After 10 days in Costa Rica and 5 different rooms, I can very gladly tell you that Juan and Gumbo Limbo were BY FAR our best lodging decision of the trip. We stayed in one of the two single rooms, so this review is specifically about the rooms and not the villa. However, I poked my head into one of the villas, and those are even nicer than the room! Juan is an incredible host. Check in was a breeze, and check out was simple. His recommendations on everything from surf spots (it was our first time so we needed extra help renting a board and finding an easy place) to restaurants were impeccable. The rooms are so clean, just spotless. The bed is comfortable and the sheets are immaculate. The balcony has THE MOST incredible view of the ocean, and we fell asleep every night with the sliding door open to feel the breeze, the sound of the water gently putting us to sleep. We were pleasantly surprised to find the bed turned for us while we we at the ocean on the 2nd day--that's an amenity I usually only expect at a traditional hotel, but it's just spectacular to come back to a made bed! The infinity pool was the perfect place to unwind after an day of getting beat up by the sea, and the view of the ocean from there is just as incredible as it is from the balcony. The partially outdoor shower is REALLY cool. It keeps the airflow moving in the whole room, and again, it's super duper clean and well appointed. The hangout area/patio/breakfast seating for the room may be one of my favorite parts about this room. There are tables, bar stools, and laid back couches, most of which have overhead coverage to keep you from getting beat up by the sun. It's the best place to have breakfast (delicious, I might add!) or hang out after a day at the beach chatting with the other travelers. I met more interesting people in 3 days at Gumbo Limbo than the rest of our trip combined. So many airbnb places simply don't have a gathering place outside of the room itself, and I really appreciated the casual feel and excellent vibe of the patio. There in the public area with a refrigerator and freezer that can be used to store ice and drinks too. The driveway is a bit intense, as noted. It's dusty and steep, but as long as you know how to drive your rented 4x4, you will be just fine. Parking felt very safe and secure at the top of the hill, which is huge. The beaches feel very safe, especially in comparison to some other beach towns we visited. The towns of Malpais and Santa Teresa are super interesting. It feels a bit like the a surfing town combined with the Wild West, with dusty dirt road filleds with beautiful barefoot surfers. The restaurants in this area seemed a lot more cosmopolitan and international than the other beach towns we visited. We love to eat good food so that was very important to us!! I can't wait to go stay with Juan again. Gumbo Limbo is the BEST.…
