comment was just, you should use salt. There was no attempt to sympathize about my negative experience. In my three days in Helsinki this is my first negative experience. There are lots of better restaurants and I've eaten at them.More

What a jewel to find on our last evening in Helsinki. We were searching for an authentic Finnish 'locals' restaurant where we could get reindeer filets and other regional specialties and we were not disappointed. The food was wonderful and the service top notch. Highly...recommend this one!More

It was our last night in Finland so we asked the concierge at our hotel where we might find a good Finnish meal within walking distance. He directed us here, only half mile away from Hotel Lilla Roberts, and we are so very glad we...went. The three of us got exactly what we wanted - reindeer steak perfectly cooked with delicious mashed potatoes mixed with onion, and meatballs for me along with mashed potatoes without onions. Beetroot would have been served with the meatballs but I requested lingonberry sauce so I could try it. Lovely meal in the corner of a secluded room. Good Argentine wine to go with it. Very helpful staff. We would eat here again! [Be sure to make a reservation]More

HI, I just looked from website of Seahorse restaurant, and they don´t take reservations by e-mail. You have to call +358 9 628 169 if you want to make a table reservation. Enjoy your trip in Helsinki and in Seahorse! :)
