Detailed Reviews
Stayed here from Boxing Day until the 2 nd of January. The location is amazing, right next to the chair lift. Just be aware the slope that leads to the hotel is a red slope so you need to be quite a good skier to ski down to hotel. The breakfast were continental, simple but nice- they could do with some toasters though! The best part of the hotel was the owner, he was always cheerful and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The other hotel staff were also very good . Overall a great hotel for what you pay for.

The hotel is now exclusive to Esprit (winter) and Inghams (summer). the location is excellent, next to the Jolanda chairlift giving direct access to the Monte Rosa circuit. At the end of the day you can ski right back to to the front door.
The hotel itself isn't too much to write home about, the rooms are reasonably spacious and well equipped, there is a small spa area with Turkish bath, sauna and jacuzzi, which were all operating at below adequate temperatures on our visit. The food and drink were excellent.
The service from the staff was superb, and a special mention must go to James the Esprit rep and AJ the child care manager who kept things going during a very difficult week weather-wise (ski area closed for nearly 2 days due to huge dump of snow!). As always, Esprit child care is top-notch, and as the kids had a great time, so did we.
Gressoney really is a hidden gem of a resort, and we will be back.

This was our second time with Esprit after a week in Belle Plagne last year. The Esprit part of the experience really couldn't be faulted. The childcare, which let's face it is the reason we do this, was (again) fantastic. Our 5 yo daughter was in the Sprite Beginners and the team that supervised her was delightful. The whole childcare team, under the super efficient Sarah, was enthusiastic and diligent. Similarly, the hotel staff were great and nothing was too much trouble for Mandy the hotel manager. Adult food was very good, not 'Italian' at all (Esprit work to a standard menu of restaurant-style crowd pleasers) and the wine perfectly drinkable and free flowing, but kids high tea was a bit blah, too reliant on mash and peas.
Now for the things that are not Esprit-related but would have been nice to know when planning:
- The resort is in the central of three valleys with a number of small villages interconnected by ski lifts. The resort is very picturesque and the runs were just how I like them (wide, quiet, not too steep and well groomed). The valley the hotel is in is very affected by wind, which means that there can be unexpected lift closures that trap you in the home valley. The hotel is ski-in/ski-out (to a point, see below)
- The whole resort isn't very well integrated. There is a lot of walking with your skis from the bottom of the run to lifts. Lifts tend to be slow and uncomfortable.
- Most importantly for anyone that is or is skiing with kids or people that are below Intermediate standard, whilst there is a pretty easy red run that will take you back to the hotel, there is nowhere to go with beginner skiers that doesn't require a bus ride and other sorts of faff to get to. My husband and I were keen to take out daughter out some afternoons after her lessons and lunch, but it was always painful. It meant that we sometimes took her straight from the end of her ski lesson (because she was already at the beginner area - either at Staffal carpet or the triple chair up from Gabiet gondola) so she ended up missing the lunch and snow club we'd paid for and our ski time was curtailed. It also meant we had her for the whole afternoon rather than just being able to pop out with her for a couple of runs and able to pop back in when she got tired and then continuing to ski on our own. It was very frustrating and would stop us returning to this otherwise lovely resort and Esprit property until we could get our daughter down the red home run.
(As a side note, we found the best place for beginners was Gressoney St-John rather than bothering going up to Staffal. GSJ had a nice long drag lift as well as a rope tow and an enormous chair with a fabulous 3.5 km blue that circled around the mountain and which our 5 yo proudly snow plowed down by Thursday.)
Finally, the hotel is an old school ski hotel that could be made much better by one or two cheap fixes (new shower heads/soft close doors to floors/ upgrading the wifi). But it was warm, comfortable enough and a lovely size so you got to know most families by sight by the end of your stay (not that you could pick them with their ski gear on!) A nice bunch of people with numerous families on their second or third return trip, which speaks volumes. The hotel is in a very quiet village - one shop and no pharmacy and limited options for the Wednesday eat-out night (although we had a very good steak meal at Walserschild). The ski hire super convenient, almost across the street.
So there you go. So much of our holiday was excellent and above what we expected, but the resort layout means we'll have to leave it a year or two before we come again.

Gressoney was lovely and unspoiled but for us seniors the walking was hard
We went on this holiday with Ingham's having booked in November. Unlike Dennis we did not book a balcony as going at this time of the year we have previously found that the weather is unreliable (as it was last week). However the hotel did have a very nice veranda.
We were pleasantly surprised to be met at Gatwick check in by Steve who kindly escorted us through the fast track check in
We had a lovely holiday in The Hotel Valverde from 5th to 12th July and I can endorse all of the previous comments about the hotel made by Dennis and Alan.
I would add that one of the best things about the holiday was the friendliness of all of the other guests staying at The Valverde. This was exceptional.
SO WHAT DID WE DO
We arrived Saturday evening.
Sunday we went for a walk with Ricky-Lee, the Ingham's rep. along the river and, through meadows of wonderful wild flowers to Gressoney-St-Jean.
Monday we took the hotel shuttle to Steffal and from there took the Gondola to Gabiet. We had intended to walk round the lake and then down to the hotel but we found that because of rock falls it was too dangerous for us to proceed so we retraced our steps and took the Gondola down and from Steffal walked back to the hotel in a thunder storm
On track 9A. This took us 1hr 20 mins.
On Tuesday it rained all day. We took the bus to Tscemenoal and then proceeded along a track named 'The Queen's Walk (no 15). to Castle Savoia. This was a good choice as we were partially sheltered by trees. We had a good English-speaking guide and the visit was most interesting. We walked back along the same track but vied off to visit the small and pretty Lac Gover in Gressoney-St-Jean then took the bus back to Gressoney-La-Trinite.
On Wednesday, we took the bus to Port-St-Martin, which is at the bottom of the valley and from there took the train from platform 2, buying our tickets from the ticket collector on the train going to Aosta. Aosta is a very good and interesting city with lots of lovely buildings and churches to see and was not at all crowded and we enjoyed our visit immensely. Returning by the train my husband bought our tickets from the office on the station. The ticket collector boarded the train prior to its start and said that 'our tickets must be validated by the machine on the platform'. He kindly showed my husband to the machine and explained that failure to do this would have resulted in a fine.
On Thursday we again took the hotel taxi to Steffal and gondola to Gabiet intending to walk to The Blue Lake We managed to walk on a steep path to The Green Lake but then lost the markers and so returned. We were later told that these were covered by snow and like us quite a few people from the hotel returned at this point. We again walked back to Gressoney through the glorious flower meadows.
ON Friday we again took the hotel taxi to Steffal then the Gondola to St Anna. We walked to the lovely chapel to take photo's then up to the Refugio Stiffen for beer and coffee and to eat our packed lunch with wonderful views of the Glacier and The Monte Rosa covered by snow. We walked back down by the service road and bussed back.
We left on Saturday. The Chair- lift next to the hotel opened in the morning which we found annoying as this would have been great to use the previous week.
As you see there was plenty to do, with many exciting walks and climbs for younger walkers. The trip to Turin was cancelled due to insufficient numbers

We have just returned from a two week stay at the Valverde. During this summer it is being operated as a chalet hotel by Inghams. This was our first stay in a chalet hotel but will not be our last.
We were fortunate in that we booked early and managed to get one of the few rooms (109) with both a bath and a balcony. The room was light and airy and comfortable. The area outside the hotel is quiet in the evening so we didn't get any disturbance from noise.
The hotel bar/lounge and dining room are on the ground floor. The lounge has a seating area with tables (packs of cards on them!) and a seating area with comfy chairs and sofas. Tea and coffee is always available for you to make yourself and between 4pm and 5pm cakes are served.
At 7.15pm an aperitif and canapés are served in the lounge before going into the restaurant for dinner at 7.45pm. We found the lounge a pleasant, relaxing area where we could chat with our fellow guests.
The meals were very good, three courses with choices taken in the morning. The food is well presented and tasty. Wednesday night is staff day off so you have to go out to a local restaurant to eat. Friday night is barbeque night. There is a plentiful amount of wine served with a choice of red, white or rose. The dining room can get noisy with everyone chatting away, the quietest table is one in the far corner. Breakfast is also served in the restaurant, starting at 7.30 am and there is usually a hot choice on offer to supplement, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts, rolls, ham and cheese etc.
The hotel is run by Michela and Rachel and they have made it an informal and friendly place to stay. The girls that wait on and do the housework are very helpful and friendly.
The Gressoney valley is an excellent walking area for hard walks as there are some steep paths. The village is very quite and it was nice to return from our walks to this warm and friendly hotel.
After our experience at the Valverde we would recommend a stay here.

We went to Hotel Valverde at the beginning of February 2014 with our 11 year old son. We had a smooth transfer from Turin and arrived in the village by 1pm which gave us plenty of time to get delicious pizza just a few metres away from the hotel before sorting out our skis etc so we were ready for the first lift the following day. The hotel is exceptionally well located, approx 10 metres from the main chair up to the top of the mountain, and you ski back literally to the bottom of the hotel steps to the front door. We booked ski hire through Esprit, the hire shop was directly opposite the hotel.
The hotel was clean and efficiently run. The food was far beyond our expectation and seemed much better than the chalets we had stayed with on other ski Esprit holidays.
We joined the Esprit rep for ski guiding for the first three days which was a great way to get to know the area and a group of other geusts staying at the hotel. MONTEROSA ski area incorporating Gressoney, Alagna and Champaluc was fab. It was so quiet. Lifts were efficient and the runs long and empty. On several occasions we would ski for 2-3 km before seeing another skier. The area is popular with off-pisters which is great for us on-pisters as we get to keep the beautiful pistes to ourselves. Gressoney itself has no blue runs but, on the whole, the runs are wide so even beginners coped well.
Having skied mainly in France, we were shocked to find a cappuchino cost just 1.5 euro even up the mountain and a main meal approx 10-12 euro.
Overall, all the Italiens in the restaurants, shops etc were incredibly friendly and welcoming, lacking the superiority that the French subjected us to iin our previous experience in the Three Valleys and Paradiski.

Pros:
- good size hotel room.
- right next to a chairlift.
- beautiful valley to visit and with the right snow conditions the skiing is fantastic.
- hotel facilities, lounge room, spa etc very good.
- child listening service was excellent, all the staff that did this were great and very friendly and professional.
Cons:
- dreadful food. I'm not sure how you can even manage to ruin breakfast - leather that was once bacon, burnt croissants etc! Literally everyone was complaining and several people ate out on a few evenings as the food was so bad! The cakes were also terrible, it was impressive to be quite so bad at every mealtime!
- bedrooms could have been a bit cleaner, especially where you have small children crawling around on the floor.
- the nursery care was not great. We heard of babies not receiving their milk during the day and routines which had been written down were not followed. Medicine instructions written on the back of hands and then not followed.
- generally a number of the staff were not overly friendly and seemed to be lacking in customer service training. This was not true of all though and Claudia, Sam and Ed in particular were great.
We've never travelled with Espirit before and based on this holiday I'm not sure I would again, it was pretty average.

Having just returned from an excellent walking holiday in the Gressoney valley, I have to write and recommend this hotel and it's staff. Reassured by Hotel Manager, Michaela, at our welcome meeting that she wanted to make our holiday the best we could hope for, she and her friendly team didn't disappoint. Despite walking for many hours each day, the excellent food and service meant that I actually put on weight during the week! The wine just kept flowing, the meals were of a high standard and the company of our fellow guests was pleasurable.
As for the location, it was picture perfect and everything you could imagine in Alpine scenery. The views can only be described as breathtaking. With the wild flowers, trees and snow-capped peaks it is a wonder why anyone would wait until it is covered with snow to visit.
Some of the walks are a little challenging and can occasionally take you close to the edge of a steep drop! A strong nerve is required to get the rewarding views. Having said that, my husband and I, who had never done a walking holiday before, managed perfectly well. The guide books provide good descriptions of each walk, which are also graded 'T' (easy) 'E' ( moderate) and EE (difficult).
All the walks we undertook had something to praise, although I would advise that 10 is a steep and relentless climb all the way and not for the faint- hearted. The green lake is not worth the walk, but if you persevere the blue lake a little further on is much better. The Walser walk was really lovely and one I would recommend.
Thanks to the Inghams staff and our fellow guests for making our holiday a wonderful experience

This was our fourth esprit holiday and definitely the best so far. All of our previous holidays with esprit have been excellent, but this one just seems to have perfected everything and has just that bit extra service all round. The hotel is in a perfect position, rooms are a good size and well equipped, the bar area is just the right size and with a corner with books and games for the children to play in. The dining room is also well laid out and food all week was excellent, I can't think of any meals that we didn't enjoy. There was also a good selection of childrens meals too, and on the chalet staffs night off, the children can still be looked after by the staff, taking them on a pizza night and treasure hunt around the resort. All of the snowrangers are excellent and the children really took to them (my son is still missing Mikki (mouse)!)
The ski school is fantastic, my son is in beginners (with Diego as their instructor) and was doing red runs by the end of the week. He thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to ski again. Also lessons start at 10am, so no big bustling rush in the morning. Children sign into snowclub, play a few games and then the snowrangers help to get their ski kit on.
The resort itself is fantastic, long well linked runs with some of the emptiest runs i've ever seen - great for building confidence. Don't be put off by the piste map showing mainly red runs, these are the nicest red runs i've ever been on (i'm sure some would be blue in france). Even the blacks aren't bad, more like reds really. There are lots of mountain restaurants too for anyone that likes regular stops, and all are very reasonably priced. Gressoney la trinite village is quiet, not a place for nightlife but you don't need to leave the hotel on 6 nights anyway. On the chefs night off we booked in at Castore restaurant - lovely place with a good selection of wines and beers and excellent food - i would highly recommend it!
Overall brilliant holiday and can't wait to go back next year.

Overall brilliant holiday and can't wait to go back next year.

the hotel is staffed by Ingham's own staff and run as a chalet hotel this summer season. Good value for money. Basic but clean en suite rooms, free packed lunch hot option for breakfast , choice of 3 main courses for dinner, inclusive aperitifs and wine 6 nights a week. Only bookable via Inghams. Lifts in the valley get you from hotel height 1832m up tp 2,200 m and above in minutes. Weather this season very mixed but a good location beneath the Monte Rosa massif.
