It is my honor and priviledge to write this review of my stay at Hotel Don Tavo. Hotel accommodations in the alpine area of northwestern Panama is quite expensive. I know that, because I have traveled there almost annually since 2009. It is not uncommon to spend upwards of $100.00 per night, even for rather cramped and small rooms. If you are lucky to find a realtor to arrange for your stay, you will most likely get a small discount for your room, and the realtor likely might received a "kick back" for referring you. Having said all of that, now I can review Hotel Don Tavo. During my previous visits to Volcan I noticed this rather small (16 room) Hotel right on the Highway in downtown Volcan. I rented a car for a week at the airport in David, drove to Volcan. I was booked in another Hotel, and that was arranged by one of the local realtors... I got a small discount and paid ONLY about $60.00 a night for the week. After my first arrival, I asked the realtor about Hotel Don Tavo... He told me he would even put his mother-in-law in that Hotel. I have to explain this to give you an idea of probably "why" Hotel Don Tavo is usually not mentioned or recommended by the local realtors in Volcan. It is a small hotel in comparrison to others in the vacinity, the the room sizes are about equivalent with the much higher priced competition. My 7-day stay at Hotel Don Tavo was pleasant, the staff is superbly friendly, the rooms are immaculately cleaned every day. You can't beat the location either. It is right down town along the highway. If you're flying to David, I recommend booking a car at the airport in advance and drive to Volcan yourself. The ride is pleasant, and the highway is a well mained paved highway. Before you know it, you'll arrive in Volcan, approximately 4,500 feet high, where the day time air temperative averages 72 degrees and, the night time temperature, around 52 degrees F. As you come into Volcan, you'll notice Hotel Dan Tavo on the left of the main highway. Here are some of the obvious pluses for staying at the Hotel: 1. In-house restaurant is open from early in the morning to mid-evening every day. The price for a good breakfast runs under $5.00. Ms. Mona, the owner of this restaurant is an experienced chef that used to manage a much larger restaurant in another hotel. Her staff is friendly and courteous. 2. Room size, the price ran me about 1/2 the price found anywhere else in Volcan, about $32.00 a night! 3. Didn't bring your own laptop or tablet with you? Not a problem. The Hotel has its own in-house internet cafe! If you do bring your own laptop or tablet, wi-fi is free and the connection is fabulous in the lobby and public areas. Although the Hotel does NOT advertise wi-fi in the rooms, I brought my own hi-gain 300 mps USB wi-fi antenna. I had a great signal in my room located on the second floor using this antenna, even good enough to make phone calls using both Magicjack and SKYpe! Is this special, or what! Another point here is that although wi-fi is available in other hotels in Volcan, you usually have to pay a daily cost for this service. My experience has been that the wi-fi connections in the rooms at other higher-priced hotels (even after paying for the service) is not any better than the free wi-fi at Hotel Don Tavo! 4. The Hotel is quiet and the grounds and back courtyard area are immaculate and well groomed. There is a giant mural stretching the entire length of one entire wall. There are chairs and tables located in this courtyard... it's a great place to chill out after spending long days exploring the alpine country of northwest Panama! Let me be serious. I understand that Hotel Don Tavo probably doesn't rate in the 5-Star rating category; but neither are most of the other Hotels in Volcan. I give Don Tavo my highest overall rating, Excellent, simply because it is the greatest overall value for the price of anything I have experienced, to date, in Volcan. True, no saunas, hot tubs or swimming pool. But for price, cleanliness, beauty and comfort, and service this Hotel will obviously meet or exceed your requirements for accommodation in Volcan. I really enjoyed my week at Hotel Don Tavo in Volcan. I highly recommend this establishment for anyone looking for quality and service at an honest price. If you rent a car in David and drive to Volcan yourself (highly recommended!), please note that parking is free at the Hotel and it is safe and secure. The Hotel is centrally located, and a great jumping off spot for driving around in the beautiful alpine countryside of Chiriqui Province in Panama! I hope this review is helpful for you. The ONLY drawback for me personally is that all rooms are non-smoking. So, if you smoke, you'll have to do that in the courtyard out back, or the parking lot outside.…
